Damn I was pretty bummed when he went full vtuber. I actually did manage to show up in one of his videos by accident. Good times.

Damn i don't know if its just nostalgia but his old gmod vids where really good and probably the best trolling videos out there seems like every other famous troller back then makes me cringe when i watch them now but not zuthar he was actually entertaining. Plus some of his friends he had on where pretty funny too.

It's both funny and sad that it seems like a lot of the old GoronCity people ended up being drug addicts who crashed out.

His videos exposed me to the serious RP server phenomenon. Halo and Star Wars were hands down the most retarded, in that order too.

I've got some great stories from those servers. My roommate at the time has encyclopedic knowledge of Halo but zero understanding of Garry's Mod or RP servers so he would just watch with dumbstruck awe when some power mod loser would show up wearing 40k armor stapled to his Spartan armor.

The admins are the worst on this servers for some reason they get really large heads being admins on a server with like 30 people and will ban you for the smallest things. I swear back in the day those sorts of servers where actually alright and weren't so full of shitty rules and admins

Oh yeah it's usually a group of 10 or so neckbeards all hanging out in a discord coming up with lame scenarios with fixed outcomes to "arr-pee".

Finding simple and innocent ways to vex them is always more fun because they don't feel like they can straight up ban you.

Most servers had rules against the TTS "sometimes I dream about cheese" thing you can do in Gmod. The trick was to find an isolated room where you weren't in range of it appearing in local chat but they'd hear the sound file play. Always drove them apeshit.

No, that isn't true. Maybe it's harder by default somehow, but it's still pretty easy to pull off if you're good at it. It's one of the main features of the Newton Launcher too.

Anti-prop kill Plugins (ghosting props) has been around for almost a decade now, they just didn't become mainstream until 2016-17ish, now its the norm to have them, especially in DarkRP.

Gmod truly lost its way after 2016, its been on a consistent down-fall since then.

This is the same issue I have with FiveM and the reason I'll never play those servers. YouTubers will advertise their server with a fun interaction only for you to find out later that everything they did was organised/sanctioned and your actual experience will be mining rocks for 3 hours or carrying boxes and collecting rations. I'm also seeing a more and more common trend of FiveM servers implementing p2w as a way to escape this tedium.

I much prefer event driven RP servers, while not much is going on outside of events the organisation ensures everyone on the server is actually having fun doing them like a traditional tabletop RPG.

The owners of these servers want to have a passive money printer so they bloat their servers with automated systems, shitty minigames, purges or wars on rotation and it no longer becomes RP. DarkRP is basically just seeing how many systems you can abuse before a busybody reports you and you get banned with rarely any interaction.

Perfect example of this is Civil Networks SCP RP. When you first join your options for XP are collect scrap, fruitlessly attempt to escape from an army of sweaty kids or do tests which are your only real source of RP, however you can rarely do these because of the rotational breaches and other codes that disallow testing. So for however long it takes, run around pressing E on bins until you collect enough XP to do literally anything more interesting. My first ban on the server was when I was a senior researcher conducting a test I thought would be fun for the people involved only I was constantly interrupted by a female MTF Captain who was trying to shut down the test for very minor technicalities. I told her (in character) she was interrupting important research and that she was a "buffoon" who was "setting science back 100 years". Apparently this caused her to cry and I was banned shortly after.

Events can't be automated, they need to be run the same as a DM would run a campaign in tabletop and since there are multiple events everyday this requires intrinsically motivated jannies who can consistently think of fun scenarios for up to 60 players at a time. The only genre of RP on Gmod I still see doing this is StarWarsRP and it would be my personal recommendation.

I like serious RP servers that don’t have mics enabled. Sure, they’re less fun for a casual audience, but when you have gm’s and organized events they play a lot like a tabletop RPG. I even played on a zombie RP that had a very convoluted stats and skills menu for character creation that was difficult to learn, but added more depth to character actions in the interactive events besides just /roll-ing for an action to be a success or a fail.

They’re quite niche since most servers enable microphones to attract casual RPers. I know Taco n Banana had some pretty good text-only RP servers, but they can be pretty pozzed. My best RP experience was a TnB post-HL2 RP server, though.
