Oh God, is it time for The Conversation again?
this ""debate"" never really goes away. it dies down, and then people who think they know more than they actually do bring it back up again, then it dies down and the cycle continues.
I'm pretty sure the skill of people who argue for/against the forward assist on an AR could be mapped on a bell curve.

And it's one of those bell curves where the extreme ends agree with each other.

Listen here you weak so-called "men". The AR-15 is a glorified varmit gun! Dang it, it's chambered in .22lr! That's the bullet I use to shoot my neighbor's cats! My poker buddies down at the American Legion knew GIs that would unload two magazines into gooks and they'd stand back up, smile, and shoot back with their rusty, mud covered AK-47s. Come on, America! Communism made a better gun then we could! For Pete's sake, the AR-15 is made from aluminum, the same thing my Miller High Life cans are made from! What ever happened to using steel? I tell you what, we didn't need no forward assist with the M-14 or M-1 Garand. Not like you sissies could even hit the forward assist hard enough to chamber a round. Maybe if you hammered it with your participation trophy you got for playing soccer you could get one of your little sissy .223mm rounds chambered. All right, I need to calm down since the VA won't prescribe me the right meds for my heart condition.

GOD BLESS AMERICA

The service time for the army is way too long, it needs to be like 8 months all those guys have really short service and with a medical discharge- and you forgot to post his job code and have it come back as water purification technician or something 7/10 boomer post.

I don't think the FA is necessary but I don't really care if it's there.
I think it says a lot that there are really not that many AR-style uppers that don't have it, and approximately zero of them in military/LE use (though apparently, some versions of the XM7 have been without it).

Is it really that useful? Nah. Does it have a function in very rare circumstances? Yeah. Does it really hurt to have it in the gun? Nah. Is it really that much of an expense to have it? Nah.

I mean big military manufacturers that are introducing AR rifles, that have no need for civilian market compatibility, are introducing their rifles with a FA. SAKO with their rifles for Finland and Sweden, Beretta with their NARP etc.

It's most undeesung feature is silent bolt closing/making sure it didn't get pulled open.

I still contend there's plenty of situations where you need to shoot right fucking now and will deal with the case later/a bolt action rifle is fine.

"If I had an M&P 15, I'd want a forward assist on it too"
What's this even supposed to mean? Does the M&P 15 come with low quality springs in the bolt? Is the buffer spring weak? Super tight chamber? I know they're cheap rifles, but I've seen people shoot the piss out of them without any real issues. I always assumed Rittenhouse's malfunction was caused by his rifle probably being bone dry.

I think it's just 'muh basic bitch AR'.

If your AR-15 costs less than $5k then you might as well get a poverty pony. I would challenge anyone who disagrees with me to a shootout but I wouldn't want to embarrass you when your PSA Shit-15 jams when you chamber a round and if it's too cloudy your chink Holosun optic won't work.

Didn't Ian eventually (and begrudingly) come around on the subject of FAs, something like "I personally don't like it, but if you got one you might as well use it"?

Or maybe I'm thinking about birdshead Mossbergs?
