For those that don’t know what I’m talking about:

gematria

Also found in: Wikipedia.
Related to gematria:
numerology

A numerological system used in kabbalah and otherforms of Jewish mysticism that assigns numericalvalues to words based on the fixed numericalvalues of their letters.

If you’re interested, you can check out your Gematria number on either of these two sites:

Also as a bonus, someone used the Gematria calculator to (supposedly) predict Kobe Bryant’s recent death.

If we doin bullshit magic stuff, I don't wanna do magic by numbers crap. Its low effort. Half the point of magic is doing exhaustive study into things that are pretty much useless, so you can look cool and have nerdy autistic fun. Hit me up after yall become fluent in Enochian.

That's fake shit. You wanna do real magic you need this:

...after he died. I don't think "predict" covers that meaning. Similar to how Equidistant Letter Sequence (ELS) "Bible codes" can rather easily be found after the fact for all sorts of things (because any corpus of text of sufficient length has them by coincidence) but have no predictive value.

Some Gematria show cute equivalences and such but it's no more inspired than "Bible" standing for "basic instruction before leaving earth," it's just that, a cute didactic tool. Going beyond that is "profane babbling" as St. Paul put it.

You paged me. Wus thup?

------------------------------
Gematria is NOT numerology; it's simply an alphanumeric code. Numerologists can use gematria, but they can also use your height, weight, area code, zip code, etc.

Gematria is the way ancient people wrote mathematics at a time before there was any math notation (+ — × ÷) or special characters that represent numbers (1, 2, 3 etc.), so words indicated the type of calculation to be done and each of the 22 letters of the Paleo-hebrew alphabet represented a number. Biblical gematria is quite beautiful and sophisticated, but it was also highly secret since it was part of the knowledge of the Merkabah.

The letter values of biblical gematria are very similar to Standard gematria except the shin is 3 and the tav is 4. Because no calculator was coded to use biblical gematria, I learned Python and coded my own last year: Shematria. It is free to use and no registration is required. The site includes many examples of gematria from the bible as well as links to papers and books on the subject. It also includes a Book Search which displays Hebrew/English & Hebrew/Greek verses of the bible pre-calculated with biblical gematria.

Working out Biblical gematria is halfway between solving a cryptic crossword puzzle clue and playing Suduko. It can't predict anything and has nothing to do with Kobe Bryant or sport. Most people imagine its about finding words with matching values (its not). Its simply a bunch of ancient dudes who liked to find beautiful numbers to praise God with and impress each other with their arithmetic. You have to remember this was a time when the nights were long and there was no TV or internet.

These are photographs of wizards. These cats are wizards. These cats know how to use magic, bite and scratch with their claws etc. It's scary. That's a scary thing.

I was going to say it would have been helpful to tip Kobe off if you knew ahead of time...
