Games Journalism General

In other Kotaku news, it looks like they're pulling Carolyn Petit, former second-in-command for Anita Sarkeesian's Feminist Frequency business, out of the garbage bin of unemployment since early 2019.

Surprised to find out that he has his own dedicated thread here, albeit very small and neglected.

Oh man talk about a literal fucking who being necro'd.

That wall of text this brick head wrote about Legend of F. Scott is just peak autistic first worlder blinders on in the great book of "Shit Adults Dont Care About".

Another week, another absurd display of Kotaku's professional demeanor.

Is it so hard to just say that XCOM was made into a bog standard team-combat gacha game on mobile to the dismay of all XCOM fans?
Ah neat, that headline change means the check finally cleared. Glad to see Kotaku up to its usual standards.

I know this thread is to mock “Games Journalism” for being still allowed to pretend to be “journalists” in 2021, but how about we take a break from making fun of “games journalists” and go back to the nostalgic days when lists for the best 100 video games of all time was actually a joy to witness:

It does not matter if one is proud or embarrassed for playing almost half of these. What matters was that for people like me, there was a time when looking at the best games of the mid to late 1990’s was something special for both hardcore and casual gamers alike to come together and appreciate history.

Unfortunately, we’ll never have anything close to something like this again. Not even with special 3DCG like effects for the character models and late 90’s graphic design for the magazine advertisements.

Even after all these years, I’m still a sucker for things like this. (:_(

I'm only missing 15 games from the list.

Not that I disagree because I'm a retard who still enjoys SA1 and 2 but it makes me laugh seeing Sonic Adventure on that list when its the butt of all jokes to these journalist who go back and re-review things because a early 3D platformer on a console with only one analog stick from 1999 is totally going to hold up in 2021.

Nothing wrong with the list, definitely from the era but I actually agree with the choices because in hind sight a lot of the propelled the medium in different ways even they don't hold up to the test of time so much anymore when playing (Mario 64 now a days is a unplayable rage inducing mess, at least that half-assed switch port is.), they're still important and still leave a longer lasting impression than a lot of todays titles.

Oh, my sides, that fucking Half-Life quote.

They made one mistake though. They didn't put Tetris at first place. A magazine I liked/respected always did that for a simple reason: fanboys can't get angry because X and not Y is seen as the best game ever, instead they will be mildly confused. Really takes the wind out of their sails.

Well he finally got the 'real' journo job he always wanted. Can't wait to see what how badly it goes when he realizes jeff is the overlord.

Another rat also jumped ship from Kuntaku: Ash Parrish, the Ta-Neshi Coates of games journalism, in that both love to constantly mention being black. Her goodbye article has "black woman" in the title, FFS

I guess she left to be Kyle Kallgren's new girlfriend, now that Jourdain "HAVE I MENTIONED THAT I'M A DISABLED QUEER BLACK WOMAN!?" Searles dumped him.

Resigning from your job at an establishment video game journalist site only to now work at an establishment Washington newspaper to cover more politics in gaming culture

I’m not really sure that this is something that can quantify as a win.

Kotaku and "rape culture"
This is late, but about a month ago Kotaku finally took down the article about Jeremy Soule's alleged harassment of several women. (the link is dead now, here's the latest archived version). The reason is, one of the victims featured in the article accused the author, Cecilia d'Anastasio, of misreporting and exploiting the victims. She published several lengthy blogpost detailing her experiences with D'Anastasio. This is all very long to read, but the important bits are:
-D'Anastasio only brings up two women, when there were more alleged victims who shared their stories, but apparently they couldn't bring up sufficient evidence.
- Woman provided the receipts of her messages with the composer to prove she wasn't flirting with him. D'Anastasio framed it as the flirting was mutual and consensual.
- The woman who published the blogposts claims she was affected the most and received unwanted sexual attention as a result of D'Anastasio publishing the details of her sexual assault in the original version of the article.

^The article was revised multiple times and the quote above was no longer present in the latest version before the article was removed.

Take it as you will, but this becomes relevant in the midst of the current ActiBlizz situation where more people are accusing Kotaku of covering up stories of sexual abuse before.
