Gamefaqs - An old gaming website that still exists somehow

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Oh my, i still remember being part of board RP shenanigans way back in the day. it was horribly cringy and I'm glad all those posts have been lost to time so i don't have to go back and look at them again.

Don't know if its changed since then, but it was incredibly unhelpful to ask for help if a game didn't have an answer in the faq, since 9 times out of 10 older posters would just get snobby and blow you off.

Jesus Christ. Now there's a website I haven't thought about in like a decade. GameFaqs was hot shit in the early internet days. When YouTube didn't exist, and the best way to get video game info was magazines until this shit came along. I'd spend hours reading the user reviews and FAQs.

The boards never really appealed to me much, but I partook in a few of them. I assume now it's a cesspit of ulra-lefties, SJWs and tranny jannys? Plus the website was purchased by Gamespot, one of the most reprehensible video game "media" shitstains imo. Such a sad ending for a once great website, kind of like Something Awful in a way.

I used that site all the time back in the late 90s/early 2000s. Boards were complete garbage though. Worst moderators and most draconian "rules" I've ever seen on a website. You could get your account permabanned by joking that you signed up as a fetus. The autists there apparently couldn't understand exagerrated humor and really took the "do not register if you're under 13" rule literally. One of the more well known mods there (Sashanan I think his name was) got exposed as a pedo back in the day.

Classic website, great guides for older games. I used to lurk/occasionally post on the forums up until a few years ago. Nice vintage site and the moderation is better now than a lot of sites on the internet since you can actually discuss controversial political issues without being banned for refusing to tow the progressive stance.

There's plenty there but you're allowed to discuss political shit a lot more than you are on other websites. Like you could actually have a pro-Gamergate thread a few years ago without it being deleted/you being banned there like almost everywhere else.

As everyone else said it was the shit in the early part of the century. If you wanted game codes or were stuck on part of a zelda game it was pretty much the go to place, whereas now there gorillions of places to find out anything about a game.

I remember actually buying strategy guides one time in history, when gamefaqs hit the scene it was a game changer.

GameFAQs, hahahahahahahahahaha. Jeff "CJayC" Veasey is a faggot.

The GameFAQs forums are notoriously garbage, but their biggest issue is how they're moderated. Their moderation staff doesn't think for themselves like just about anywhere else, even fucking Reddit; they go strictly by-the-book. You couldn't cuss on there until just a few years ago, so even just typing "s***" would get you a notification, to let you know that you broke the "Censor Bypass" rule. Do that again within a short timeframe, and you'll be bumped up to a "Warning". But if time passes and the moderation expires, you'll only get a notification again.

This led the forums to be a toxic shithole where regulars skirt the rules all over the place, trying to provoke one another into getting in trouble. So, over time, most of the userbase became trolls, looking for any which way they can to piss one another off, ad infinitum. There's also a new feature where you can ignore other users, but you can't actually see who's ignoring you, so you could type up a reply, or even a PM, to someone only for them to just not see it, which kinda sucks since there's no way to know if you're wasting your time. They also discourage long-form posting, since everything purges out and gets locked so quickly. And despite how literally every video game ever made gets its own dedicated board, it's not really worth posting on any that are dead, since the two-weeks-to-lock rule still applies, and it might be months before someone else even sees your topic.

The crazy thing is, the social boards have remained largely unchanged for nearly two decades, with a lot of users with really old accounts posting on them. If there was one guy from GameFAQs who could be classified as a lolcow, it'd be MrDuckBear. I know he goes under different usernames, but he seems to be a severely autistic Asian man who registered his first account, "mrduckbear3" in 2000, and just homesteaded there, still posting nineteen years later. He drifts around various social boards, posts news stories, and acts generally... weird. Kinda like CWC, come to think of it.

There's also LUE, a board that was pretty much an early r/atheism that ended up getting quarantined for being a shithole. When the quarantine hit, you could only access it if you registered and requested access back in like 2003. It's still active. If you want access today, you missed the boat by about 16 years.

So here's a screenshot of it:

This is fairly accurate. The way the rules were applied from approximately 2005-2015 or so made it a shitposter's purgatory of sorts where esoteric trolling techniques that technically didn't break any rules but still pissed users off in various ways were the name of the game. The site is really showing its age these days and will probably more or less die sometime in the next decade or two. There's really no point in posting on the social boards unless you've already been there for years because everything is a basically a circlejerk in one way or another.

Gamefaqs really has turned into a dumpster fire. I used to post there regularly 10-15 years ago, and decided to make a new account for shits and giggles last summer. I didn't last 4 or 5 months before being banned and was suspended several times before that, for nothing worse than tame shitposting or even civil disagreement. The moderation there is anti-moderation. They will basically act on any report without bothering to look at what was reported and trying to figure out if it was worth being reported or not. The mods will actually message people and tell them it's their fault for posting unpopular things that get them reported. So the worst users just spam report anyone who disagrees with them and the mods blindly censor people on their behalf. They have somehow managed to become worse than Reddit when it comes to punishing decent users and rewarding the bad ones. It's turned most of the active boards there into cesspools of troll accounts, gimmick users, and their sockpuppets.

Oh also, if you try to post the word 'autist' on there, it stops you before posting to tell you you're not allowed to make fun of autists.

I have an almost 18 year old account there. I still occasionally lurk boards for games I'm interested in and use one of their guides when need to but I haven't regularly been to the place in over a decade now. I never really had a problem posting there, though I mostly avoided the social boards and posted mainly on ones for niche JRPGs.

I have only used gamefaqs as a database for old video games (especially japanese imports) and sometimes for game guides.

I only ever used GameFAQs for the walkthroughs, and the only times I ever ventured into the forums was to find questions about how to get past a certain part or fix some kind of technical problem (and even then I found those threads via Google search). I did notice that a few people had a hair-trigger temper on there which was especially annoying when I just wanted a solution to some glitch or otherwise obscure part in a game the walkthroughs don't do a good job of explaining and the users were arguing over stupid shit.

I used to hang out there regularly in probably 2012 or so. Was a big 360 fan at the time. Mainly was there for achievement guides and walkthroughs.

The thing I remember most was that on the 360 boards there was this one annoying little fucker who just constantly shit up everything with his fanboy xbox warrior sperging. He was one of my first lolcows. Words can't really describe the guy.

He'd pop into threads and derail with completely irrelevant shit about "sony ponies" and how Microsoft is basically god and anyone who dared question anything xbox did would get berated and followed around and called some variation of "sony pony," "salty pony," etc and screeched at to "go back to pony island." I remember his custom title was some random date with the caption "The day of salt on Pony Island." Pretty sure he was also hardcore right wing and brought that up a lot too.

The xbone launch really sent him into defense mode. He started making bizarre threads about the xbone outselling ps4 10 to 1 and other blatant lies, insisting it could do everything short of cure cancer basically, and constantly declaring victory over ponies. I kept expecting him to get banned but he never was. He may have gotten restricted from the playstation boards though because he kept going there and harassing people. Even the xbox people were getting sick of him.

Last year I was on there looking for something, and the guy is STILL there. I'd always assumed he was a dumb 12 year old troll or something but it turns out he's actually like 36 and completely dead serious. He'd been doing his thing there since 2006. Now he had his gamertag on his profile which brought up all his dox within seconds. The guy's entire life revolved around cheevos and "dumping salt on stupid ponies" and it was one of the saddest things I've seen.

Last time I saw him, he was considering moving to ResetERA to escape the toxic environment of gamefaqs. Good luck with that.

This is just pathetic. The guy's almost 40 and yet he's so asshurt about people having different opinions than him and on video games no less. He's the very definition of a neckbeard and I'm willing to bet he still lives with his parents with that attitude.

I would love to see the shitstorm that's going to cause.
