The real question is what kind of person requires guides these days; and there's two ways I can split this (probably more with some real thought).

The first guide criteria is specific guides; like getting a rare/hidden thing or trophy/achievements/collectibles and the like, or tests of skill like beating a developer time trial score. These are narrow in scope but usually more in depth as it's about a specific thing and what actions must be taken to achieve said thing.

The second guide criteria is how to beat game; outside of high-skill required games like Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden, it's lowest common denominator gamers like DSP. Most people might find themselves in a bad situation or unable to tackle a specific boss or something; but a majority of go through the entire game guides can be ignored. They just get made to fill in every part or to say "use X-item which we got way back at Y-place."

As an aside; if you view the Q&A section of games; you'll see decent enough questions, but often a OMG I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO and it's so vague that you either have to write 12 different fucking solutions because you can't discern where the fuck up is, or if you ask for clarification it's just I DON'T KNOW I JUST DID THIS AND IT DIDN'T WORK. The worst of all are people asking for trading online shit, DLC, gamesaves, and other shit.

Video guides have the potential to be better but so many of them don't have bookmarks or the guy who uploaded it wastes time by talking about unnecessary shit.

Most other written sites have a shit ton of ads, and even with ad and script blockers you have to scroll through a lot of crap and deal with crashing webpages. I've also noticed that several of these sites just rip a guide from GameFAQs anyway, so why not go to the source? Steam guides are the most convenient but there's no quality control so you have to scroll through a bunch of meme guides.

I still also only use gamefaqs too for the same reasons. because a text based guide really is infinitely better than a wiki guide or a video and anyone who thinks otherwise is a retard. there are exceptions, sometimes you really need a map or just need to know exactly where something is or where to jump after trying 1000 times so you'd use a video.

besides that every video guide is for babies and retards. it's much faster to ctrl-f and jump to what you need than scrub through a whole video to get to what you're looking for. other than that the other problem, is they're fucking annoying. some loud faggot yelling HEY WHAT'S UP GUYS WELCOME BACK TO PART 212 OF MY WALKTHROUGH OF (x game) BEFORE WE START DON'T FORGET TO LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE AND JOIN THE (faggot) FAMILY! CHECK OUT MY MERCH STORE and then more padding. besides scrubbing to find what you need no commentary videos are a miracle. but if you're flat out using one the whole time, bro you're watching the game twice including when you play it. fuck that.

wiki guides are worse because they're poorly designed and ad filled fuck fests of faggotry from hell, that barely function and half the time are missing the thing you are looking for or it's in a weird area on a page under something else entirely. ign guides are the worst for this. whatever 40 year old autistic trans freaks are on gamefaqs still typing away, I salute you. and then the rest of the fun is peeping in on the forums either before or after and laughing your ass off at how stupid those people are outside of helping with a video game.

Mostly it was just poking fun at the game itself, but I also seem to recall classic stuff like jabs at Bush and fat jokes. I might see if I can find some of it.

Well it seems that earlier concerns about fandom taking over the site were completely right.

Not only did they gut most of the debate and discussion boards. Even the biased moderation enforcing a soft "correct POV" limit, wasn't enough. These people are fully about shutting down and out all wrong think.

Looking at the newer ones:

GameFAQs does not tolerate transphobia in any form. This includes derogatory comments, misgendering, or any other behavior that undermines the dignity and identity of transgender individuals. Users are expected to respect all gender identities and expressions.

You'd think rule #1 and others would cover this stuff like always... but nope, and the reason is clear when you look harder. That is basically the "question or debate any aspect of gender ideology/fetishism and go splat" rule. Those terms can mean anything to a group that screams about mere minor disagreement as genocide.

Of course none of this is surprising since fandom is full of TRAs, and even have someone in charge of running around their sites enforcing troon head canon on media and threatening to ban and block people who "misgender" totally fictional characters, including in debate on the forums for wikis. Many of these cases are complete head canon or based on some tiny or clearly incorrect interpretation. One Piece was one of the more visible cases.

• #8 Hornyposting

GameFAQs prohibits the posting of sexually explicit or excessively lewd content, commonly referred to as "hornyposting". This includes but is not limited to explicit descriptions or discussions of sexual acts, images or videos containing nudity or explicit content, objectification, and solicitation of sexual encounters. Users are expected to maintain a respectful and appropriate atmosphere in all discussions and interactions on the site.

Well there you go.. This basically puts an end to all "favorite girl" and "cute/sexy girl" topics, and likely censorship debates as well. (i've seen quite a few topics about specific censorship go poof in the last year or so) This is a more formal "frat boy culture" rule, as well as anything females feminists and SJWs don't like. (think all the screeching on places like ReeeeEra about being "welcoming" and "safe" etc)

This particularly puts into perspective the fandom decision to delete and ban a lot of ecchi, hentai and fanservice heavy series from fandom wikis/sites a few years ago. It wasn't about advertising, it was about this kind of crap. (not exactly a surprise)

Even with minor shit like do I want to spend ten minutes trying to solve this puzzle or figure out who I need to talk to, or do I just fucking look it up if it even takes a sec too long. I can't tell if this is just now that I'm an adult I don't have endless time to puzzle these things out, or just now I can look up the answers to almost any game in a few seconds. It's probably a mix of both

If you use the Indie Wiki Buddy browser extension than you can get by with modern wikis for modern games. Just did a more or less 100% playthrough for Cyberpunk 2077 using the fandom wiki for virtually everything, and the page looks fine with all the horseshit removed, thanks to that extension. Also has options to redirect you to a non-Fandom alternative if one is available, or to put a link to it at the top of Fandom pages.

As for walkthroughs, the archive of all of the .txt files hosted on GameFAQs as of early 2020 is literally just under 13 GB, so one can get the vast majority of that content without even visiting the site. As for help from the forums, Co-Pilot often uses GameFAQs posts as sources when trying to help with a game. In other words, you can mostly avoid going there since the bulk of the content has been scraped/can be scraped.
