I'd argue it makes sense for a wilderness gun. Low magnification for 4 legged threats (and occasional 2 legged threats at friction points like the trailhead and campsite), high magnification for potential game and local yokels plinking at you from a distance.I vividly remember every hype beast and hanger on shitting on magnifiers hardcore around the early LPVO phase of gear tube. I do believe they are the best combo for average defensive use. Unless you have a bad eye condition and need a etched reticle in which case a LPVO would be better.
A big thing during the LPVO phase was also "gotta ID your target bro. You don't wanna get locked up" this idea that you're going to be shooting at people 200+ yards away and there would still be some sort of legal system? If you're shooting at someone 200+ yards away it's either a full societal collapse or you're going to jail. There is no in between nuance there. That's a whole other topic, how many of these guys think they can get away with shooting someone under the guise of self defense in really sketchy circumstances. This guy is a good example of that
