Culture GLAAD report warns 'alarming number' of LGBTQ TV shows and characters will disappear next year - Good riddance

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) released a new report Tuesday revealing that, due to an "alarming number of LGBTQ-fronted shows" ending, nearly 30% of LGBTQ characters will likely disappear.

GLAAD's 18th report on the status of LGBTQ representation on television found that a total of 596 LGBTQ characters were featured in scripted TV in the 2022-2023 season. This represented an approximate 6% drop from the previous year.

The report noted 175 of these characters, about 29%, won't be returning. Twenty-four percent of those characters were featured on shows that are either being canceled or finishing their final season, while the other 35 characters were in limited miniseries or anthologies with revolving casts.

The GLAAD report said it is "concerning" that many "series getting cut are LGBTQ-inclusive programs, leaving a large demographic of viewers constantly searching for new programs only for them to ultimately be canceled before a satisfying conclusion. In recent years, an alarming number of LGBTQ-fronted shows have ended."

"At a time when transgender Americans are facing a growing number of dangerous and discriminatory attacks in rhetoric and policy, Hollywood players who are real allies to our community have a responsibility and an opportunity to create stories that humanize trans people and educate viewers about being transgender," GLAAD President & CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement.

She continued, "With attacks on the LGBTQ community in political and news spaces, Hollywood has more influence than ever and it's critical the stories they invest in telling include fair and accurate depictions of LGBTQ people that reflect the humanity of our community."

"It’s clear that when a service fully invests in its LGBTQ shows, this programming rises above a crowded media landscape and is successful with both critics and audiences," Ellis said in the report. "It is then disappointing to see this year that over 20 percent of LGBTQ characters counted here will not be returning in next year’s report due to series endings or cancellations."

The report also found that a majority of those characters, about 60%, were found on streaming services such as Netflix, HBO Max or Hulu versus broadcast or cable television.

Megan Townsend, GLAAD’s Senior Director of Entertainment Research & Analysis, also lamented that characters were "not evenly prioritized" across streaming services and television. However, she remained hopeful about the future for LGBTQ characters.

"t’s clear that well-crafted LGBTQ-inclusive series with full support behind them at all levels can break through a crowded landscape and become 'must-watch' successful shows for critics and audiences alike, such as ‘Yellowjackets,’ ‘Hacks’, ‘The Umbrella Academy,’ ‘The Last of Us,’ and more have proven. We hope to see more networks and streamers follow these examples by investing in and proactively marketing nuanced, diverse LGBTQ stories," Townsend said.

They're pissed because their 'representation' and 'diversity' are getting flushed down the drain. But they won't admit why -- because their stuff is shit and doesn't make any money!

DC just shitcanned Tim Drake: Robin. This is the one with super gay Robin that every Batman fan looked at and went, 'The fuck you talking about?'. Lasted ten issues. Nobody fucking bought the comics!

They keep chasing these phantom demographics, and not only do the sales not materialized, they are utterly surprised_pikachu when they lose their customers. No wonder they need ESG grants -- it's the only thing keeping them afloat!

Have they tried not being obnoxious online, stop the communism shit and quit grooming kids? Think that’s a better game plan then having a bunch of faggot netflix shows sucking them off.

Report here.

If you're wondering what the percentage is, they give it as ~10% of characters in regular broadcast programs, and stay vague about what the percentages are for cable or streaming services.

Clearly they'd rather believe some sort of conspiracy theory than that programs which relentlessly browbeat and moralise people with faggotry aren't profitable entertainment.

Deadly fungal infection spreading at an alarming rate, CDC says
The fungus, a type of yeast called Candida auris, or C. auris, can cause severe illness in people with weakened immune systems.

Lol. Lmao, even.

I watched shit ton of TV shows growing up till by mid 20s. The only gay characters that come to my mind are Smithers(Simpsons) and Big gay Al, Garrison, Mr. Slave (South Park). I know the actor that played Barney(How i met your mother) is gay IRL, but he didn't play a role of a fag in that show. I can even throw in two new shows Euphoria(Jules and Rue).

One of my favourite TV shows of all time Hannibal, they had to make both main characters gay for eachother in the last episode. Thank god they stopped the show because the main charkter rather wanted to play Daredevil. No one knows who the actor is that plays Daredevil and Mads Mikkelsen became a Superstar, so at least one good thing came out of that.

Liberals would use my comment to say that there aren't enough gay people on TV, truth is no one wants to see them or gives a fuck.
Maybe make a Charakter interesting instead of throwing in a token gay guy, that no one gives a fuck about.

That's the issue. Forced representation or diversity is fucking stupid. No, 'bigotry' or whatever won't be magically solved if there are exactly 34% gay characters on television.

But just having all types of characters on the table and using them as needed is all that needs to be fucking done. And braying and whining about how there isn't 'enough' is fucking dumb.

I'd argue the character of Omar, from the Wire, did more for 'representation' than 3000 forgettable Netflix DIE shows. He was a black, gay, shotgun toting drug dealer, but he was fucking interesting and his being gay had nothing to do with why.

Make DIE shit secondary and not a primary thing and focus on creating interesting stories/characters.

Imagine being paid to track LGBT tv show characters for a living. These people produce nothing of substance for society, they can only survive via parasitism.

They're called wikipedia editors and they aren't paid.

It was more a passing fad or a testing of the waters, I think. Things are slowly shifting the other way, so obviously these shows will fade into irrelevancy. That won't stop producers from making more when things swing back in their favor, though.
It’s the fact that stuff takes awhile to make. So what you is always a few years out of date to what people think.

All the shpws greenlit years ago are now finally done

If the TV shows were generally disliked enough to not get renewed, that should be a sign for a change in quality. If you throw in a few gay characters for the sake of having a gay character, people will notice it. A good TV show shouldn’t have to fulfill a series of check boxes. If people actually like the storyline and characters, people will watch, and to me that should be of more importance than pleasing organizations like GLAAD.

Sad to see people who can’t even enjoy the simple act of watching television anymore. God forbid a show exists to be entertaining, and not solely created just for a bunch of sheltered retards to feel UwU validated.

TV shows (and you can add movies, video games, and other media too), also seem to have the need to explain every detail of the show in a post-show format, instead of doing the old tried-and-true ways of doing that during the show, or leaving the details out to keep a mystery aura with characters or events, or to leave those details open to personal interpretation.

It's proof you were accepted, you've lived long enough to get old, and then get cancelled and moved aside for the next big thing.....

If you actually thought your pop culture supremacy would last forever because it was somehow different and special?
See, that's the thing. They still believe themselves to be the downtrodden underdogs who are struggling to get society at large to simply acknowledge that they exist. This, despite the fact that just about every show made in the past ten years has at least one prominent gay character, and every serial has at least one episode where the mean ol' bigot learns that being trans is heckin' valid. Also the CIA and about 10 trillion dollars worth of megacorp capital are holding a Buttsex Jubilee at Disney World. But none of that matters because they don't have literally infinite power to do anything they want to anybody they want. It's either all or nothing with them.

They don't think that their time is passing - they think their time hasn't even begun yet. They are insane narcissists and it will never, ever be enough. And eventually, the rest of the world is going to pick up on that. It might take another 20 years, but the younger generations are being taught that gays have to hide in the shadows for their own safety while simultaneously holding state-enforced drag queen story time and pride parades every single day. That's going to create some powerful cognitive dissonance, which is going to turn into resentment and anger.

46% of gay men were molested as a child....I'll just leave that there.
Correction: 46% of gay men admit to being molested as a child. An unknown percentage was molested but won't admit to it (or have blocked it out), and another unknown percentage was molested but doesn't consider a 40 year old gay man having sex with a 13 year old boy to be molestation because they were groomed into believing it was wholesome 100 chungus. Add these percentages up and I'd wager you'll come quite close to 100%. I'm willing to concede that perhaps 10% of gay men are gay for other, less traumatizing reasons.

I too am sad Doom Patrol is ending.
Wait that's not what this is about? Don't care.
