Gears of War - More like TEARS OF WAR

I didn't see a prior thread up for the series, and seeing as how Coalition were gutted and even decided to ignore the new story started in 4/5 and just decided to go back to when the Locust invaded is a big deal.

So whats the kiwi verdict? Surely, its gonna be 4+5 are too woke and the new story sucks but Gears of War even the good ones never really seem to get much fanfare here or on image boards compared to Halo. Its either people accuse it of being a cancer cover shooter, its too dudebro/mexican, or the multiplayer is too sweaty.

See while Gears 4/5s story was bad story and setting wise (tldr they didnt need to exist they should have done E Day/Pendulum prequels earlier) the Coalition themselves are basically not as bad as 343 since

>They didn't gut the gameplay of Gears (Ill get to this since its good but at the same time not so much)

>Their developers are competent when it comes to working on the Unreal Engine Gears 4 and 5 for all their faults run extremely well on PC

I think the issue as to why Gears of War never really gets mass appeal is the Gnasher/wall bounce meta being so oppressive in multiplayer. Even games that had buffed the lancers/ranged options to be more viable are debatable as at the end of the day the gnasher meta will always be the go to. Its a double edged sword since it filters casuals but if you do anything to fix it youll lose your core audience. I think what E Day needs to do is try something that CHANGES Gears of War or at least make another mode for casuals to have fun in.

If you ever looked into the development for Gears of War 1 they had originally planned for it to be more like Unreal Tournament in that the multiplayer was meant to be bigger, and have vehicles I personally think since E Day is focused on the first days of the all out war between humans and the locust they should try this idea make it like battlefield where each side has classes and vehicles to pick from. However, you can also keep the small 5v5 gnasher fests for the mexicans who will foam at the mouth if they touch it.

Thoughts?

Gears of War? more like Tears of War.

The fact that they're going back to calling it "Gears of War" is a good sign, in my opinion. If the trailer isn't just a fakeout meant to generate hype, then I also take the contents of that trailer as an indication that they're going back to why people actually liked Gears of War in the first place. Sure, it had some dudebro jokes, but overall the story was dark and bleak.
Another detail I did notice is Marcus and Dom are much less beefy, with normal human proportions, which does line up with Dom's flashback level in GoW3 in the Pendulum Wars showing how the Gears being the lunked out dudebros we know and love was something done in response to the Locust War, and evidently done later on.

I hope I'm not reading too much into it...but if they're going that far to keep continuity, I'm gonna remain cautiously optimistic, just like I was with the Dead Space remake.

It’s a good sign that they’re attempting to go back to what gears of war was, but in modern day gaming it’s hard to trust. When was the last time a true dudebro shooter was released? Gears of war is too masculine for the soys and women working on most games now. Hopefully it’s good because the GOW trilogy is absolutely fucking awesome, but I really don’t have much hope.

They better make it gory and more dark given that it was E-Day, the day the Locust emerged and murderfucked 25% of the human population.

Damn right they'd better. Gears of War: Judgement came out in 2013, and while it wasn't as good as the original 3, it was still a REAL Gears of War game. NuGears doesn't really deserve to be counted as such, and given the initial hype I'm seeing in the comments, Coalition has a golden opportunity to wipe the shame of NuGears away and bring the real Gears of War franchise back from the dead.

This is also a rare example where I'll say "modern technology" might actually enhance the experience. Again, the last real entry in the series was in 2013, at the tail end of the Xbox 360's lifespan. In 2024, with the improvements we've made since then, I hope we can have large scale battles as a part of the gameplay.
Don't just show us smaller, (COG) squad vs. (Locust) platoon battles like in the previous games, show us the Locust Horde in all its horror. I wanna be able to fight alongside dozens, even hundreds of Gears that are fighting outnumbered against the Locust. Show the COG's armored units and air power being overwhelmed by the shit the Locust brought up to the surface.

In short, I want to see the apocalyptic beginning to the Locust War fully depicted as we're told about in the games.

I'd be fine with no multiplayer if it meant 100% focus on reestablishing Marcus and Dom as the duo we've grown to love over the years.

I'm one of the few that liked Judgment's story. Being tried by your own coalition as soldiers trying to do right for the people you're trying to protect.

Agreed. I've been saying for a very long time that multiplayer in games nowadays isn't worth it, and given how singleplayer only titles have started to make a comeback, I hope the Coalition's learned that people are sick of multiplayer and it's okay to ditch it for at least one game.

I never thought Judgement's story was that bad, to be honest. Solid 7.5/10* game overall. Not as good as its predecessors, but that doesn't mean it's a bad game when we're comparing it to one of the defining game franchises of the Xbox console brand.

*Mind you, when I give a <x>/10 score, a 5 is a "meh, this is average", like how it should be. Not the Gameinformer/IGN standard where 7/10 is what every mediocre-ass yearly Call of Duty reskin gets.

Judgment highlights HOW dangerous the Locust were towards the COG and humanity. Hell, the tribunal during the plot took place DURING a Locust invasion. E-Day needs to look at Gears 1 and Judgment for plot inspiration, while using 2 & 3 for set pieces and enemy variety.

I was bored of Gears 4. Fighting robots doesn't have the same impact as fighting alien grubs. I think that's when they started adding Marvel-esque quips into the dialogue. I did not even bother with Gears 5's story.

Gears of War is pretty popular in Mexico. Why? Because of marketing and their superior Latin dub. Proof: play any Gears of War game and pay attention to their profiles. Chances are it'll say Mexico.
First time I'm hearing of thi-
>gorey and flashy ways of executing enemies
>focused on brotherly bonds
>super macho

oh shit

At least keep horde.
I don't like Horde. You'd need a decent team to outlast endless enemies in one spot. Where is the fun in that? That sounds repetitive.

No multiplayer is dumb what are you guys on about?
So you'd rather have bulking Gears/Locust monsters do emotes and wall bounce with imbalanced weapons? Okay.

Enjoy your $70 single player only game, I offered a suggestion to them changing multiplayer but I know the gnashers always make losers online cry about it but never to the point they just say "make the game with no multiplayer"

What is with these forums and image boards getting scared over multiplayer these days? These places went from some of the most hardcore gamers to barely playing them nowadays and just rather crying.

Back when game magazines were still a thing, this headline said it all about gears of war 1:

“Brain-dead dialogue and a mindless plot can’t keep an instant classic down.”

So stupid but so much fun.
