Good for them!

I don't buy his excuse that the low pressure training ammo means you don't have to worry about barrel life. These things recoil a shitload with the 80k PSI ammo and you can't train to handle that without a lot of practice with it, it's like saving on money by using a 10/22 to train for shooting an AK, it isn't going to give you habit in handling the recoil characteristics.
Inevitably, they WILL have to train with the high pressure ammo a lot, which is hard to shoot, and high wearing.

It's like he's been fed some talking points by a Sig marketer and just uncritically regurgitates them.
I love that Sig doesn't care about the barrel life but does care about the case deflector to the point were they added a replaceable steel insert.

Remember that most things about that rifle are not necessarily a result of the manufacturer's ideas, but of all the requirements in our army's frankly retarded procurement system.

Isn't it a combo unit with a brass deflector and forward assist? I see those parts kits on their website. Makes me wonder if the FA is the reason, not the deflector. Did they buy into the fuddlore about them not being necessary, or is the military (or Sig themselves) considering abandoning it for some rifles they want to sell and they want every upper they make to be easily converted?

Barrel is supposed to last several thousands of rounds, receiver is supposed to outlive several barrels.
Aluminum would get chewed up by the stainless steel base in a few hundred rounds.

So Sagedynamics and Roscoe are releasing a barrel with a new gas length that they're calling patrol length. I guess it's supposed to be optimized for silencers on 12.5 barrels which apparently can have trouble with silencers. I don't know a whole a lot about silencers so I don't know if this is a real thing.

Who's the market for this? Most LEOs if not using a personal rifle are already issued a patrol carbine, and most enthusiasts who know what they're doing will go with a 10.5 inch if they're not already suppressing a 16 inch.

12.5 is one if the favorite barrel lengths of the instagram crowd. Long enough that they can put an lpvo on and call it 'mini-recce' and short enough that a full size can won't lengthen it to m16 territory with a k can only puts into 16" rifle territory. Supposedly there's problems with mid-length gas systems on 12.5s so this is probably trying to find a middle ground between that and carbine.

Ohhh. Right. I forgot about the recce fad with the social media commandos.

In all fairness, 12.5" is a comfortable carbine length, one you'd see on old CAR15s and what not.

It’s probably blowback. No need to remain locked if all the gas leaves the barrel after the bullet travels an inch.
On the bright side, that's probably the one short-barreled AR that doesn't flashbang you with every shot. Can't generate concussion if you don't have any gas pressure.

Also, its impossible for a squib load to cause a barrel obstruction and catastrophic failure. And any extremely hot round will probably just vent out the front of the barrel, I would figure. The downsides are that you have the accuracy of a musket due to the lack of contact with the rifling.

Rifling? What rifling?

I still wouldn't want to be anywhere near the line of fire of that thing, but I doubt you'd be able to hit anything 30 yards out except by sheer luck.
