Gloryhammer thread - An epic battle is fight

The new McSix album released yesterday.
https://youtu.be/l8PH4Vm1Uxg

Honestly ended up way better than I expected, for some reason the 3 singles they released were some of the worst songs on the entire album.

There's no Bowes to write lyrics anymore, The Orden Ogan guy has done some very questionable mixing in the past, Thomas had some serious voice issues, and the first single was a Gloryhammer diss track.
This had every opportunity to be a 4/10 overmixed nightmare with bad lyrics only serving to stroke Winkler's ego.

And they actually managed to make it pretty good.
The mixing is still not great in a few songs, the lyrics are a bit weaker than Gloryhammer, but the cheese is absolutely on point.

Highlights include "Ride to Hell", "In a Past Reality", and "Starlord of the Sixtus Stellar System". Sadly no 12 minute epic metal ballad at the end of this one.

Still gotta properly listen to it a few more times, but so far compared to other Gloryhammer albums i'd rank it like this :
1. Space 1992
2. Tales from the Kingdom of Fife
3. Angus McSix and the Sword of Power
4. Legends from Beyond the Galactic Terrorvortex

7.5/10 Not Bad, still baffled why they put the tracks in the wrong listening order though.

The mixing is what really gets me. In some songs I can't hear tom well

Animation was really good I'm surprised. Compared to the Alestorm video with the same animation they went all out with this one
This is the song which sold me on this iteration of the band. Fantasy Metal is only as good as it's "Villain" songs, and they did this one very well.

Compare that to Angus's latest video that looks like Marc M ( Sick Animation ) drew it, but with less charm.

I'm hoping their budget gets better after this album once the sales money comes in. Same with their sound mixing. But the song still slapped imo

I'm unsure if I should make a angus mcsix thread or make this into a dual thread since he split off to make his own band

Angus McSix is disappointing even if the lyrics can be kinda funny. It's so wrapped up in the concept it forgot to actually be a metal album, but because it's so wrapped up in the concept it can't be a cool EDM/whatever album either. I don't even hate that sort of "dance pop metal" like Amaranthe or whatever, but it feels like so much more could've been done with the style (a few of the songs do admittedly). Which means abandoning part of the core awesomeness of Gloryhammer where they're kinda making fun of the genre while playing it the absolute best way possible.

NOBLE AND TRUE WITH A HEART OF STEEL
>2013
FUCK I'M GETTING OLD

Not sure if it's lip synced but Tom sounds much better live compared to how he used to sound

Listening to the album felt like an endless frustrating half-boner where you could almost feel the punch Gloryhammer had, but it never came.
Master of the universe was kinda mid but also probably the best song of the lot and I'm sad to say that.

However I was pleasantly surprised with Keeper of Celestial Flame, the new singer kinda shows his potential and the song is catchy.

It's better than like 95% of new releases but it can't top the previous two albums. Not like much could. Although maybe I'm biased because I was listening to it through my car speakers while half deaf after a concert while delirious on too much caffeine+lingering remnants of the booze from earlier. Way better than Angus McSix though.

Except for "Wasteland Warrior Hoots Patrol". That one still won't get out of my head.

The one thing that irked me was the musical references to previous albums. I wouldn't say it's annoying, but it's not a very well done use of leitmotifs for the characters/setting and cheapens the experience since the other albums didn't need that to be awesome. Isn't repeating lines about crystal laser battle axes and mighty hammers enough?

Thomas sounded like shit in the more recent Gloryhammer live vids because he had been touring in a band for nearly 10 years and has a day job as a lawyer (apparently he is something of a multi millionaire but that's just from reddit talk). Any metal singer will sound like shit after 10 years, look at Iron Maiden in the early 90s for instance as Bruce claimed the constant touring was ruining his voice and he needed a break.

If you want to see some stuff on why the band is slowly going to shit along with alestorm just take a quick look at Bowes' reddit account (https://www.reddit.com/user/hyperchrisz), he pretty much admits multiple times that he has given up completely on making good music and just wants to ride the wave. Here was a post in the power metal subreddit crying about the over saturation of goofy power metal:

Of course he notices this and is very open that Gloryhammer were one of the first bands to take the goofy shit to the mainstream:

I'll always stick up for Bowes and say that his first 4 alestorm album (and now first 3 gloryhammer albums) have some of the best power metal songs from the post 2000s easily. That creativity can't last and it is clear that he simply doesn't want to be creative anymore which is a shame but meh plenty of bands in the sea.

I disagree with him to an extent, the music is what makes people stay. The goofiness is just a bonus. Gloryhammer is the only goofy band I've enjoyed because the music is good. To me it sounds like Chris is bitter his preferred style of music is not currently mainstream enough

And speaking of dumb meme shit

The first music video had a lot of nods to He-man as well. Like... bordering on lawsuit similar.
