Gamefaqs - An old gaming website that still exists somehow

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I was actually not familiar with him, but seeing a picture of him and finding out that he wrote for Polygon is, along with what you said, highly informative.
Kuchera was among the first wave of US games writers to be bought off by Microsoft. He, on multiple occasions, would praise MS and the Xbox for doing things he published articles tearing other companies a new asshole for. He was incredibly odious, and one of the proto-woke puritanical assholes wringing his hands over GTA, Yakuza and other games. He also had a bad habit of deleting comments critical of his takes from his articles, as he apparently still had mod access to the forum/comments system on Ars.

The rules were impossible to follow and extremely selective. Most of the mods were 25+ and grooming these teenage kids, doing nasty things with them online. Thank God video was not much of something a computer could handle at the time, but smartphones were only a handful of years ahead.

There was one mod that was some kind of witch that gave young boys sexual advice and someone narced on her to her job. She didn't get fired but it definitely was a source of contention there.

Before you ask, no i don't know who she is, username is in the back of my head somewhere but she put this wiccan symbol in her "sig"

something like that

The only admin/mod I can think of that got sacked was Krystal, which I think was already discussed here. IIRC, she showed favoritism to one of the most annoying manchildren on the website, BarenziahBoyToy, and it pissed off more or less everyone involved.

Anyways, I found this at random today trying to find specs of off-standard famicom cartridges.

CBZ652 has over 4000 physical video games, and his account is "only" 15 years old, so he is just a pup compared to the old timers. If you are modded for "offensive content" it is most likely because you are too based for someone who spends more on video games every month than you do on your car.

She was going by "Ayl" iirc and that was short for whatever her username was. Maybe she was "Aileen." And was in a specific forum maybe more will come back as I think about it

I think this was after my time. I was in the early-mid 2000s

Many mods have been sacked. Hell, I seem to recall one of the lead mods (I believe it was OTACON120) was caught selling mod-only info to one of the KoS-Krew people (might have been Gavirulax). When mods get sacked it's just generally done quietly.

Her account name was "CrystalMoon" and she was going by the name Ail. She used to frequent the Poll of the Day board and she was a local lowcow there. She sometimes referred to people by their first name and abused her mod powers. One day, she just disappeared and then KatThePoet made a topic addressing her. My guesses was either one of her a-logs doxxed her and she had to "quit" since she worked at an university as a professor in Edinburg, Scotland, or she died or went crazy. People there made fun of her witch symbol and refer to it as the Tie Fighter from Star Wars posting "))O(( --- *pewpew*". She used to have a long wiki page in the potd wiki but it's dead now and can't be found.

My favorite thing about walkthroughs on Gamefags is how many of them are presented as a continuous narrative, like it's a whole complete story with references, callbacks and inside jokes. Like the target audience is a person who sits down and follows the guide from start to finish, rather than looking up one thing when they're stuck.

Interesting observation, it's something that I've also noticed on Resetera (well, in the screenshots that get posted here, I don't go there myself). They just "answer" the thread topic like it's a survey question with some dull one-liner and move on.
GameFAQs is a very old website that predates YouTube and was from an era where the Internet was mainly text and most people were on dial-up. If you wanted to know what a game was like, there were no LPs available. Magazines only covered new games and didn’t cover everything. Walkthroughs were pretty much the only avenue for experiencing a game you didn’t own online.

Supposedly, heavy quotes on that, a bunch of long time mods were forced out because either CJayC or SBAllen were paying them under the table without authorization from the corporate overlords and they were quietly sacrificed. During all the arguments when Allen was trying to force a bunch of guide submission standards, Sash came in claiming he had been paid off and on to do guide authorization. The post was quickly deleted and he wasn't seen posting on site at all for a few months. Take all that as you will.

A good guide can sell a game better than any 10 page review ever could. There's a reason why people wish gaming magazines like what we had pre-2005 still existed.

I mean I don't really know what Ceej or Allen did or didn't do, but I would not consider Sashanan a reliable source on anything.

I haven't looked in years, but the system/hardware FAQs used to be great reading material. Lots of them were more history documents mixed with hardware lore.

This is exactly it!!

I've seen a lot of people trying to figure out what "56k no" is in titles of very very old Something Awful threads

Outed as a pedo groomer on GF and I believe it, but I don't have solid evidence to prove it. They did have usernames of a couple of people that came forward about it, I don't remember if they posted on the boards but they would have been deleted immediately (by Sashanan)

I look for maps on GF and they are a really good resource on there that may not show up in Google searches. Sometimes I don't like the maps and make some of my own, or guides for short games, but there's no way in hell I'm posting on there. I'm banned anyway because I couldn't take the mods fucking "ephebophile" bullshit anymore and posted that I am twelve.
