What they fail to understand is that there are some crimes--some acts of depravity and cruelty-- which so egregiously violate, not simply our social/legal order, but our moral order, that when dealing with their perpetrators it is no longer about quaint ideas like punishment or deterrence or proportionality -- it's about just retribution: it's about providing a measure of catharsis to the community/society, as a whole, that was victimized by being made to contend with these monsters.
If you can't exist on this planet without using innocent little children as a means of gratifying your base, sexual urges-- or abducting random people to torture them for days at a time in your basement, or walking into an elementary school classroom and opening fire etc. etc.-- then you need to be excised from society the way a malignant tumor needs to be excised from a body.
