Anyone play gmod tower back in the day, everytime I see this image it bring backs good memories

Wish I knew about this when all those trihard maps and games that I used to play that got taken down by Gmod for having trihard music and being based on real life shootings.
(Sorry for being alarm clock here) Was this made by the same person or people who made grozny_siege and Derry city during the troubles? I loved a lot of those maps and miss them.

A good chunk of my playtime on GMod probably comes from GMod Tower. I played it religiously, I absolutely loved it.

To this day I haven't touched Tower Unite. Maybe it's a fine successor to GMod Tower, but it'll never quite carry the same charm and I've heard PixelTail Games hasn't been kind to people attempting to revive it in spite of Tower Unite (never mind their tedious and unpatched 10th anniversary reunion server that nobody plays).

RIP the best GMod gamemode ever made.

Somebody here has bare essentials collection ? Workshop collection search is not really helpfull and man it will take ages to get all the shit that looks cool so having basics would be cool (like pm loader/selector and other helpfull tools).

There was a community server that was quite populated that I played on in 2023 but that died off quite quickly sadly, I kinda see the shutdown of the original gmod tower as the end of good gmod servers like you look at the server browser now and its full of dogshit RP servers and bunch of weird russian servers nothing like the variety of what you could play on before.

>tfw roblox has more variety than the gmod multiplayer catalog despite the current state of roblox games being dogshit.
I miss the fretta days of gmod

if you could find the right server with the right people gmod was some of the most fun you could ever have with a computer. played zs nonstop for like five straight years (until every server decided to mod the base gamemode into some grotesque abomination), lots of good memories. hated darkrp and the people that played it. ttt was a tossup between "almost ok server" and "you must read this phonebook of rules or everything you do is rdm and you will eat a three week ban respect mah authoritah". raft wars was good too as long as it wasn't p2w. the joy of spending 20 minutes downloading 30GB of miku models only to be barraged with ERRORs and missing textures anyways.
also garry is a faggot and i hope s&box flops

Maybe this was brought up in the thread but I need to ask. I was reading about TF2C and the Gold Rush mod there and I was thinking, what's the best way to play classic Garry's Mod? Is it possible to find an earlier version of the game plus a collection of mods appropriate for the time?

gmod classic runs as a sourcemod natively through steam using source 2007 base, limited to pre-toybox gmod 12. it would be probably an alright option for messing with ancient addons made before the middle of 2010, someone is hosting an archive of garrysmods.org.
for latest gmod 12 there is a saar patch which has toybox local redirect but idk if it still works, you may find some guides about it on youtube.
also the workshop has a lot of addons that restore stuff from old gmod for the vibes or something, made by kids who watched a lot of arg videos when it was popular.

They have Sunshine Tower currently running, an archive of the original Gmod Tower. I've been enjoying it.

While I haven't found any information of them being connected to Sunshine Tower besides usage of TCF (The Community First, dead GMod Tower revival that ST is a spin-off of) code, I'm sorry to tell you that GMod Tower's revival scene has been infected.
Zesty is talking about a former developer for TF2C called Kat. Before he worked on the GMod Tower private server The Community First, until he was ran out for preying on children. He is a self admitted pedophile:

Check out the google doc
Commits made by Kat to the TCF source
He got into TF2C because he was edating lead developer sniffy194, who runs the steam group for the Nailgun World discord mentioned in the google doc. Sniffy would refer to Kat as his spouse in developer voice chats. Yes he really married a pedophile. When people caught on Kat got forced out of the team but Sniffy's still there.

In the 2020s, you are not allowed anything nice without vile faggots devouring it after you take the first bite.

For those of you that don't already know, Garry has had a Source 2 "spiritual successor" in development for the last couple years called s&box. Last year in July a public playtest was opened for the game, then in November the Steam page was released alongside a new update... and the greater intentions of s&box became known.

A cosmetic store was opened and with it Steam Inventory / Community Market integration (one of the first, the Hard Hat was taken off-sale on November 13 and is hovering over $1,000 on the market). In December the first "limited" items were put on sale, the Santa 2024 outfit (set is currently valued at over $170 on the market). In January, Garry announces plans to make games created off s&box exportable and distributable on game platforms as well as a monetization system to let "creators" earn money based on the amount of players playing your game and a Workshop to publish your own community-created cosmetic items just like their other moneymaker Rust.

One of my big regrets with Garry's Mod is that we didn't let creators monetize.
In February, Garry details the new "Play Fund" system where he hopes to have their cosmetic sales fund these games, for now using GMod's revenue "because to me it's an evolution of Garry's Mod." Shortly after, the second limited item set Valentines Bear outfit is put on-sale priced at nearly $10 USD.

Fast forward to October, the game is still not officially released and the latest limited item set Killer Pumpkin outfit nearly doubled at $20; with a separate Skull Helmet at $15 and a shitty community Propane Helmet at $10 that is netting Facepunch more backlash than ever.

There are people that like to laugh and point out that we shouldn't be selling cosmetics for a game that isn't released. The thing about that is that monetization is part of making a game. We need to test it and we need to make sure it works. In an ideal world games would be funded with sweet dreams and warm hearts, but that's not the world we live in. We want s&box and its engine to be a feasible, self sustaining system that we can develop and evolve for years to come, and that really only works if it can wash its own face.

Following this with the latest 25.11.05 update, Garry seethes over people complaining about his business practice:

The people who act like we're fucking them with FOMO have never truly been fucked. We're not doing loot boxes. We're not doing shit where you get a crate and have to buy a $10 key. We're creating a viable long term economy where rare, hard to come by items are worth more.

This is how economies work. If gold fell from the sky it would be worthless. There has to be scarcity to create value. There has to be value to encourage purchases.

I want to create an economy where the people that have played for 5 years have an inventory worth more than they paid for it. I don't see anything wrong with that system. I see only winners.
Adding on to this:

Market prices should always be higher than the purchase price. If not immediately, then they should be after a year or so. This is what we should expect, this is what we should encourage. This isn't a bad thing at all. This is a healthy economy.

TL;DR: Garry literally wants to make the next ROBLOX, and not only that but the next evolution of it with exportable games you can sell separately on game platforms with a 10 year outlook. This all the while he's monetizing a game that has yet to be released which is quickly getting worse.

The playfund has been running since February this year and we've paid out over $180,000 directly to the community. We hope to put a couple of extra decimals on the end of that number over the next 10 years.

On the one hand, I'm kinda intrigued. But on the other hand, he wants to make ROBLOX 2.0 and I shouldn't have to explain to you why that's a terrifying idea (s&box dickriders will tell you it's not ROBLOX despite how obvious Garry's intentions are, and that it's not GMod 2 as well despite the continuous marketing usage of "GMod spiritual successor" to attract it's players).

I hope valve drops the full source 2 sdk with HLX so we aren't stuck with the frankensteined stinkditch C# laggy unity wannabe abomination of source 2 that garry mutilated Gaben's perfection into. Then JBMod 2 can be made and all will be right in the world

I get the complaints on paper regarding S&box's fomo cosmetics but on the other hand I've been buying the limited sets in large quantities and reselling them over the months to buy better vidya with, so I don't really mind. Keeping a decent stockpile too just in case S&box somehow becomes great, rocketing the value and I can buy even more vidya
