Freemasonry - Heresy With Weird Hats

If it's anything like East Asian fraternal secret societies, there's no inherently evil agenda behind them. But when the secret society's channels of communication, networking, and infrastructure is hijacked or coopted by some other political cause or movement, then it can be very troublesome and subversive.

That happened many times in China, Indochina, the Chinese diaspora in Southeast Asia, I think maybe also a little bit in Japan and Korea at varying times. And maybe during American Revolution too, with the Freemasons.

I am a master mason and I can assure you the most interesting thing we do is plan charitable pancake breakfasts.

Edit: the decline of the masons is because they don't recruit due to their nature, and fraternal organizations have seen a general decline anyway. Just look at actual college fraternities, which have seen a steep decline in membership in the last 20 years.
I've thought about joining them, or something like the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

I think they probably answer a need in society that isn't being addressed and flatter myself that I'd be a net positive for revival

At the end of the day it's a social club. If you have a desire to hang out with mostly old dudes a few times a month then go for it.

In England and the Anglosphere, the Masons seem to be mostly harmless, except for instance in the American Revolutionary War as @millais mentioned; however, on the Continent, their versions of the Masons were very political and anti-clerical, which is/was the main source of the Church's problem with them.

My boyfriend's late grandfather was apparently a freemason, and even had the symbol on his casket. Bf inherited some esoteric looking pins from him. I've generally been in the mind that it's a dudes social club like other people have said, with a "secret society" flavor to make it more fun. His grandpa must have really been invested in it.

There's a lodge in the town we live in now. Apparently I can't join cause I'm a lady according to you guys. Oh well, I'm probably not missing much.

Edit: According to wikipedia in the past couple years the united grand lodge in England declared that men who trans out after initiation are still full members, and transmen can become members too. Real woman there are still out of luck I guess. Still wouldn't join 'em anyway.
