Any other fans who enjoy this cheese? This band is absolutely fucking retarded and I love it

For the uninitiated, Gloryhammer isn't necessarily a parody band per se, rather a "affectionate" parody that fully embraces the ridiculous over the top cheesiness of fantasy metal and cranks it up to 11 to make something truly ridiculous and cheesy but in a good way.

The cheesefest of the lore currently spans 3 albums which tell the story of Angus McFife and his descendants taking on the evil chaos wizard Zargothrax. From astral robot zombies to nuclear powered space submarines there's plenty of cheese to go around

Saw the other day they have a new singer and listened to the new single. He's not bad, but he's nothing special either. I guess I'll see if another song will entice me to give a fuck about their new album. A pity, because Legends from Beyond the Galactic Terrorvortex was great

Yeah it sucks. The original singer had some "grit" to his voice that made him stand out and he had a good stage presence.

The original singer (Thomas Winkler) got booted and the band was quiet as to why they kicked him out. After he was kicked it turned out Thomas trademarked the name Angus McFife in Switzerland sometime ago all without the band's knowledge.

Then he kept doing cameos in other bands such as Grail Knights as the character Angus McFife despite no longer being in the band.

I can only speculate what happened but based off this behaivor I get the feeling Thomas was probably the one at fault

I've always been impressed that they aren't just a parody/novelty band but actually really capable musicians and songwriters. Probably some of the best power metal currently out there IMO.

Did anyone involve ever announce the firing in character like the really petty, vindictive bullshit Twilight Force did when they kicked their old singer out?

Sucks too because the original Angus McFife's voice was great. Nice range and energy and I loved the pseudo-Scottish accent that occasionally popped up.

As far as I'm aware the only thing the band has said about the matter was a very vague tweet on the Gloryhammer twitter account announcing he's no longer a member of Gloryhammer:

Thomas' response provided some nugget of information, particularly "disagreements on business and organizational matters":

It's worth noting someone who had access to the band's private chat messages leaked some messages, mostly over racist remarks and other dumb shit like that. Among the messages some of the band members were saying Tom's voice wasn't good and the sound guy was the one doing most of the work.

Apparently he hasn't received proper voice training which may mean his voice is getting shredded from over use. I suspect this may of been a portion of the reason why they tossed him.

He's also been up to other Tom fuckery (hah puns) pre and post Gloryhammer:
Based off his behavior he had to of been up to some stupid shit

And sorry for the mucho texto, I'm autistically invested in this

Any screencaps or descriptions of the alleged racism?

It's been a while since I've listened to their three albums (and I usually do it pretty drunk), but I could believe this to a degree with how prominent the backing vocals/choirs are on their third album. If there was ever a problem, they covered it up well.

The Reddit thread gives some interesting information on the trademark issue. Who would've guessed the true final battle between Angus McFife and Zargothrax would be in a European courtroom?

It's noticeable in some of their live performances mainly the newest ones with Thomas. The non-live stuff is heavily edited to make it sound as good as possible which is the case for most bands

While some some of the live stuff is from poor audio capture, there's times where he's very off in his voice.

Particularly Bloodstock 2021 gets bad at times, so bad even Reddit was talking about how he's getting worse (archive)
Here's the live performance. 9:00 onward you can start to hear his voice falter a bit:

I don't think he sounds terrible it just feels like he's gotten worse with time when you compare it to his Dragonforce audition from years ago:

So I checked out their new single, the singer sounds like he's doing his best to copy the original. But who cares, he's still good, it's still fun.
He's also been up to other Tom fuckery (hah puns) pre and post Gloryhammer:
Here's another one he guested on from 2014. Metal-Archives says he's credited as "Angus McFife" here.

I guess the gold standard in power metal is to be like Fabio Lione where you can be a lifelong smoker and somehow nearly 25+ years later still sound good. A shame Tom hasn't aged as well as other singers in the genre.

I haven't listened to them much, but what I've heard is good!

I don't usually listen to "comedy metal" these days, since one, no band will ever again be as funny as Anal Cunt, and two, last time I tried looking up comedy metal, Youtube spent the next three months recommending me one Eskimo Callboy video after another.

Gloryhammer seems fine, though. Angus is a great singer, and he was the standout part of that Nanowar vid that went viral over quarantine. I also appreciate that they don't spend every god-damn album talking about pirate ships.

Is there a "best" album?

If you want to get the lore down I'd recommend listening to them in order. Otherwise I liked legends beyond the galactic terror vortex the most

Fuck that's gay. I really like Thomas's voice on the albums I've listened to by them but the new guy isn't so bad. This will always be my favorite song by them.

Not technically "Gloryhammer" but Thomas released a new song with his new band.

I wish he would of handled the transition with a bit less shade and the voice is mixed a bit too low over the music but regardless I enjoyed it. Now I got two cheesy bands to enjoy

Hail to Hoots The Master of the Universe

Is there evidence of this or is it speculation? Bowes seems like a dick but with the stuff Tom was doing it doesn't strike me as something they made up on the spot

its all speculation

but that sounds like a lot of crap. nobody of the Bands Tom worked with over the last years has anything pinned on their official videos with him about him being bad and some of those songs did come out right at that time and they all work for the same company...

What makes me suspicious is him doing collabs without consulting the band first (not they had a problem with him doing collabs, they just thought it was weird he went behind their backs) and Tom trademarked Angus Mcfife without the band's knowledge.

Not that I'm saying for sure Tom is in the wrong, maybe the others did him dirty or maybe everyone involved did stupid shit, who knows. We'll likely never know what actually went down with how quiet both sides are on the matter.

Animation was really good I'm surprised. Compared to the Alestorm video with the same animation they went all out with this one
