Games Journalism General

Holy fucking shit, what a day. Kotaku openly admitting that they want to shut down as soon as possible and fagging up Japan at an increased rate.

What a time to be alive.

After promising "weird" and "creative" new content was in the works, Giant Bomb announced one of their new shows is literally just a Let's Play of the Dark Souls franchise.

Two additional shows were announced: A "gaming insider" news show (NOT a podcast) and a series of videos where each Giant Bomb staff member will talk about a game they feel is a hidden gem. Only the first episode of each new show will be free. The rest will be under their premium model.

Also: Outside of the latter, none of these shows will feature long-term GB staff - instead, their "rotating cast" of on-screen talents will be taking their place.

Well outside of Rorie and JG, who else is long term there.

They went out of their way to say that GB was able to "contract" with some ex-employees (specifically, Dan Rykert - although it would likely be more than him and could include basically anyone).

None of that has happened yet. A fucking Dark Souls LP, oh my god, how innovative. No one has ever done that before. GB has already quick looked every game and done major content with most of them, not sure why they went back to the well on this one. It's incredibly unlikely that two game journalists have never played any dark souls games so I'm not sure what the draw is.

My guess is that Jeff is out of touch, and still assumes the Dark Souls is the popular, hot button game dejour.

I'm going over that Kotaku article and respond to the highlights.
I want to dismantle and redefine what a video game website can be. I do not like what I see. Where to even begin?
Patricia is a Gamergater?

I hate the coverage cycle of big-budget video games, and how a game is never more important than when it doesn’t exist yet—or when it just launched.
I agree. If only there was a website that covered niche gaming culture, focused on Japanese game culture and weird games related to it.

I hate that so much of what video game websites consider worthy of coverage is often written for a specific type of presumed reader.
Gamers?

video game websites often have to take care in explaining basic-ass concepts like “racism is real.”
Racism has nothing to do with games, so it doesn't need explaining.

The presumed reader looks or sounds nothing like me, and yet here I am, leading a video game site.
No one else is reading the site.

It’s not a matter of being “woke.” It is a matter of survival.
Are there game journalism death squads I don't know about?

Video game websites, as they exist now, repeatedly fail to represent the wide swath of people who play games. And every year that passes, this failure becomes more and more evident.
More evidence she's on the side of GamerGate.

if we do reach this mythical mainstream gamer, it’s likely because Google willed it—not because we’ve cultivated that dedicated readership.
Maybe if you had editorial standards, and a writing staff instead of a revolving door of no-name "freelancers", people would stick around.

Your favorite game website is likely quietly bankrolled by guides and service writers who try to predict what people will search next, not news writers, critics, or reviewers.
Still seething over the new Gawker owners telling you to stop politisperging I see.

gaming websites fail the capital G gamer repeatedly,
Patricia confirmed for GamerGater!

I’m beginning to think my future grandchildren might still have to play the same duct-taped version of GTA Online that I have.
Your cats don't count grandchildren.

What’s new and shiny has no bearing on what will actually take off with the public, as evidenced by Among Us.
But video game websites, as they exist now, cannot truly keep up with our subject matter.
Being up to date on certain big games is a job unto its own, only achievable if you focus solely on that title alone—or at least, only a few of them. But the mandate of a video game website is to cover widely.
Then do that. Cover a wide variety of games. AAA games and games made by people you're fucking is not wide coverage. And no, having sex with every soybeard in California doesn't count.

because playing video games does not really seem like “work,” it’s not something reporters can talk about freely without sounding like assholes. Woe is us, it’s a tragedy that we have to sacrifice a weekend to properly cover that big game that isn’t available to the public yet. What is there to complain about when we probably got that game for free?
Writers, especially those with marginalized identities, often have to grapple with nonstop anger.
Anger that we get paid to do something many people would gladly do for free. Anger stoked by influencers who need you to believe game journalists are awful, and they alone have your interests at heart. Anger fueled by four years of constant propaganda that mainstream media is fake news and not to be trusted. Anger that the news we report sometimes doesn’t present video games and its communities in a positive light to the wider public.

But harm does not require an army. All it takes is one asshole going out of their way to ensure a writer sees their bigoted screed.
Seems weird to describe your own site like that, but okay.

I want to print stories that you’d be able to tell a friend about at a bar, even if they don’t play games.
So video game stories that have nothing to do with video games.

I do not care if the language or attitude at Kotaku appears proper and respectable. Fuck that.
@Water-T got it right. She is a 12 year old.

Games are human
Oh fuck, not this again.

There was a GDC talk where a Kotaku journalist (why they were giving a talk about animation is a mystery to me) said that game characters are real, and players are tyrants making them do things against their will.
GDC kept deleting comments.
For those who don't want to listen to the talk. The relevent clips are in the first couple of minutes here.

If we want the world to stop treating games like mere toys
Welcome to 2006

nothing but the truth is treated as sacred
Didn't Kotaku recently publish an article claiming Near commited suicide because of Kiwi Farms with no evidence he's dead, no evidence of if it was suicide, and no evidence that Kiwi Farms caused it?

Games matter! But also, games are silly and weird,
Fuck off back to Extra Credits you hipster.

The future of Kotaku, to me, spans beyond video games.
Again, a video game site that's not about video games.

Earlier she was complaining that suits were dictating coverage based on popular search terms instead of video games, and now she's saying this.

To properly showcase video game culture, it’s necessary to talk about our digital lives more broadly.
No you don't. No one cares about what you do on Twitter.

To steal a joke from @Corn Flakes , see you at the bankruptcy meeting.

brad and vinny already did dark souls lps in load out last souls

Nintendo of Japan has bent the knee to Diversity.

Troons have been trucked into their Japanese headquarters.

This is also tied to Japan's Equality Act itself because corporations who are doing shit like backing The Olympics had to do it.
So they'll probably go back to business once the Olympics are over? Either way why do we tolerate the Olympics? Every time I read an article about a nation hosting them it costs more to host it then they get in tourism or revenue from it.

Hello, Kotaku. We meet again. But this time, nobody can stop me.

I kid, I kid.
I've noticed something with leftists who get into some sort of position with power (jannie, forum mod etc).

They HAVE to tell us plebs they possess power over us. Patricia from kotaku tries to "kid" about her new power but it's just thinly veiled delight.

Same thing happened with deer trans girl from twitch which you might remember. As soon as he got the job, he couldn't help telling his enemies he wanted to use that power.

I don't trust giving power to leftists, especially not to fat women and troons.

In yet another Snekposter pop culture reference post: "Anyone who has to insist "I am a janny!" is no true janny."

Probably not, Japan's Equality Act is a government thing and they used it as a filter to get corporations to bend to their political desires too.

Also we tolerate the Olympics because of allowing legal Sonic and Mario shipping obviously.

It's been around since 1986 in regards to strict gender equality, why suddenly now is it being used as a cudgel for LGBT and race?

Do you have any idea how profitable troons are from a medical standpoint? As a doctor if you get 3-4 in your practice that's a steady income of a million dollars or more over a few years. The big reason why LGBT with the heavy emphasis on T gets promoted is due to the companies surrounding it from medical instruments, to big pharma, to insurance companies. Attaching transexualism to LGB gives it the moralizing cover to have people not ask questions about the fad.

People want in on that action before the backlash hits. And it will hit because catastrophic vaginal collapse like what happened to Yaniv is what awaits many years down the road.

Yeah, but it seems detrimental to the whole declining birth rate of Japan to encourage troonism.

Dude these are the same entities that supported the opioid crisis before the public became aware of it. It's short term decisions for maximum profit all the way down.
Nigger, Japan never had an opioid crisis.
