Hello, I'm drunk.
I am considering the prospects of getting my ears re-pierced after perhaps a decade. I don't have any earrings at the moment. I would appreciate any and all opinions on earrings. There is a piercing general thread, but I am aiming for opinions on ear piercing specifically. Do they contribute that much to an overall aesthetic? Is it worth the gunk, stinky studs, and maintenance of punching a hole in your flesh? Do we have earring haters or lovers in the chat? Tell me below!

I like to see a woman with nice studs or small rings. Giant, dangly shit is negress/feminist territory and looks awful.
Men should never get their ears pierced - that's strictly for faggots.

I love studs, but am also a big fan of goofy gimmick earrings for seasonal occasions like Christmas or Halloween. Dangly earrings can be tasteful, but as @Iron Jaguar said, some can fall into Negress/Feminist territory. If you want dangly earrings, stick to something simple.

Gauges, while I dont consider them piercings and more body modifications, are for faggots. Is there a personal aesthetic you're going for? A specific area of your ear you're trying to pierce or is it simple lobe piercings?

I really like earrings! I stopped wearing them for a decade or so when I had kids because the little buggers cannot help but grab them and pull, and that’s not fun, but now everyone has reached the age of (alleged) reason I am wearing them again.
I like smallish, yellow gold ones and ones with either pearl or a gem. Not a fan of huge earrings on me, they can look good on others, but I did have some waterfall crystal ones I wore to a gig the other week that were luscious. And lightweight.
Get any re piercing done with a needle at a proper place and only wear gold or steel until fully healed then go for it

Speaking as a man, I can appreciate it if it looks nice. But overall, I don't really care at all. I probably would not even notice for a while if someone did not have their ear pierced.
I think earrings are something I wear to feel nice for myself. I like how they feel.
OP if you are into big heavy earrings, you can buy little support plasters that go on the back of the lobe to stop the holes stretching out.

I believe that most men should not wear earrings.
It's not that earrings in and of themselves are inherently ugly or anything, but I've come to appreciate a spartan approach to bodily aesthetics.
I believe it's the people who don't have tattoos who are the cool guys nowadays.

Having said that, I have a male friend who have had a couple of piercings in his younger days that he has since removed, but have also shown interest in equipping himself with again. I'm talking about piercings on his tongue, on his eyebrows and, of course, on his earlobes. I suppose there's a difference with earrings on your earlobes and piercings on your earlobes, but he punched holes in them all the same. I believe he had both earrings and piercings in his earlobes back in the day, actually.

When I went with him to a piercings shop in the city we live in, I was very amazed and aghast at the places in which the magazines that lay on the tables showed that you can get pierced in. There were piercings that were installed rather "south of the body", so to speak, and I'm just flabbergasted that some people want these places pierced.

Having said that, in order to contribute properly to this thread I suppose I should recommend you some earrings, but I unfortunately know little of the subject. I do believe that small earrings are more pretty and aesthetic than large ones though.

Good luck with finding and equipping yourself with earrings that you enjoy.

I've never had my ears pierced and I'm pretty happy with that. I don't think I will get the pierced, though sometimes I think about getting those clear converters to be able to wear earrings.
You can get great clip ons these days.
. I have an antique pair of ones I think are Thai or Khmer or similar, they’re tiny silver bells, and they kind of screw onto the earlobe. I can’t wear them for long, they’re more a curiosity but they’re cute.
Have to say not a fan of earrings on men

I'm not either. I can't think of an instance where earrings made a man more attractive, just less. There's a really annoying trend where certain male characters are "headcanoned" with earrings, usually black studs, even though they don't have them in canon. Sometimes it becomes such a prevalent part of the fanon that it's hard to find fanart of them without earrings. I see the same with black nail polish now too.

I have two piercings in each ear and both were done with a piercing gun, I don't recommend that option! Apparently the gun is nearly impossible to fully sterilize and both times I had itching and burning after the piercing was gone. One of my hole sets gave me trouble for a long time and now I wear a small set of rings in them all the time to keep them open.

Way back when I was in elementary school, one of my friends had her ears pierced but they kept closing up I went with her to get them re-pierced at WALMART of all places and I still remember her crying in pain and blood running down her neck. I don't know what the FUCK the person with the gun was doing but it scared me out of getting piercings until I was in high school.

In contrast, I have my septum peirced and that barely hurt afterwards. That was done in a proper piercing/tattoo studio by a very clean and meticulous piercer. I also watched a friend get pierced in a proper studio and that was a very warm and welcoming environment.
So in conclusion don't go to Claire's or Walmart, but that's probably obvious. ;)

I have two lobe piercings in each ear. I also have a helix and a conch in one ear. I prefer the latter two to the former. I think lobe piercings are nice if you can wear some interesting earrings, not big, obnoxious ones. But my look is basically alternative (insofar as, I wear only those and not the lobes; I get that everyone has the same kind of piercings nowadays).

So, basically: do what makes you happy. But if you're never going to wear anything interesting, don't worry about getting them re-pierced for their own sake, because, why would you?

I’ve always liked earrings and first got my ears pierced at Claire’s way back when. Used to have a preference for hoops but I did get lazy and stop wearing them for years; learned that my holes close up fast the next time I tried to put some in. I got them re-pierced a couple years ago for my birthday and most of the time I wear sapphire studs. I also have some cute dangly pairs that I typically wear for parties and such - not the huge tacky kind though. They’re an eyesore and I can’t imagine they feel very pleasant anyway. I may get a second lobe piercing for each ear along with another kind in the future.

I do occasionally have trouble locating my holes when I’m swapping out a pair, which is a pain because I’ll just be blindly jabbing at my lobe until I eventually find them. I guess they’re just that small.

Re: gauges, I find them hideous and don’t see the appeal at all. I like earrings on men but not that shit.

If you like the overall aesthetic of earrings and plan to wear them regularly then yes, they’re worth it.

Im sad this is the general consensus because I think simple earrings look good on guys honestly, but most men wont bother because of the gay association. Another thing the fags have ruined for hetero women... *sigh*
Anyways I think its nice to get your ears pierced, it also becomes permanent after a point (it was a couple months for me) so you dont have to worry about closing. The little indent it leaves is barely noticable and its nice to have the option to wear them.

I have just one earring in each lobe. Regarding the gunk: my everyday pair of earrings are tiny stainless steel infinity hoops. They’re tricky to get on, but once they’re in place I just leave them for months at a time. They don’t really get gunky the way studs do. I just rotate them around and rinse them out every so often.

I got my ears pierced when I was ten, and then almost lost an ear because it turned out I have a nickel allergy. The holes have long since closed up.

I did wear magnet earrings for my wedding, though. I think that's such a cool idea that I wouldn't mind getting more of those.

(I wouldn't have commented if not for this line.)

Hello, I'm an earring hater. When I was about 8, newspaper kiosks started selling cheap Chinese stud earrings. They were very sparkly and quite a lot of girls in my class got a pair. I whined and pleaded, and Mom bought me a pair (ooh shiny) but said she didn't trust piercers and their filthy flesh-rippers: if I was going to get my ears pierced, it'd have to be at 18 at the Beauty Institute, with a needle (like she had done).

In about a month (when the earrings sold out) I got over it, and eventually changed my mind. I love my little fluffy pillow earlobes. (I like looking at women with earrings but I'd hate earrings on me.)

Culturally european men with earrings look faggy, a man with earring(s) has to be "ethnic" or a pirate.

I think anyone can get them if they want. But I can't see the appeal of having shot into your earlobe.

I have two peircings in each ear and both were done with a peircing gun, I don't recommend that option! Apparently the gun is nearly impossible to fully sterilize and both times I had itching and burning after the peircing was gone. One of my hole sets gave me trouble for a long time and now I wear a small set of rings in them all the time to keep them open.
You can't take those piercing guns apart, so the best they can do is kind of pour and rub alcohol into the machine to get the worst off. The gun is also a blunt piece of metal, not a needle. They punch a hole through your ear with blunt force. This actually heals poorly, and you can feel a "bead" in the earlobe if it is done with a piercing gun (squeeze the earlobe and roll your fingers around, you'll feel something like a bead inside). The best option is a real piercing shop since they use a sharp sterile needle and its their job to pierce. Rather than some jeweller who can barely handle the gun.

As for OP, as a guy I think they can be quite nice. I personally like the not-too-big dangling ones. Like a sculpted flower head on a thin metal stem.
