German police launched multiple raids across the country Wednesday in the latest crackdown on hate speech posted on the Internet and spread in social networks.

Although the number of such postings recorded by the authorities declined by about 8% last year to 2,411, Germany’s federal crime office said that was “no reason to sound the all-clear” as many incidents are not reported.

“Hate and incitement on the Internet endanger our democracy and provide a breeding ground for extremist violence,” Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said in an emailed statement. “We must set clear limits here and force perpetrators out of their supposed anonymity.”

suddenly, sirens. the perpetrator hurriedly opens the window and scampers off into the night. a grizzled leutnant bursts into the room, screaming "POLIZEI!", but it is too late. eyes narrowing, he takes in the scene before him, ignoring the sound of the junior officer heaving into a bucket behind him. a breeze from the open window causes its curtains to gently undulate.

his hand tightens around his service weapon. it's going to be a long night.

You know, I used to say America sucks ass but seeing this type shit makes me happy I live here. Sure, social media censors the hell out of you and promotes misinfo but at least it doesn't lead to an arrest. I don't really use gamer words but I assume the end game to this is just being on a site with them on it will be reason enough for an arrest in the future. Null called this early and now it's happening to random nobodies as well.

Does anybody speak German? I have a hunch the law that allows this is intentionally vague and if it is, it will definitely be abused later on. I could google translate it, but the wording is really important and machine learning translators are terrible for that. Does it have a specific criteria for what is "hate speech"?

It’s not that surprising. Rather than address real problems, like Germans freezing in the winter or losing a war on two fronts, they’d rather deal with the “enemy within.” Just instead of Jews it’s people saying faggot or nigger.

He glances at the screen, still glowing with the hated word; when suddenly a ding! What's this? A small bell has appeared in the upper right; he clicks it, unable to look away. "What is a reaction?" he muses, and clicks again.

Little hearts appear below the post - drawing him in. There's a text box open - surely it wouldn't be that harmful to see what it's like; just once? His hand reaches toward the keyboard, finger over the well-worn key; without a conscious thought the word suddenly appears - his hand hits the mouse which slides into the "post reply" button - oh shit. Nobody will notice, right? It'll be fine. He reaches out to hit the power button and end the shame when suddenly he sees a new post appear underneath - he can barely look but an unseen power draws him to read - "stop doubleposting you absolute niggerfaggot".
