Game Censorship & Localization General Thread

Dragon Ball had plenty of that, and it's been a popular touchstone of Japanese culture for decades now.
You will notice newer dragon ball manga and episodes do not have this stuff. When older episodes are rebroadcast a lot of the pantie shots are cut out.

I know first hand Japanese mamas that are reluctant to let their boys get the older manga or watch the older show because of the pantie jokes and Roshi.

How the fuck does that happen? Most shonen are more violent than those games.
CERO is far more strict on games than the equivalent ratings bodies for other media. Video games are interactive so they're the devil, essentially.
Movies can show nudity at any age rating, but games rated by CERO simply can't at any rating.
And the upper limit of violence they allow with a Z rating is much lower than what other countries allow, so even with an 18+ rating, most violent games are censored.

Oh of course they are, but you know most Japanese people really, really hate otaku culture right? Even censored porn on DVD has a big social stigma, you start adding in comics of kids being fucked it's easily 80-90% of the population that's against this stuff, and most see upskirts as being part of the same culture.
I doubt that.

Japan is way more open about otaku shit than the west is. Good luck finding gunpla at the local grocery shop, or finding anime merch in pound land, or people reading manga/watching anime on a train.

The hobby stuff isn't an issue. Gunpla is popular for kids. Same with anime.

The issue the adult shut ins that want to rape kids.

I think what @Baraka Obama is trying to say is that like everything else, anime/manga has been corporatized. Meaning that the stuff presented to the wider world is sanitized, and we only know about the seedy underbelly because we are on the Internet.

There is still localization and Western censorship of Japan-made media? I thought the Current Year Clown World way was for creators in Japan -- at least a number of big ones -- to listen to Western soys, and release media simultaneously worldwide for "global audiences" now. Like how new pocketmons vidyas such as Scarlet and Violet were released.

This push is wholly because Western institutions are putting pressure on Japan, but also because Japanese companies are slowly being infected with their homegrown Marxist insurrectionists, who take all their cues from the woketards here.
Reiwa Japan seems to be getting getting suckier and suckier.

I can't believe this troon keeps on falling upwards. Damn I wish "her" prospering grounds thread gained traction instead of fizzling out.

I've been slowly growing more of a hatred for localizers in general, especially the more I play any kind of game that is japan language with english text.

Considering I've played fighters most of my life, I eventually pick up the little words/sentences that are repeatedly used by multiple characters (e.g. "Soko Madeda" meaning "That's as far as you go" or "Kanpeki"" meaning "Perfect"), but even simple words like that get mistranslated to this very day in multiple games and it's just so infuriating because it can really take you out of the story, especially if it has anything to do with lore or characterization.

Goddess of Victory NIKKE is the big example I can think of at the moment because it's the one I've been playing the most. Other oddities include normal/regular words being displayed when clearly the japanese spoken language is spewing curse words because you hear the beep censor sound.

Still not over Katrina stating you can learn Japanese through watching anime… Anyone who merely expressed an interest in learning Japanese would know that that’s the worst way to learn Japanese.

The whole industry is rotten and plagued with nepotism. If you're on good terms with the cathedral you're going to get power with-in the hierarchy, even if your despised.

I avoid english where I can. As It stands now I only have to play the most text-heavy games in english. STG's, fighters and platformers can be played only knowing how to read the menu's and that doesn't take too many words.

normalize the term lolcowlizer, because most people in that industry are lolcows.

Considering they screwed over players in the west in favor of Chinese players, I'm not shocked that outside Stellar Blade, Shift Up treats their players like garbage. The seasons pass shit is why I quit playing Nikke. GFL2 is going to die if they make their season's pass system as egregious as that.

Silent Hill has gone woke. Realize that Japan is no longer safe.

This is kind of a random thing to post about, but I just wanted to tell someone about it. I was playing through Final Fantasy III recently while looking through the scripts of both the Famicom and Pixel Remaster versions. Unlike I and II which were moderately rewritten in the WonderSwan and PS1 versions and that got carried over into future versions including the Pixel Remaster, III never got any older remakes except the heavily changed 3D one, so the Pixel Remaster script is almost identical to the Famicom script with just some reformatting (using kanji and extra punctuation which is easier to read). So it stands out a lot when something is suddenly different between the two version.

There's exactly two instances of the word 狂う meaning "go crazy" or "be insane" being used in the Famicom version of FF3. The Pixel Remaster version rewrites both lines to remove the word. There's a normally peaceful sea dragon that's gone out of control at one point in the game. An NPC says
Famicom: The Nepto Dragon has started rampaging as if gone mad.
Pixel Remaster: The Nepto Dragon has started rampaging.
At another point, there's a king that's doing crazy stuff because he's possessed by a demon. An NPC says
Famicom: The king has gone mad...
Pixel Remaster: The king has changed...

I checked the equivalent lines in the 3D remake, which rewords and changes the script a lot more anyway, and the second line has basically the same change, but the first line still had the "as if gone mad" part. There's no obvious reason why these two lines would be the one of like 5 lines in the game that are different between the Famicom and PR scripts, so I can't help but wonder if some consultant told Square Enix that crazy is a bad word they shouldn't use and that's why they were rewritten.

While I'm on the subject, as mentioned there's a lot of rewritten lines between the Famicom and later versions of FF1 and FF2. One line that stood out to me in FF2 though was that if you talk to Gordon at one specific point, he'll express shock at you accomplishing your mission and say something like "You're such a brave bunch. One of you is even a frail woman. In contrast, I'm pathetic..." The "one of you is even a frail woman" part is missing from the Pixel Remaster script. I thought maybe it was an old change, but I found footage from the PS1 version and it's still there in that version. I can't find footage to quickly check the GBA and PSP versions, but it might be a change done specifically to the Pixel Remaster version. And I can't see any reason it would suddenly be removed except for political correctness reasons.

And talking about this also reminds me of something else similar. Some time ago I played both the Famicom and Switch versions of Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir. Kind of like FF1 and FF2, there's a fair amount of rewriting between the original and remake, but mostly just adding more detail or rewording sentences to sound more natural. But there's one part I noticed where when you're looking at the corpse of a guy who was stabbed to death, when you ask the nearby cop about it in the Famicom version he says that with how deeply the knife is stabbed into him it's "likely not something a woman's strength could do". In the remake he simply says that with how deeply it's stabbed "the murderer must have been pretty strong".

I don't get it, what's woke about this?
People nowadays think that every depiction of man in a bad light is somehow an attack on the entirety of manhood, despite bad dads existing all around the world. "Nooo, you can't make a guy a bad guy! Let's ignore how the game also depicts young women as backstabbing cunts and all the other stuff! Hinako is such a #girlboss for fighting against the #patriarchy! Japan gone WOKE! My favorite Youtuber said so, so it must be true!".

Bitching about the "patriarchy" is the exclusive domain of feminists.

No, you dumb banned woke faggot, see above.

So basically what your fellow triangle friend said and any complaining about a male character by a female character is considered "woke" now. Figured this was just more cuckchan political outrage with no substance, and considering the context I'm also not surprised you're stupid enough to not see the irony here. God forbid le feminists go after abusive husbands and fathers in the 1960s Japan! You tell them, maybe you should go straight up to their office and break a bottle of whiskey on their heads while you're at it, that would really drive a point home to these subhuman holes what they REALLY need to think! If you don't teach them that early on, like animals, they will never learn!

Yes. That's exactly what we're all saying. You figured it out. Just like how any black person in any game ever is woke. Definitely not a disingenuous reading whatsoever, certainly not lacking in any degree of nuance. You hit the nail on the head.
