Games That Should Be Played "The right way" - Real or imagined

Those restrictions never existed, you're just retarded.
I think you missed the point of the thread. Of course those are retarded. As SSJ Ness said
Nobody should have shit to say to anybody about how to "really" play a game usually. I try to play games on normal but if I'm going to have more fun on easy then that's what I'm gonna do, even though a lot of people criticize playing that way.
I even mention it in the OP. I don't care for Dark Souls, but fans often get mad at me for it because I "didn't play it right". If someone mentions beating Ornstein and Smouge by spamming magic, they'll get mad at them for "playing it wrong" because what they consider the best boss in the game can be beaten by walking backwards and spamming ranged attacks.

What I'm interested in is what others have come across, and what games actually benefit from playing a specific way.

I don't care that other people think it's cheating, some games are literally designed to cheat you so cheating back is fine, and other times they're just poorly designed, etc so I'm justified in using them. But where I draw a line is tough, otherwise I just end up brute forcing everything and ruining the fun.
Going back to Xcom again, I play those games on easy and medium, but that's because I don't like doing the boring, but effective strategies, such as exploiting the ai into running into overwatch fire repeatedly. Also higher difficulties do some dumb things like weighing the RNG against you, or giving your soldiers a health penalty.

I also play JRPGs on easy if it's an option, because I don't like grinding. I technically spend most of the game under level, but it all balances out as by the time my low level becomes a problem I'm leveling up every other fight.

One game that comes to mind is Deus Ex. It's a good game. But it's very specific in the way you play it. You mostly need stealth because the gunplay is terrible. You can get to points in the game and screw yourself over by neglecting a certain skill or lack an item. Like if you need to hack a control panel but can't. You are basically screwed. This can seen in the opening level of the game.

I like to play coop games like Vermintide 2 and I find people who autistically adhere to metas and expect me to do the same really annoying.

I've had games where a player has tried to vote kick me for not using the perks and weapons considered meta, only to end up carrying that player because his meta build couldn't make up for his lack of actual skill.

This isn't just Vermintide 2 but a lot of games. R6 Siege comes to mind for a versus example, teammates will get upset if you don't use specific operators with specific weapons. You can pick all the meta shit but you might just get headshotted by a player with better map awareness who gets the drop on you.

Was at a friend's house playing fighting games when one of his friends come over and we all play. Then I get matched against the other dude, and after throwing him a few times he tries to tell me "throwing is off limits."

The fuck it is, if you're that close and not attacking, I'm throwing.

That is a really bad and autistic way for you to play Dark Souls, the fun of the game is the replay value with different builds and the knowledge of different pathways, challenges and items that you can partake in the game, I finished Dark Souls like 8 times each with a different build and a different type of weapon, dex, str, faith, pyro, magic, spear, dagger, sword, giant club and it all works and they are all pretty fun.

As for answering you question, I would put FF8 in the list, sort of, since FF8 is the kind of game where the fun lies, in my opinion, on how many ways you can exploit it with Triple Triad cards. Not for everybody since you can get so overpowered that you could beat the final boss by just grinding on disk 1 and steamrolling everything else.

Who the fuck cares what others think? Play the game in whatever way you enjoy it best
Based, but FTL and into the breach have very specific ways to be played until you are "experienced".
FTL you always have to pick cloak module or you'll be raped on sector 3 above, flagship is a death sentence if you don't know what you are doing.
into the breach is you making your mechs tank many hits and focusing on the flying shits, always, until you get a good combo of pilots and mechs.
and what's the catch here? both games are made by the same developers with the same cheap faggot shit of "punishing the player" if he fails a roll and didn't exploit the AI, some devs are one trick ponies just like the previous example i gave you and fromsoft like in op's message.

i'd like to add evochron mercenary though, if you play it singleplayer then you'll get fucked many times if you try to combat even WITH ai companions after you wasted days space trucking like a moron and even if you know how to cheat in that game because of the predictable kill triggers.

It always annoys me when people say they played Dragon Warrior or Myst with a walkthru. Especially if the person who says that goes on to criticize the games afterwards. I'm like "of course it sucked for you. You subtracted the most fun part of the experience."

Also Puyo Puyo Tetris should not be played with a steering wheel.

I see your points. When the dev imposes a playstyle so linear that there isn't room to enjoy the game in your own way, I can see why that would be a problem. But what OP was mostly referring to was the autists who want to impose how to play their favorite game. There's nothing stopping a player from not doing those things the dev did not intend. You just likely won't have a good time.

I guess it's the illusion of choice, and it really matters how much choice you need depending on said particular game.

having variance means turboautists demanding choice as rule, the games i listed have both but it's limited on the first part where the dev enforce more luck as a factor rather than your own choices and builds until you get to the final boss, then it's you fighting a three stage of specific sets tailroed by devs that will toss your choices into the air like in FTL or being missiled 9 times in evochron.
it's not like haydee/haydee2 where it's linear and you are meant to trial and error it by not expecting a enemy/mine on a corner.

MOBAs, all of them. Especially DOTA 2.
I remember playing this game when it just came out, I didn't think much of it, was alright with friends. Recently I got reminded of it and decided to try it again. Probably the most miserable gaming experience I've had in my entire life. People will literally yell at you in a frenzy for not doing things "the right way", even though you are obviously fresh. And despite having all heroes unlocked from the start, I have only seen the same 10-15 every game. Doesn't help that DOTA requires you to have an encyclopedic backlog of macro knowledge, even to play at boiling shit pit low level. I really liked some character designs from that game and really tried to like it, but having to endure miserable screamy downies every game is not a good gaming experience.

LOL is similar, its only benefit is simpler macro and having a "Turn off chat" option. Smite genuinely looks like a cash-grab eyestrain made in Blender in two weeks.

I still think that MOBAs have potential - on a purely gameplay level sometimes it is even fun, but for some reason that genre attracts the most spastic of sweats. The only one I can stomach now is HOTS quickmatches, but even then - the game is basically on life support, because Blizzard haven't made anything good since WC3.

Also MMORPGs in general. RPGs are about living out a powerfantasy or experiencing a story, while MMORPGs are about grinding out the same raids with the META setup in order to get better gear to grind out the same raids even more efficiently. The fact that screen-vomit extensions are a "requirement" in eyes of a lot of WoW players tells me everything I have to know.

TF2 has people screeching at you for using a weapon that fits your playstyle because some greasy creature from youtube told them that it's BROKEN and OVERPOWERED. Motherfuckers invented the anti-meta that is somehow as annoying as metafagging.

Also the Souls community is retarded in every aspect, especially the challengebros and PVP players. The games are alright tho, I like the character building

well people using walkthroughs in general bug me. the is especially true with rpg like games. i guess im just bias because i have a brother that would do that with every game. he would look at walthroough or player's guide to find the exact quickest way to beat a quest and rush through it to the end while complaining that the game was uninteresting or boring. but of course the game is going to be boring if that is how you play it.
The right way to play a video game is to turn it off
honestly it has been a few years since i spent anymore than half an hour playing a video game and im legit coming to the conclusion that they are nothing but a childish waste of time. it's liek porn, once you give it up you do start to see it in a different light.

An absolute classic:
Some Touhou fans look down on others for playing on Easy Mode. Especially since Touhou is comparatively easy for its genre. The games themselves enforce this to an extent, since the Extra stage will not unlock on an Easy 1cc, and the sixth game/first Windows game "Embodiment of Scarlet Devil" (AKA, the one most newbies are going to be playing) does not allow you to progress to the final stage and get a good ending if you play on Easy.
