The last time a big budget version of Cleopatra was made, it pretty much destroyed the studio who made it. And was the last gasp of the old hollywood system. Maybe history repeats itself?

Also, it was overly long. Mainly because the studio wanted one movie to capitalize on the IRL romance of its leads.

edit: nobody wants to watch these sword and sandles remakes. Remember the Ben-Hur remake?

I would love a sword and sandal remake if it was done well. Ben-Hur was not done well. We haven't had a good epic movie since the early 2000s, unfortunately.

The 1960's Cleopatra was supposed to be at least two movies, but the studio eventually cut out a ton of content and shrank it down into one. Somewhere out there is a bunch of lost footage, which would make a hell of a couple of movies if it could be spliced and edited together.

I miss sword and sandal epics. I even enjoyed the 90's Hercules series, as cheesy as they were, for being in the same fun vein as Italian peplum films of the 1960's. Now that sour woke politics have taken over the film industry, I doubt we'll get more fun sword and sandals movies, unless they turn them into gay romances or something like that.

She's marketable. They get to advertise her as The Avatar of Ethnic Triumph (by never using her full name, Zendaya Stormer Coleman) while at the same time patting themselves on the back for "not being racist". Pity about the lack of personality, acting talent, enunciation of words, negative charisma, etc.

My mother is a stickler for historical accuracy and always bitches about these actresses playing Cleopatra looking wrong. But Hollywood is never going to put an ugly hook-nosed actress in the lead. See the Historical Beauty Update trope for why that is.
