Gabriel Knight - Gay werewolves, religious/historical thrillers and a terrible New Orleans accent

Anyone remember these games? Sins of the Father and The Beast Within are some of the best adventure games of all time, but I even like the third one. It honestly gets way too much hate. I really liked the historical and religious nature of the series, and the lore was full of potential. It never got too pretentious or overbearing. I hope that we get a fourth game some day, with how big game budgets are nowadays adventure games probably aren't too expensive to make.

Grace was one of my biggest crushes as a kid, too.

Alright, I'm a big adventure game fan, I'll bite;

Does the game have failure states? If yes, are they being stuck, dying or both?
Would you recommend playing the first game with the original or the remastered version? I happen to own both, haven't played either yet.
Any major issues that I should be aware of? (for example, some games can have game-breaking bugs that should be fixed with community patching)

Only deaths. There's like one failure state if you enter the final area without doing something first. You'll know when it's coming so save beforehand.

First game has Tim Curry as the lead character with a terrible Creole accent. I think they recast him for the Remastered. So...Original.

First game has one sequence where you have to sneak behind a police desk quickly. I think digital releases of the original and remastered fix this (Last time I played a release, I dont' remember having issues), but as a kid with a fast PC I had to download a freaking CPU killer app to get past this section as the timer was keyed to CPU speed for some stupid fucking reason, and since I had a computer newer than 1995 it meant you had 0.00001 seconds to complete it.

You can definitely die in them, the first one has a particularly great death scene later on. I recall that you can get stuck at certain points in the sequel due to glitches, but I might be remembering wrong.

Depends. The original version has some huge names, like Tim Curry as Gabriel (and he reprises that role in the third one), Michael Dorn and Mark Hamill. It's definitely cheesy and dated. The remake is probably a bit more polished, but they replaced the voice actors and otherwise made some changes some people don't like. Personally, I'd go with the original if you don't mind 90s era games.

There's the unofficial patch for the first game. I'm not sure if it's included in the GoG release but you should probably install it regardless. There's a subtitles patch for the second game.

The original has far better voice acting (Mark Hamill, Tim Curry) which sadly isn’t featured in the remaster.

I used to avoid Sierra games like GRIDS because of the first-act-fucked shitshow that is Gabriel Knight.

I have great memories of watching my brother play these. I remember the oldest original ones in 2D pixel the best. They were like a serious, modern version of Quest for Glory, Police Quest and Space Quest. It still inspires me that it was created by a woman. Sorry to say I can scarcely imagine a female creator in current year being allowed to (or wanting to) make anything with a white male lead, or getting into that creative position for and with good reason.

Also I loved that terrible accent as a kid (:_(

I personally think the The Beast Within is the best in the series, which would probably get me crucified, but the first is a serious classic and probably the one most adventure game fans genuinely enjoy.

All I really know about Gabriel Knight is that the second one, at least the original version, had one of the most excruciatingly abstruse, overly complicated puzzles for what would seem a simple task. It start with getting a fake ID and includes, at one point, needing to get cat hair. And it's right near the start, too. I hope the remaster fixed it up.

That's in the third game.

Third game gets a lot of hate but La Serpent Rouge is one of the best puzzles imo.

Oh yes, I have actually heard of that one in detail. It was a very infamous moon logic puzzle. Didn't realize it was Gabriel Knight that had it.

Far as I know, the second and third games have never been remastered so moon logic stays, but that's yer lot with some older adventure games. I mean, I hated Monkey Island 2's "monkey wrench" puzzle because not having English as my first language meant that the teenage me was fucking confused as to how the fuck that made any sense.

The series was pretty cool. I especially remember 2 and 3 because they looked almost photo realistic for the time. Unfortunately I could never get into them. Too many moon logic puzzles. TBH the only point and click adventure series that really got me hooked was Monkey Island. Even the bullshit jerk off deaths tended to be great in those games.

I believe in the first one there's only one way to die, and it takes a lot of effort for that to happen. Coming from Sierra games with their occasionally random death sequences, Monkey Island was a breath of fresh air and a chance to go light on F5 and F7. Especially when there was a fake-out where it seems you've randomly fallen off a cliff and the standard 'restore/restart' death message appears, but then Guybrush comes flying back through it because he actually hit a rubber plant.
