A small part of me says familiarity with the Arabian conditions will give Iran an advantage not a lot of people have thought about. Whether that’s enough to close the quality gap on the rest of the group is another question. The beauty of international football is that the whole can be far greater than the sum of its parts though.

My gut feeling is Argentina. I know that’s the safe and popular choice but I feel like you can’t just wing it to a World Cup win. ARG has quality, experience and is currently playing well, and it’s a perfect combo.

it takes the right player characters too, and france hasnt produced those in 2 decades.
Honestly, losing Giroud has really fucked with France. Benzema is a way better striker but he doesn't play the style that helps with the rest of the French talent

not losing to 3 rivals is not bad, and they steamrolled italy this week.
Italy are not a good benchmark right now. Argentina steamrolled Italy too

the last euros were a shitshow for most teams so that isnt a good indicator.
Yeah but it was the last real tournament for most teams and it wasn't that long ago. Better than the nations league or international friendlies imo

they have the quality to win the cup pretty much everytime, but they lack the killer instinct to win it for some reason.
Yeah its really weird. Especially considering the dutch history of free flowing, attacking football.

they are much weaker than the top teams on pretty much every position, dont have a deep bench and arent a good team.
No arguments here

it all comes down to tactic for them. they have the players to do it if everything goes right, unlike other non contenders.
greece shouldnt have pulled it off in 2004 either, but they did. i only see this quality in smaller european non contenders because their playerbase comes from european top leagues and alot of them are important players for their team.
The european darkhorses are usually obvious picks coming into world cups. And greece pulled off their magic at a Euro tournament, not a world cup. I see any potential darkhorse coming from outside of europe

the us is always to excpensive in the betting market and all of the teams lack quality. the Us has a world class striker, but the rest of the team is just to weak.
The US isn't even the best team coming from concacaf. Canada > Mexico > US > Costa Rica imo. Senegal have the best group and team to do anything right now along with maybe Canada

Their first game is against England so they might be able to catch some momentum with a win there

yeah thats fair.

greece only had a good coach, the rest of the team was meh at best but they still won.

yeah but one good striker can be the difference in a cup game.

they are one of the better teams.
They were one of the better teams. After the Euro's and Chiesa's injury, they have just been on a downhill slide

greece only had a good coach, the rest of the team was meh at best but they still won.
Unless things all magically align, I dont see Denmark, Poland, Serbia, Switzerland, or Wales doing anything this tournament

Thats why I say Senegal and Canada have the best shot. Mane and Mendy can do something there and Canada have Davies (assuming he is healthy) and Jonathan David from Lille. Those are some pretty deadly combos

Mexico played like dog shit throughout the CONCACAF qualifiers. Raul Jimenez hasn’t been the same since his head injury, their strikers have been awful, Carlos Vela refuses to play for El Tri, Tata Martino might not like Javier Hernandez and hasn’t called him up, and Martino’s tactics have been questionable at best. Hector Herrera is showing his age. Plus Guillermo Ochoa is an overrated GK who should never have played for El Tri again after Chile embarrassed Mexico at the Copa America. But Televisa and the Club America fans will keep sucking Ochoa’s dick and will keep sucking it even if Mexico does get destroyed by Messi and Lewandowski. There’s a non/zero chance Mexico does not make it out of their group.

Remember the nearly complete fucked up season Hertha BSC Berlin had?
Like getting huge investor money but being close to getting relegated to 2nd Bundesliga while their arch rival Union Berlin ranked 5th? And losing both derby matches against Union Berlin last season? And losing to Union Berlin in the DFB Cup and thus getting kicked out of our national cup?

Take a guess which team* Hertha BSC Berlin will face on matchday 1 hahahaha

*It's Union Berlin.

Is that common? Here it's an unwritten rule that the first and last games of the season aren't derbies or other 'rival' fixtures.

Very uncommon. It got everyone with a lot of surprise.

We don't really have that much derbies -or real derbies- here and most rivalries have either cool downed bc the clubs play at different divisions and haven't really met that often or the rivalries are constructed by media to create more important games for more attention (but most people don't really care for these rivalries).
At the moment the only real derby we have in Bundesliga is the Berlin derby.

Speaking of rivalries we now will see again Schalke 04 versus Borussia Dortmund. That game will happen on matchday 7 which is a more usuall setting for these kind of games.

In 2nd Bundesliga there is the derby/rivalry between Greuther Fürth and 1. FC Nuremberg (both cities are close neighbours). It will happen on matchday 3 wich is also very early and also very uncommon.

My friend, @Yuuichirou Kumada , Neymar leaving the national team? What seems to be the general feeling down there in Brazil?

From an outsider perspective it seems his time as the star of the nation has been a waste. Before Neymar there was almost this mythical aura surrounding the Brazil nt, but Neymar seems to have been unable to carry the torch. Whether that's more to do with the nt in general being sub-par compared to past teams idk, there's probably validity in that, but there's no question who the man spearheading the charge was supposed to be.

If he does retire from the nt, what's his legacy?

For the time being, we haven't heard anything about him retiring from the NT, as he's still playing solidly. However, we don't speak much of it, but it is a consensus among us Brazilian fans that this is pretty much his last shot at World Cup glory. He could go at it again in 2026, but by that time he'll be 34 and we like our forwards young and supple. Vinícius Jr. seems to have this covered already, so not many will lament when he does hang it.

Matter of fact, all phases of our NT had their symbolic players: In the 60s we had Pelé and Garrincha, in the 70s we had Rivelino, in the 80s we had Zico and Sócrates, in the 90s we had Romário and Bebeto, in the 2000s we had the Ronaldos and Kaká, and in the new 10s we can say we had Neymar, for better or for worse. And perhaps Neymar's time is about to go down as something of a dark age, where players cared more about appearances than performance, and this deeply affected not only the way they played but the way they thought. I'll never forget the penalty shootout against Chile in the 2014 World Cup. The entire team was crying and cowering in fear. That sight alone put a severe dent in the general image of the team to the people's eyes, and 7x1 solidified it.

Neymar as a subject is very controversial to this day, a love him or hate him matter. You either admire his skills and his lifestyle, or you hate the fact he puts Italy to shame when it comes to diving and flopping around, and has no qualms in showing off his wealth and love conquests. He was relatively off the hook for the 2014 fiasco since he wasn't in the starting team for that one match against Germany, but it was clear the NT at the time depended way too much on him to carry on - If you see some highlights of that particular World Cup, you'll see the team suffered greatly whenever he got blocked.

You also have to see that his entire career was marred in controversy and hype. He was a total beast when he was a wee teenager in Santos (people were already demanding him be called as soon as the 2010 World Cup), and his time in Barcelona solidified both his best and worst traits. At the same time, he was swimming in mad pussy, partying fucking hard whenever he had the chance, and even teetered on becoming something of a lolcow - He sired a son with a one-night stand before he was 20, got into a one-again-off-again relationship with a popular soapie actress before breaking it off completely due to ideological differences (rumor has it he's a total righty and Bolsonaro fan like his dad, but he never let it show for fear of backlash), some psycho bitch tried to cancel him over supposed sexual abuse that was later proved to be complete made-up bupkis, supposedly spit-roasted up-and-coming popstar Anitta along with a former surf World Champion, so on and so forth. It seemed Neymar appeared more in the tabloids than in the sports pages, and footy fans down here didn't like it one bit. Thankfully he learned to balance his professional life with his personal one and never goes overboard, but the image still stood, and to this day we call him stuff like Neymedia, Neyflop, Neyfuck, Nerman, etc.

His legacy will be the same as Zico, Sócrates, Robinho and the like: A top-tier player who had the bad luck of not earning the World Cup, but who also accomplished quite a lot for his clubs (remember, he won a Libertadores for Santos in 2011 and a Champions League for Barcelona in 2015) and in the NT (Confederations Cup 2013, Olympic Gold in 2016 and Copa América 2019). He'll be among the greats, for sure, but not exactly a legend.

If he does retire from the nt, what's his legacy?
leading his team into getting assraped by germany at home?

we also have Bielefeld against paderborn, the 2 hamburg teams and Hannover vs Braunschweig but those matches are later in the year.

Women's Euros begin soon. Anyone here have any insight on who to watch out for?

Haven't watched a whole lot of England lately but from what I've seen they haven't gone anywhere since the WWC. Expect them to go out in the semis. Probably Netherlands or Germany, with maybe Spain as dark horses.

Also wondering what the 'controversy' of the tournament will be, meaning what sociopolitical issue will be crowbarred into it, because heaven forbid childless Guardian journalists not hijack something to peddle their grievances and just let a women's football event be about the football.

My guess: not enough fan interest in the tournament.

Sweden are the highest rankes, Holland won it last time but their coach jumped ship, France always have talent on the womens side since Lyon is the best club side, and Spain are really good

If you want to read more these british fucks wrote about it

I straight up stopped checking the BBC football website ever since they started clickbait headlines by not putting the word "WOMEN'S" before the team name so we're expected to believe that an England national team member is going to Barcelona or France is playing Italy tonight or something like that.

When will these media types realise that nobody gives the slightest fuck about womens football? The ONLY way I'd start caring about it is if it started a tranny infestation and caused a seething meltdown.

Meh, I care enough to watch some games on mute. And then switch the channel during half time. Footy is footy but the way they try marketing it is just terrible

Funny that, there will also be a Women's Copa América this year. I think it will be in July in Colombia. Despite the best efforts of a local channel to make it seem just as important as the men's competition, nobody gives half a shit about it. Even the makeshift Copa América we had last year generated more interest, even if it was at first over the fact it was held during the height of the coof's second wave.

I do remember some people tried to fill some bars at posh places in my city during Brazil's matches in the last Women's World Cup. It was still quiet as hell whenever they scored goals. Compare that to the men's World Cup period, when our NT plays and scores, you can hear the cheering and hollering from at least five different neighbourhoods, no matter where you are. And not even counting the fireworks they release. You just won't get that for the Women's NT.

everyone will shut up and talk how great it was. you dont wanna piss off the money guys...

I am not willing to make any kind of prediction who is the top contender to win the world cup this year.

With the last 3 tournaments, i always had kind of an idea with Spain, Germany and France being all in atleast my top 3 picks. but with the World Cup being played in the winter and barely any team having a proper time to prepare (last Bundesliga matches before the break are a week before the Tournament starts) this could be anybodies tournament,

I could imagine though that France will shit the bed and will keep the champions curse alive, after dissapointing in their last few matches.
