Germany floats return to conscription if volunteer plan fails

Germany will bring back conscription to boost its armed forces if a plan to use volunteers fails to deliver enough recruits, the country’s defence minister has said.

Boris Pistorius said he would begin with a voluntary model to attract young people, supporting the Bundeswehr’s goal of more than doubling its reserve forces in response to Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

But he said Berlin would not shy away from a return to full conscription if the armed forces had spare training capacity — and would include such a provision in a bill that will be presented to parliament after the summer break.

“My goal is that the law contains two regulations,” he told German broadcaster ARD, referring to a voluntary option and a compulsory one. The latter, he said, would have to be activated “if the numbers are not sufficient”.

The fallback option would avoid a whole new legislative process if the voluntary enlistment numbers fall short. “We don’t have time for that,” he said. “If we have a mechanism that is already in place, then it won’t be a problem.”

Germany’s chancellor Friedrich Merz has said that he wants his country to have the “strongest conventional army in Europe”, vowing to play a greater role in the continent’s defence.

Merz scrapped Germany’s strict government debt rules to allow unlimited borrowing for defence spending after his victory in February’s parliamentary elections. He aims to overhaul the country’s long-neglected armed forces in response to fears of Russian aggression.

With money no longer a problem, the biggest issue confronting military planners is personnel shortages. Senior defence officials say that the armed forces must expand to include about 80,000 more professional soldiers over the next 10 years to meet Germany’s Nato commitments.

The country also needs to increase its number of active reservists who can be called upon in times of crisis, with the figure rising from about 60,000 today to 200,000 by the end of the decade.

Germany, where young people were compelled until 2011 to either do military service or a civilian alternative, has lost contact with many former conscripts who could serve as reservists due to data protection issues.

Pistorius told ARD that the situation was a “scandal” because “it means that in an emergency, ie if we were attacked, we could not call up our reservists because we don’t have their names or addresses”.

He said Germany was working to rebuild its reserves, starting with asking young people turning 18 to complete a survey about their willingness to do voluntary military training and then continue the commitment by being a part of the reserves. The scheme is expected to initially accept 5,000 people a year.

Senior figures in Merz’s Christian Democrats have criticised the plan. They argue Germany needs compulsory enlistment immediately to confront the security challenges facing Europe.

But Pistorius has said the military does not yet have the barracks and manpower to train hundreds of thousands of young conscripts each year.

Instead, he has insisted on following a voluntary model inspired by a similar system in Sweden. Germany would simultaneously build up its training facilities, he said, and would return to conscription if there was spare capacity.

At the same time, Pistorius said, the Bundeswehr would strive to recruit more professional soldiers to increase the standing army from about 183,000 people to about 260,000 by 2035 as part of its Nato targets.

“We have to do that by improving attractiveness, pay and other things,” he said.

Fun Germany Armed Forces fact!

It is impossible to get a perfect score at the marksman training test of the German Army. Not because it is a particularly difficult test or anything, but because they have been using the same training rifles since the mid-1990s and by now they are all smoothbores with in-built RNG bullet spread that makes it impossible to aim!

Money printer go brrrrrr, very nice. Just take on unlimited debt from war preparations, guys, that's a time and tested strategy that always works out well for nations.
They'll just do as their forefathers did and find a way to offload the debt burden onto their neighbors. And with the EU in charge and Germany's control of its entire financial sector its even easier than ever, no conquest necessary. All they need to do is set up some sort of phony-baloney shell company that exists only to control and issue military-related debt so none of it appears on Germany's government balance sheets and then mandate that anyone who receives EU funding buy a proportionate amount of that debt.

Just pull a Fritzl and rape and lock any draft officers that come knocking in your basement.
Nah, I already served time with the clownshow that is the Bundeswehr. That was many, many years ago. The only way they can get me back to shovelling shit is through some reserve activation clause in case shit hits the fan, and even then I'm likely not seeing trenches. Working in logistics comes with its own perks, or so it would seem...

You can always grow a beard, get a real good tan and pretend you don't speak German I doubt they'd conscript any of the Turks or Syrians they've been importing.

They should make good use of the imports that they have let in back at 2015. Nah. Who am I kidding. This will only be applied to 'old' Germans and not the 'new' Germans.

So to any Krauts out there, review what happened in the Ukraine war. That is coming for you.

I mean, you're absolutely 100% correct and it is unfair.

On the other hand, though, it may transpire to be a good thing in the longer run. Hear me out - First of all because I don't trust a single one of Germany's latest resident ragheads with access to anything more dangerous than a paring knife - inbred shitskins tend to lack the discipline to be useful enlisted soldiers anyway, that's why their conventional militaries all have a long history of getting their shit pushed in every time they inevitably start another shitshow they can't finish. Muslims are great at spontaneous conflagrations of impulsive, indiscriminate acts of violence, like driving a van into a Christmas market or stabbing someone; not so much when it comes to the kind of surgically-targeted, organized violence you want your national military to be capable of. Secondly, because even when it's unjustly imposed on you by the state, military training is an asset - and one that there is no way for elites to ensure are used for the kind of purposes they intended it for. Groups of resentful but well-trained former conscripts have proven to be a very big problem for the regimes that initially forced them into said training, time and time again throughout history. Even performative, pseudo-military weapons training can make you a huge problem in large enough numbers: it's not the most recent example, obviously, but many of the enslaved gladiators who joined the rebellion behind Spartacus were either former (enemy soldiers), or had received training for the ancient Roman equivalent of WWE combat. Despite the disparity in their levels of training and former allegiances, it was enough to make them a serious threat under the right conditions and leadership.

I'm entirely against the draft on principle, but I guess what I'm saying is that taking vast swathes of their seething, angry, AfD-voting kraut population and making them even madder by forcing them into military training might not work out exactly the way Eurocrats like Merz have planned. Recall that this is the brain trust that imported millions of shitskins in the first place, on the assumption that they would be an easily-controlled lumpenproletariat to replace white wage-slaves. They're not exactly ones for foresight.

That reminds me. The people that have gained citizenship are eligible for the draft, too. So, Ahmed, 29, who just got his German papers will be on the frontline near Kharkov to take a part in the Fourth Battle for that city, before the MPs drag me away to do the inventory in some ammo dump (that might be blown up by Ivan's drones or some such).

How do you think that's going to go though? The less naturalized ones and hell even the naturalized ones will start decapitating whoever comes looking for conscripts.

Dunno. If the Feldjäger are still as based as they used to be when I served, they won't care how many bystanders Ahmed is going to kill to avoid the draft. They gonna find, detain and ship you to the barracks no matter what. The only other institution in this country that is equally thorough when they want something is the tax office.

I don't know. I don't envy whoever has to go forcefully recruit people into the military in muslim majority areas. That shit where three or four dudes mob one person and drag them off wouldn't fly. Those three or four military guys would get jumped by fifty or sixty angry muslims with axes, hammers, machetes and cricket bats. There would be mass, violent riots, but the German government's welcome to try.

Yeah, ten years ago I'd have laughed at that notion. I'm not so sure today. I mean, the government is so incompetent, they have somehow lost data on roughly a million reservists.

In a completely unsurprising 180 from their previous ‘we learnt from WWI and WWII, honest’ bullshit…

Germany has been fucked since it decided that taking over the DDR and gleefully bankrolling the entirety of Eastern Europe in the EU was a pet project. Absolute fucking retards.

It’ll be curious to see where the anti-EU/anti NATO stuff really starts. With everywhere in the EU painting such ideas as “racist” and “far right”, the governments of EU countries are more likely to make things worse in an attempt to keep their power than they are to actually change stuff for the better for their people. The majority of the last lot of European mass revolutions (in 1989) were mostly peaceful. Can’t see things being all candles and church meetings this time round, sadly.

Well, that and the fact that half of Europe’s population now isn’t European and doesn’t give a shit if it all caves in. They’ll just fuck off to the next easy mark, sorry, ‘country committed to freedom and human rights’, begging bowls and refugee claims in hand. But it’s Europeans that want their own countries to work for them that are bad, apparently.

National service is going to be brought back all over NATO countries, mark my words. The warmongers see profit in arms sales and manufacturing conflicts. Time to manufacture the idiots who support it too.

Germany does not have enough rifles to arm its active troops + reserve at the same time without dipping into ceremonial bolt actions. Sure, mr "we have to scale our air force deployment down", show us that conscription.
The average American gun owner fires more rounds per year at the range than the average Bundeswehr infantryman. Never forget that.

By the time they actually procure enough material to arm and equip a conscript army I will be too old to serve. So it's a problem for future generations.

I wonder if some people in Berlin are regretting pushing the whole no nation global citizen crap. Without a bit of naive patriotism people generally don't want to die for their country. And an unmotivated conscript army performs really badly usually.
