The last-gasp milsurp boom of the early '00s would've come a lot earlier had the 90's never happened, and that only lasted simply because so many Mausers & Mosins were made; but the supply was always finite.

For those playing the home game and trying to do math in their heads, the inflation rate between 2002 and 2021 is just about 50%.

Video games helped. I remember young Cowadoody players buying up Mosin Nagants, Nagant Revolvers, Tokarevs in the late 2000s because of video games.

That little detail accounted for a lot of salt & sandy pussy in boomer/"old guard" collectors. They jealously gatekept against younger guys, and responded to inquires for information or data with contempt; I even saw gunshow vendors only pull out the good stuff whenever guys as crusty as they were came along.

I've even heard much of their bitching echoed here; like bemoaning the lack of legwork it took to learn, along with gamers/young guys not having proper respect for the serious business of gun collecting, etc. But mostly I encountered/overheard a lot of hostility because their monopoly (especially on supply) was vanishing.

It was especially bad coming from Mauser spergs, who couldn't stand seeing rare waffenamts end up in the hands of gamers/movie fans, a fate worse than being rehomed with Bubba (because at least Bubba is ignorant).

I'll be the first to say that it's good to have some gatekeeping, you'll want some standards in your hobby community, people shouldn't come waltzing in and expect to be taken seriously if they lack in interest and competence, or they have a hidden political agenda (you know the kind of faggot who comes in and demands identity politics bullshit), but at the same time I think it's the most bitter grognard bullshit to turn away people with genuine interest who are looking to learn and be a part of your hobby.

You know what happens to your hobby if you all put your effort into turning away anyone who's new, no matter what? Eventually the hobby will die, and when YOU die, all of your collection or your work will most likely fade away and be lost, and if you were truly serious about the history and your passion for guns, that should horrify you to your core.
New blood is absolutely vital, you should hold some standards, but you should be able to tell which people have what it takes or are willing to learn.

Great message. Unfortunately very few people are willing to take a nuanced view to things. Everybody wants to hammer an one-size-fits-all solution to everything. I'm glad the guys at the range I went to back when I got my very first gun were eager to show me the ropes. Times were a little different back then, I guess. I wouldn't have given up on the hobby if they had pushed me away, but it would have made things considerably more difficult for young Corn Flakes.

Ian is also clearly better informed on these things, and if you look at how he phrases things and how his expression sours when he's addressing certain issues, it's pretty clear he has fairly right-of-center opinons on guns. He just doesn't screech about them because he's got a lot more to lose, and his channel going away would mean a lot of content would be lost. He was very factual when talking about what he did to his pistol braces (or was it bump stocks? It's been a while): he got rid of them because he didn't want them to be a possible liability. Being publicly as neutral as possible is just about the best way he can actually keep his channel with Youtube being what it is. Just look at how he had to phrase things in his recent video about 3D printed Roth Steyr 1907 stripper clips.

Socially, Ian seems to be one of these "live-and-let-live", small-L libertarian guys, which is good for him because it means he doesn't make a lot of enemies with bullshit social media hot takes (lookin' at you, Karl!). I don't think he would have been friends with a nutball like Karl for any length of time otherwise. His interest in off-grid living (it was a bigger thing before ForgottenWeapons) is also not very "progressive" either.

Karl is ultimately the perfect example of the 'liberal gun owner' that he wants to bring more of into the community. He might give some lip service about not liking cops, unlike those dang dirty bootlicking boomers (but can't even muster up a substantial criticism about the new head glowie in chief being a disastrous candidate when it comes to it), but will stay pretty much silent about antigun politicians and legislation unless backed into a corner about it and is more concerned about whining about people not liking troons in the gun community or some such nonsense.
