Anyone else here ever played it any? It's a wonderful little indie roguelike based around commanding a small starship on a critical mission.

I actually finished it not long ago, very much like Platinum's Infinite Space on the DS.

I very much like this game but I still haven't beaten it. It's so damn hard.

Also play/love this game, but I ragequit because the final boss is insanely difficult. Just love the concept of roguelike meets spacecraft sim/fighter.

Necro-ing in the hope that someone here gives a shit about this game.

I finally got my second victory after 79 tries, this time with Kestral B. I was trying to unlock Kestral C, which happens when you reach the last sector with Kestral B and with advanced edition content activated. I got there, beat the flagship and there was much rejoicing...until I noticed I didn't get Kestral C. It then occurred to me why I couldn't find any flak weapons neither: I had advanced edition content disabled. All that for nothing. After 79 god damn tries and the false elation of thinking I finally did it. This game is a form of masochism. Every failed run comes from the tiniest oversights and lapses in judgement after over an hour of play.

And yet I can't stop playing. I'm gonna try Engi Cruiser A again.

EDIT: Got the ship names wrong

FTL is a game that I got because of Rich Evans. It's the best modern example of a rogue-lite game and I find it to its detriment. Certain builds like cloaking is necessary for the final boss, but if you don't get it, well, you can't dodge the final boss's attacks then. Since every event is random, it's hard to scale difficulty in that game, so they have to use brute force methods like weaker enemy stats and more scrap from victory. Never beat it on normal and don't care to try. I don't hate it like Enter the Gungeon, but to say I like it is a stronger term than I'd use.

Alternate games that are like FTL are Infinite Space III and Distant Star: Revenant. Infinite Space III is a bit easier than FTL because of retreat spamming and Distant Star has an RTS element to its combat. Games you might consider during the Steam sale.

If you're victory and cheevo/unlock farming, almost nothing beats the Kestrel B in terms of reliability.
My winning run with it was insane, I found weapon preigniter, burst laser 2 and ion blast 1 all before sector 3, then bought ion blast 2 and a pike beam. There was little challenge thereafter.

like the other guy said, its so random and the game is so fucking easy until the boss that forces you into mostly the same strategies every time, plus having to fight it 3 different times is fucking obnoxious. but seriously, you can't win through boarding or drones or fire or draining the ship of oxygen and the power surges demand you beat it quickly every time so a lot of the "races" stereotypical strategies and ship designs are all but fucking useless. it is extremely addictive though, but i feel thats mainly because one you get the hang of it everything until the final boss is interesting and the fights and events short enough for you to get sucked in easily.

More bosses would be great DLC if they ever came back to it. I'm eager to try things like the multiverse mod but maybe I should get competent at AE first.

Teleporter against flagship is underrated, a single mantis pretty much ensures you can knock out the flagships isolated weapon rooms easily.

the drones in phase 2 and the thing it does in phase 3 will usually fuck you more than their weapons, but it really does become a lot easier once you take out their missiles. that means you only have to worry about the lasers breaking through the shields and if they don't you're fine for phase one and can kill off as many people as needed and repair shit on your own ship before knocking out phase two.

Yea I love the game, the combat and the lore/universe, but the final boss ruins it for me. It's such a bullshit tough fight that requires a specific strategy and a good run.

No skill, or good use of game mechanics will save you from this one.

Anyway it's at 75% on Steam and you can get it for $2.5

I had an insane run with a drone recovery arm and drone scrambler + 3 drones. But if you have shit RNG you are fucked.

Him being complete bullshit is such a good part of the game for me, as you have to try your best to prepare or you are fucked. Still with how long runs can get it's fair criticism.

It's the journey to the fagship that's the most fun, seeing what RNGesus implores you to use this time. I have the most fun trying to adapt and run with whatever oddball weapons I find early in the run.

Pretty much, my definition of a bad roguelike is doing everything right and still losing because of a bad seed. In general the design of the final boss is really bad because you need to be a precog to know what would be affective against it. Else you come to the usual case where it outshields your shots and you lost before even starting.

I have to say that the rock ship and trying to do a run primarily off of missiles is the most frustrating thing ever.
At least with the engie ship I learned to appreciate drones and what they could do, I just get frustrated trying to complete a run with those slow-ass retards and their shitty weapons.

I've played it but I'm not very good at it. It's one of those game I want to be good at and just don't have the time to devote to a rogue like

Rock A is universally considered bad due to their heavy reliance on missiles. Possibly the only ship worse is Engi B. (Whoever designed this is an absolute sadist).
