Gamefaqs - An old gaming website that still exists somehow

Fritz Fraundorf made real FAQs? I remember he made Beath of Flams, a FAQ about a fictional RPG (Called IAQs back then).

Fuck, this shit was cringy but I loved it when I was twelve.
Yes, that's him. I was very proud as a kid because I submitted stuff for Beath of Flams II that got included..too bad he never finished that one.

I wrote IAQs in the 6th and 7th grade before I discovered rpgmaker, oh boy...what a time.

He did legit guides for Breath of Fire 2, 3, Tales of Destiny, some Zork game and FFT. The BOF3 and FFT ones were pretty comprehensive tbh.

I visited gamefaqs a lot back then, my first journey into this was to get some info on how to get past the laser beams in the first dungeon of Ganbare Goemon 3, but never visited the boards.

Looks like the dumpster fire is still lit, and that Mii Kouryuuji fanboy is a potential lolcow.

Imagine my surprise when I go back to GameFAQs in TYOOL 2019 and find out they deleted all Gameshark codes.

I'm like, "Why would you do that? Aren't you supposed to be the best at this?".

Apparently it happened thanks to GameSpot. Fuck'em.

They used to have save files too. But those went away a long time ago. I guess there's some legal reason for removing those. But the codess? Really? The cheat section only has the in game codes. Very boring. That's not what people usually want when looking for codes. However, if you check the FAQs sections you will see see savestate hacking guides. And some supplimental FAQs also have codes if they are needed to pull something off.

None of my work was ever deleted off the boards so I assume it's still ok to post codes. People used to post links to patches. If they still do then it's still ok. I often check certain boards to see if an English patch is out yet. But since my PC died I havn't done it much lately.

Well, that's upsetting. I submitted a lot of those and didn't keep copies of my Dreamcast ones since I submitted them directly through the browser way back when.

Still, it's probably because you had to use a bunch of unlicensed 3rd party stuff to extract your saves and load them on your computer. N64 and PS1 had to use something called a Dexdrive, a little memory card reader you could buy at Electronic Boutique that'd hook up over your serial port. None of it was illegal, but I wouldn't put it past Nintendo to be a hot penis over save sharing. They're still acting autistic about it to this day.

After a certain point, all the save files were from emulated copies of the game and meant for emulators. GameFAQs didn't want to even passively promote piracy so...that's the reason why it went.

At least, that's what my memory recalls.

I went on the Dragon Quest XI for PS4 board to see if there were any hints for the horse races, and the only hint was some idiot saying there’s an item you can get in the Switch version that makes the races easier. So helpful.
If you want to beat the races for all the important stuff, take every shortcut possible. The Highest tier races are not really needed for anything be it completion or trophy requirements. You can miss a few speed boosts, but the shortcuts are more important. There's maps of the courses.

I absolutely loath minigame shit that's a roadblock, but every needed race be it for a sidequest item or outfit for the trophy wasn't hard and they were over within 10-15 minutes.

Seeing as GameFAQs is an old as fuck website, I'm wondering if the tradition of using the boards of older obscure games for completely different purposes can come back, assuming their weird censorship policies haven't gotten worse in the age of auto-flagging and bots.
Shaq Fu was a weird board once upon a time too, there was one guy posting to himself, and maintained an entire page of threads made by him, and replies with the same username praising the same shit over, simply as performance art because it was a dead game in the 2000s and basically his personal little slice of the site.

I'm a former LUE poster, it definitely had /b/ vibes before /b/ existed and even though I survived mild use after that 2003 lockdown, I drifted to Ebamsworld just for the image galleries and videos in 2003 then resumed posting on 4chan when it was new based on the recommendation of a guy who was even more plugged in than I was. I assumed my account was closed to inactivity but I might be able to reactivate/retrieve it if it wasn't pointless and a shithole to post at. Mods were definitely fags on GameFAQs in general, but I still go back for the actual FAQs on anything from PS2-era down. The quality is unparalleled. No surprise really that there's other LUE lurkers and users here in this still-short thread.

Oh, you know one mod that popped into my head recently? Enygmatic. He was fairly prolific on Current Events for a while, and would post about being a sadbrains who worked a menial job and couldn't talk to women, but had a certain holier-than-thou vibe to him, even beyond GameFAQs' usual standards. His real name was Jonathan something, from Fresno, CA I think. Weird guy, I don't remember that much about him, though I remember he was weirdly standoffish and didn't have much of a sense of humor.

Here's an ancient picture of him from '03:

I'd like to take a moment to bitch about how fuckjng retarded the people over on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake board are. The demo for the game recently got datamined and that released a metric ton of information about the game including the estimated endpoint of the game.

Since the leak happened you've got your usual people discussing it and getting pissy/excited about how long they think the game will be. That said, there are absolute fucking mongoloids bitching about how the game will only cover the Midgar section of the game and not the whole game like they thought. Kind of like how SE said that that's what was going to happen. Its absolutely fucking stunning that people are upset the game will end exactly where they said it would end instead of it being a surprise full game.

I just want to kill myself in frustration at these people. Christ.

People are seriously shocked that the remake is episodic? That was announced 2 years ago or close to it.

I know not everyone follows gaming news, but one would think FF7 fans would be old enough to have gotten into the habit of kind of checking every now and again. Even with adblockers, Gamefaqs has Gamespot articles shoved in your face. You'd need to be blind, selectively literate, or using element blockers to not notice.

This site seems to have the same demographic as resetera.
It's getting there. Occasionally on the larger boards people will make threads about some Reeera hot take or controversy and half the posts are invariably people defending Reeera and calling anyone who doesn't like them evil. Like when some Era sperg got upset about the feather on Mr. Game & Watch's head in Smash Ultimate.

I dunno...

Here's Enygmatic's profile now. There's nothing there except for a few reviews.

I may not have used GameFAQS in the early 2000s but I found a website with information about a bunch of old users.
