When I hit middle school circa 1989, I was a patriotic little bastard coming from the .mil school system, and the first time I got detention was for arguing manifest destiny/Mexico with my social studies teacher.

That shit wouldn't have happened prior; the change in politics between systems was stark, and I struggled quite a bit trying to keep my mouth shut most of the time.

As a late stage millennial who went to school in Commiefornia we were taught all sorts of wonderful things! In English we were forced to watch a movie about the poor wholesome Commies that McCarthy went after, we were taught that racism was invented by the Spanish and the Poetugese to keep their poor and the slaves from rising up in a wholesome socialist rebellion agaisnt the rich, and we had to read Othello with the lessons almost exclusively being about how race mixing was the best thing you can do. Aside from that it was just your standard shit lib curriculum, reading about some of y'alls positive experiences in the schools of old inspired me to share just a few of the many horror stories I witnessed.

We got to watch movies too but it was always followed by a lesson on what inspired the movie and actually happened.

We got to watch movies too but it was always followed by a lesson on what inspired the movie and actually happened.

Back when we watched movies, it was on the old Kodak 8mm projector; kids were mostly more interested in who got to run the thing (after 5th grade), but when teach wheeled it out on the stand, it was always a treat. It took long enough to set up & tear down, there wasn't enough time for a lesson afterwards.

The safety videos were always the best though. I always got a kick from the over-the-top acting, especially when the blood special effects was overdone.

I got to shoot the last year my school ('94) still had .22s & we used the JROTC indoor shooting range; it couldn't have been filmed any later than '79.

One of the scenarios was a some punky hoodlum highschool kids hanging around on their stadium bleachers, and one brought out his mom's little Saturday night special. Predictably it "just went off", missed everyone standing there (plot twist!), but then somehow flew past the stadium box and punched through a pickup truck windshield on the other side, hitting the driver & causing a collision.

The hole looked like it'd been made with a screwdriver, and then the driver Wilhelm screamed, and on the interior cut he was swimming in fake blood instantly. A hyperdramatic bystander then made a huge scene (for years I thought it was Liza Minnelli, she had the same carp eyed face), pointing out the driver had been shot(!), and instantly pointing out the teens probably over 200m away (with a bunch of trees in the way as well). That wasn't even all of it, they continued with the courtroom drama & it got really terrible good, and of course ALL 6-7 of the kids got 20-to-Life.

Cringe as it was; even I could tell those poor saps trying to break into acting were giving it all they had, even though it was a 30min safety spot.

In my last year of HS I took a class that was called fantasy and literature and all we did was watch movies. was basically a way for the english teacher who was a super nerd (the type to commision portraits of his D&D characters from actual comic artists) to get to watch Xena warrior princess all day.

A less fun person may call that a fucking waste of time, but that sounds a whole lot more useful than a lot of the socialist bullshit being taught these days. If you were supposed to then reflect on the films and then analyze them, you probably actually learned something of value.

My nieces and nephews are utter retards so I can only assume what's being taught today is even worse than when I was in high school 17 years ago. They were bitching back then that public education sucks but I feel like I had an Ivy League one compared to kids today.
