Games that are tumblr bait, but good. Doesn’t have to be intentional.

Sayonara Wild Hearts.
Cool playable music video. Great soundtrack, fun character and level designs.
I feel bad classifying this as tumblr bait cuz god damn it is so gorgeous and creative.

Obvious answer is Undertale. There’s no way Tumblr wasn’t going to shit itself over that game, but despite its cancerous fan base the game IS legitimately good, if a bit overrated.
Undertale fixed my toxic relationship with my father, because I killed him for calling understeven “boring” and “not his type of game”

Have you checked out any Undertale AUs and fan musicians? If you do, just know that the rabbit hole never ends. There are hundreds of Undertale AU songs out there to listen to. Dave Minecraft: Trapped, in particular, has awesome songs despite the intentionally stupid concept.

Also, Sentinels of the Multiverse fits this thread. It is obviously meant to be inclusive and aimed toward the Tumblr audience, but in a way that doesn't seem too forced. If you pay attention to the background story, the heroes aren't perfect, but strive to save the world anyway. It has my favorite background lore in any card game.

Even with the SJW-bait, I genuinely enjoyed the Wolfenstein reboot. TNO and TNC were amazing. Youngblood... let's just not talk about Youngblood.
TNO and The Old Blood were great...
TNC was a letdown, which is also the game where they added the Black Panther and Communist factions and kept referencing "Nazi punching".

Fair. I enjoyed TNC regardless because I sorta enjoyed the more humorous tone, and I genuinely liked some of the characters (straw communist who isn't an actual fucking marxist ree, Super Spesh), plus the gameplay still felt great.

I've not played the Old Blood. It's something I still need to do.

VA-11 Hall-A was most definitely tumblr-like here and there but it didn't feel arbitrarily forced so I was totally fine with it, despite being a tewwible Nazi. Has a cool soundtrack too.
VA-11 Hall-A is one of those games I didn’t expect to absorb me as much as it did. I usually don’t care for VNs, but this one I can honestly recommend.

That's good to know. I have that on my Switch watchlist and just waiting for a sale.

I really enjoyed Night in the Woods until *it* happened. I found the characters charming and the story intriguing but when you've got animal characters and LGBT stuff you know Tumblr is going to be hiding in the bushes nearby.

I guess I’ll be the first person to memtion the obvious Deltarune. I’m surprised nobody’s brought it up yet.

I never understood the hype for Undertale, but that game came out when I was in high-school and all my 'friends' (kids I was in music classes with) spoiled me half to death for it. As such, Deltarune has kinda just flown under my radar.

I've heard it's just more of the same from UT anyway.

The fuck is undertale

I don’t think that bait in-and-of itself is a bad thing, exactly. It can be a good tool for getting your product to an audience, and for the consumer to know who’s the target audience in the first place. It just becomes an issue when the product is bad.
Like, I’d say something like Bojack Horseman is Reddit Bait, but I liked it. Rick and Morty was also Reddit Bait, but I didn’t like the third season as much as the first two.
Hatred was Edgy Sped Bait, and it was shit. But, so was Hotline Miami and those games are great fun. Execution is still very important.
Why Tumblr bait seems to be more annoying is because it tends to present itself as W O K E and all that. It can become holier-than-thou, and still be a bad product at the end of it. It can get grating.
