Singer George Michael has died aged 53, his publicist has said.

The star, who launched his career with Wham! in the 1980s and later continued his success as a solo performer, is said to have "passed away peacefully at home".

Thames Valley Police said South Central Ambulance Service attended a property in Goring in Oxfordshire at 13:42 GMT.

Police say they were treating the death as unexplained but there were no suspicious circumstances.

In a statement, the star's publicist said: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period.

"The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage."

Michael, who was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in north London, sold more than 100m albums throughout a career spanning almost four decades

He first found fame with his schoolfriend Andrew Ridgeley in duo Wham! before going on to release solo albums, including the multi-million selling Faith and follow-up Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1.

It outsold Faith in the UK but led to Michael losing a court case with record label Sony over his frustration over how the album has been marketed.

He scored seven number one singles in the UK with songs including Careless Whisper and Faith, and won three Brit Awards and two Grammys.

But as his career faded, Michael faced headlines for the wrong reasons.

In October 2006 he pleaded guilty to driving while unfit through drugs and was banned from driving and in 2008 he was cautioned for possession of class A drugs, including crack cocaine.

In September 2010 Michael received an eight-week prison sentence following an incident the previous July in which he crashed his Range Rover into a shop in north London.

Earlier this month it was announced that producer and songwriter Naughty Boy was working with Michael on a new album.

A documentary film entitled Freedom was also due for release next March.

In 2011, Michael postponed a series of concerts after being taken to hospital for treatment for pneumonia.

After treatment in a Vienna hospital, he made a tearful appearance outside his London home and said it had been "touch and go" whether he lived.

Doctors were said to have performed a tracheotomy to keep his airways open and he was unconscious for some of his spell in hospital.

After years of refusing to be drawn on speculation about his sexuality, Michael disclosed he was gay in 1998 after being was arrested in a public toilet in Beverly Hills, California, for engaging in a lewd act.

Didn't he announce that he had AIDS, or was that just the Opiates talking to me again? Seem to remember hearing that, back in the day.

And how no one ever called him as gay until the Bathroom Escapade, I still can't figure that out.
Yup. The pneumonia is what technically killed him, but it was really because his immune system was weakened by the HIVvies shivvies.

The name "Wham!" for a band was so gay that it literally sucked my dick.

Hey I liked his Christmas music (Last Christmas and Band-Aid), but found everything else to be mediocre. Almost every song in the 80s had a killer sax solo anyway.

Of course this took away the light from Rick Parfitt, as Michael Jackson did to Farrah Fawcett and later Billy Mays, although not at such a huge magnitude.

Please tell me George Michael wasn't an HIV/AIDS denialist who refused to take medication. :( At that point, his death would go from not unusual to face-palmingly bad.

Apparently he was too scared to get an AIDS test after his partner died of it.

"George says he does not believe in tests .

"He says he finds the wait for results to harrowing and that he hasn't had a test since at least 2004 due to his fears it might be positive."

Well, that's....not smart.

This was in 2007 so he might have gotten tested by now, but still. If he was positive he wasted years not getting treatment.

Yes!!! I remember watching the Sex video and saying "Who the hell does he think he is fooling?"

Ahh thought so. The articles I read said the he died peacefully and no foul play. So no mention of HIV or AIDS at all.

The " family" is requesting an autopsy be performed on him. I wonder, is this common with at-home deaths?
If he ODed there might some good drugs hidden on the compound. If he has AIDS then they don't want the needles.

It's not like the guy was Prince or anything. He was a mediocre pop star marginally better than a one hit wonder whose main claim to fame after some time in the 80s was getting arrested constantly for public buggery.

I really liked Wham!
George Michael had a few good solo songs too. Can't say I'm all broken up about it though.

His cover of Papa Was A Rolling Stone is usually in my top twenty gay dance songs.

But yeah I don't get why people are flipping their shit like he was Prince or Bowie.

Somewhere in heaven, a public men's restroom will be occupied for the next few years.:pickle:
