How are you going to go after major advertisers though? As you pointed out you can't even get the gamers to stop buying games that are shit, so how are they even going to collect themselves into a bizarro-world million moms group that can demand respect from advertisers and is a powerful factor that marketers take into account?

I'm wondering if it's even worth bothering about the big corpos.
They're never coming back. They've already perfected the slop formula and the slop audience.
I feel that the games industry has already been balkanized; into the hamster wheels and the actual gaming zone. I thought I couldn't care less about AAA a decade ago and yet I'm still suprised at how low they can take it.
If today's AAA industry suddenly became identical to China's MMO hell overnight:
Would there be any serious complaints? Would there be any monitary penalties?

It’s sad to say this but despite the influence of the CCP there’s a part of me that wonders if Chinese devs would be better at making video games than the current establishment. They may even be less aggravating politically.

I know, I'm not saying you're wrong. It's just one of those things journalists will constantly harp on, about it being this common black slang when in reality, none of them ever use it. Not even once in awhile.
I remember her from way back in the day. I don't remember much of her music though so I'll look her up.

That is literally the first thing GG did, mass mail advertisers and sponsors saying they weren't going to buy from them anymore if they kept funding those journos, that's when the whole "they are harassing whamen!" shit started and sponsors were told those sending that mail were part of that.
But what truly killed momentum was indeed that gamers are the biggest FOMO idiots only second to cryptotards and can't for the life of them not buy the latest game, which is probably why so many cryptoscams targeted gamers too (see NFT games)

Interesting how serial failure Carolyn Petit is the only one of the original group of morons to still be there.
All of the others from the Autism Holy War era have moved on, bouncing from gig to gig at outlets that hire them because of who they know - The worse one off would be Leigh Alexander, who left ages ago and last I checked, is hanging around with a group of 20-year-olds in Brighton, doing hard drugs and acting like she's still in fucking college. Nathan Grayson works at the Washington Post, where he does basically the shit he always has, slightly less autistically for his earlier failures. Patricia Hernandez is a freelance writer and "consultant" who mostly just spergs on Twitter these days. Luke Plunket's at Aftermath and still a fucking embarrassment. Kate Cox works at The Verge. Patrick Klepek seems to be on a permanent walking tour of different journo agencies but to his credit, he does spend less time screaming about nonsense and a lot more time covering actual games these days.
Jason Schrier, the only one of the original Kotaku staffers to have anything resembling journalistic credibility (still a hack at the end of the day) works for Bloomberg, which stands to reason as he was one of the only batch doing actual work at that side. Stephen Totilo, the other Kotaku staffer that was doing actual work at the time, and now works for Axios, which again, tracks.
The ones that genuinely moved up int he industry are rarer. Cara Ellison runs her own studio now, which isn't surprising as she was the only one of the crew with actual game creation talent. Kirk Hamilton and Andrew McMillen both seem to have gone into music, where they genuinely seem happier as well. Chris Priestman's kind of the biggest standout as he's one of the heads behind Disco Elysium, so while he's technically doing the same shit he always has, he's certainly putting his money where his mouth is.
Petit's the only one still at Kotaku, and it's very clear it's because she doesn't have the talent and/or isn't liked enough to be invited to follow the others, which, considering she was responsible for this madness, also kind of tracks.

No, what killed momentum was social media sites intentionally altering how their trends and feeds curated.
Twitter in particular, but all of them did it to some capacity or another. GG at the height of its momentum could - and did - seize oppositional hashtags with impunity, could overwhelm the usual suspects in their own backyards and give them both barrels verbally in the comments sections. This would not do, and in 2015, they made changes - Twitter changed it so that tags they didn't like would never Autocomplete and never trend.
This was intended for use against GG specifically, but naturally it was immediately used by them for basically every political or social movement they didn't like. By itself, this was a death sentence for a consumer revolt centered around a hashtag - GG's favored hashtags would never autocomplete and were blocked from trending entirely. Even dedicated thunderclap campaigns of like 400K posts couldn't get tags trending over ones Twitter specifically put there with maybe 3500 posts.
Twitter wasn't the only platform to do this: Google in general did it, especially on Youtube. It was a dry run for the same shit you'd see used by these platforms going forward.

All their "theories" are childish and uninteresting too. The long list of dumb shit they believe in are usually just little variations of existing conspiracy theories that have been around forever. Only "their" version has been heavily "dumbed down" and altered specifically refer to them. Oh, and pretty much all of their theories exist to explain away why they're so backwards and pitiful in virtually every measurable category, despite the fact that they were ruling galaxy spanning empires from their flying pyramid space armada's until only like, 140 years ago.
And those cringe as fuck people probably think they're real cutting edge for using such, "hip, modern, AAVE."
