I have a different take on this.
Freedom is a promise
You often don't know how much freedom you really have until you test the boundaries.
I find it difficult to define the borders between freedom and power.
History is replete with kings that thought they had all the freedom (power) in the world, until they tested it a bit too far.
Back when there was free land to settle, man could pretend he were independent
Very accurate to say pretend. The norwegian colony encountered such difficulty that their "freedom" was a constant battle between life and death against nature. The more succesful american settlement operations were almost all european state funded and expected economic results, some more than others. A number of these were taken over by other states from time to time (bye bye swedish america, bye bye dutch nieuw amsterdam).
And for all their freedom, they depended very much on each other for survival and protection. And if you weren't the right type of christian that could give some serious problems with your community.
But the new world... we're lacking a good wheelwright. Hmmm, let's print some nice flyers to convince skilled europeans to make the journey. Let's invite them with a promise of freedom and a land of riches.
What is promised to migrant workers? Same thing. To women being tricked into trafficked sex work? Freedom freedom freedom. Freedom and gold. Imagine what you could do if you worked with us for 2 years. imagine what your life could be like as a moviestar. Just suck this guy's cock. Imagine the freedom you'll have, taking whatever project you want once you're famous.
Freedom is some kind of ephemeral concept. We are very vulnerable to feeling trapped. Trapped in our job, trapped in our city, trapped in our covid quarantine, trapped in our marriage, trapped trapped trapped. We're so vulnerable to the idea of someone encroaching on our freedoms. I'm not saying there's something wrong with that, but it is something we're very vigilant and sensitive off.
How do you prop people into fighting? We'll those bastards are threatening our freedoms. Soviets want to bury us all. Americans want to force their capitalist exploitation system on us. Watch out for the muslim terrorists (never mind that we're funding them). Watch out for covid (never mind that we keep you in a constant state of fear about it).
The freedom you have and the freedom you think you have are not the same and most freedoms go untested. Most people believe they still have freedom of speech and freedom of press in the west, but these are already dead. Many just haven't noticed yet. They did not yet encounter a truth worth censoring, that they tried to broadcast.
Freedom is a promise. And it is often broken.
