EDIT: This is getting very real. There is a serious problem with how mentally ill people are cared for in the US, and there's no easy solution. It's a common problem for a high-functioning person with mental illness to refuse to listen to their doctors or accept their treatment, and if they're legally adults there's nothing anyone can do until they either put themselves in danger or break the law.
