The funniest part about the old usenet and BBS boards is that some back and forth rivalries could be drawn out for years. And it was all archived for the entire (online) world to see.

pure fucking chaos because usenet, for its entire existence, has had hardly any moderation at all. that's not to say it isn't possible, there were "moderated" groups but they were far less active than non-moderated ones. as you can imagine this lead to the protocol being used by a variety of bad actors, the worst being CSAM distributors. article by researcher grugq: http://grugq.github.io/blog/2013/12/01/yardbirds-effective-usenet-tradecraft/
 
gonna doublepost i want to tell people how to find good threads, it's pretty easy. first off newsgrouper is the best usenet archive in terms of privacy and basic functionality although it's not as comprehensive as google groups. AFAIK groups is the only resource where you can actually search for specific keywords, in practice it's very difficult to index hundreds of millions or even billions of posts considering a. usenet is flooded to the brim with spam b. these posts were distributed across a wide range of hierarchies. sorting and indexing such a massive distributed system is something up to this point only google (or dejanews which they bought) has been able to accomplish. times have changed and perhaps it's more feasible for a smaller entity now but i have no idea.

to find flame wars (pretty much any hierarchy that has ever been popular is a good choice):

1. go on newsgrouper and under "Find groups to read" input a hierarchy like alt.flame.niggers, or select "Guide to the most active groups"

2. look for threads that have at least 10 replies OR start going back in time, using alt.flame.niggers as an example modify the URL with a large pagecount like https://newsgrouper.org/alt.flame.niggers/older/800000, this puts you back in 2003 for instance. it's probably a better idea to look at older posts considering usenet was much more active back in the day.

that's pretty much it.
