This is an amazing movie by Henry Fonda. It was released on TV and is now in the Public Domain. it dramatizes the Supreme Court case of Gideon v. Wainwright. Clarence E. Gideon was an indigent man in Florida who was accused of breaking and entering the Bay Harbor Pool Room. Because of his prior felony convictions, the State of Florida applied the maximum possible sentence. During his trial, Gideon requested an Attorney to represent him. He was refused by the court, and after his inept public defense, was convicted and sent to prison. While in Prison, using prison paper and a pencil, he appealed to the US Supreme Court for Writ of Certiorari. Writ was granted. The Court ordered a retrial with an Attorney, and Gideon was subsequently acquitted.
Even an absolute mad lad, a felon, and the worst of the worst, could appeal to the US Courts, and win.
A good documentary of the case
