I think it's because they see dollar signs, they know if it bombs they still make money. Because its a well known franchise, it is a perfect scam really. Basically it is very telling what the movie 'The Producers' did, which was they came up with a theory that could land them more money with a flop than a hit by over hyping the movie (there is a more to the story but I'll be going off topic about The Producers)

Anyways I think that is what Sony is doing, is selling a movie knowing it could bomb.

You underestimate how much money feminists will dump into a cause that "redpill meninist misogynists" don't like *cough* Anita's entire career *cough*

They'll defend it as one of the funniest movies they've seen in their lives for exactly one week and call it revolutionary for women in comedy and buy merch and see the movie again and then after that one week period they will never bring it up or talk about it again.

Yeah, not buying it.

Odds are high that Social Justice Warriors won't even bother to go see it. Not with how slacktivist culture works. I agree with @Dynastia that this is likely to be a wet fart in someone's trousers and then is forgotten about soonafter.

BTW, has Chris weighed in on this? After all, it's not the TRUE Ghostbusters. ;)

Closest reboot disaster that comes to mind is probably Jem but that franchise is no where near as big as Ghostbusters, one sneaky thing they did was ask fans to make a video about what they liked about the original cartoon and they then added it in the movie and made it look like they are taking about the reboot. (The Dragonball Z and The Last Airbender movies also caused a lot of upset fans but they're not exactly reboots)

I'll confess I was bummed about Jem, but not in a "RAPED MY CHILDHOOD!!!" way. It was more because me and my cousin were huge Jem fans as kids (we had all the dolls, and merchandise, etc), and it would've been a lot of fun to go and see it together. That movie was in the theater what, 2 whole weeks?

If he does comment I bet Chris just goes along with the sexist men narrative and says something like "Sorry y'all male trolls are so immature and can't handle a little change! It's about time us gals got the spotlight!"

I've heard the movie takes a pot shot at the negative reception the movie has online I wonder if it'll be more cringeworthy then when everyone gets their jowles riled up over it.
I honestly have no idea why Sony think they can make a franchise out of this.

Doubtful, most movies are completely finished several months in advance of their actual release.

They did indeed.

I dont even care about the movie or the fact that its supposed to be genderswapped.
I just find it funny that the women they cast aren't even that funny to me. there are plenty of funny female comedians.

It could be worse. They could have cast Amy Schumer, and that chick is so patently unfunny it's almost criminal.

I'm mostly upset about Kristen Wiig, though. She did a great job with the poignant-yet-darkly-comic role as someone with Borderline Personality Disorder in Welcome to Me, and I love her VA work (she's Ruffnut in the HTTYD movies). She's got good acting and even comedy potential that I wouldn't mind seeing nurtured. But with all the attention; good and bad; that this movie's getting, it could be a career breaker/stopper for someone like her. Unlike, say, McCarthy, who has a stronger reputation that can take a few shitty hits and still keep going.

Was McCarthy the one rumored to be completely ashamed of her involvement in this because she was an original GB fan or was that Wiig? I remember there was a leak of a lot of drama with the production and I think one of them absolutely could not stand the other. Might have been Wiig hating Jones a lot.

I'm honestly surprised that they didn't cast Amy Schumer.

Huh, I didn't hear about that. If anyone has a source to confirm, I'd love to hear it.

Really though, doesn't it seem kind of telling that a good chunk of those who are involved in this project really seem like they wanted nothing to do with it? I don't really blame them for going along with it, though, no matter how much they didn't want to. After all, that's Hollywood for you; controlled by the production companies. Sony probably gave them the "you'll eat this shit sandwich we're making or you'll never work in this town again" threat.

Nah, Chris is probably going to sperg out about the shitty Filmation Ghostbusters that nobody but him cares about.

EDIT:
I JUST FOUND THIS
THIS CANNOT BE A COINCIDENCE

I'm not gonna lie, if this movie were in the hands of a more capable/better suited director, like Phil Lord & Chris Miller or Edgar Wright, this could have been something special. But Sony couldn't help but rub their greasy dicks all over it.

I just want a movie with a strong black woman who does not have the current means or resources to cope with the current situation followed by a reaffirmation of the previous statement

in summary:

nah, she cannot handle this right now. nah uh.
