I am a master mason and I can assure you the most interesting thing we do is plan charitable pancake breakfasts.
Edit: the decline of the masons is because they don't recruit due to their nature, and fraternal organizations have seen a general decline anyway. Just look at actual college fraternities, which have seen a steep decline in membership in the last 20 years.
At the end of the day it's a social club. If you have a desire to hang out with mostly old dudes a few times a month then go for it.I've thought about joining them, or something like the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
I think they probably answer a need in society that isn't being addressed and flatter myself that I'd be a net positive for revival
