and the first thing that trannies contribute are "codes of conduct" that massively restrict writing good patches, or at least, takes the fun out of it.
Code of conducts that discriminate against certains types of people is the equivalent of using a non-free license. It's like another loophole
Too bad it ended up being a shitty piece of software that could hardly manage flash games, oh yeah, and then flash died.
Yeah it could hardly handle multiple audio clips playing without the 30000ms delay error appearing
By contribution, I meant something actually substantial, like GCC or the coreutils. Truth is, all they care about right now is bitching, moaning and sending stallman on trips around the world where he can bitch, moan and tell people to say GNU/Linux rather than actually sitting the fuck down and programming something that people would want to use.
Calling it GNU/Linux actually differentiates it from other userlands like BusyBox/Linux or Android/Linux, since there could be some differences between the userlands' commands
And yes, I do feel for Richard Stallman, he does deserve the credit and I hate books that call the GNU coreutils/busybox/shit "linux commands", as if the kernel has commands

When you have two part names, very rarely do people say both parts; they just say the easiest/sweetest part of that word and move on. I have not heard people calling Android, Android/Linux, because it sounds fucking stupid. Those who are in the know, know that Android uses Linux as it's kernel, for everyone else, it's an unnecessary detail. I don't see Linus Torvalds bitching at people for not calling it Android/Linux.

Same idea applies to GNU and the FSF. It's a massive fucking hurdle to say GANOO SLASH LINUCKS every time you wanna refer to your fucking OS. Aside from that, GNU is not an appealing name, most people don't even know if they are supposed to spell each letter or just say it as one word. Also, the GNU project never even completed the OS they set out to make (they don't even maintain a GNU distribution!), the Linux kernel developers did; yes they used the tools written by the FSF and the GNU project, but that doesn't mean they get to call their OS as the GNU project demands it. I don't call my house Black & Decker/House because I used tools made by Black & Decker to build it.

Stallman is an arrogant cunt and he could have co-opted the Linux kernel from the beginning, instead he chose to be stubborn and continued working on the dead-end kernel architecture they chose and when people decided to go the other way and create their own kernel and put it beside other pieces, his ego was hurt because he was not getting all the credit. That's all there is to it really.

I do feel for Stallman as well, but he has himself to blame. He made terrible strategic choices with the project and now he's far more interested in being an "activist" than being a developer, and while activism is an important part of this movement, it's by no means all that is needed. The GNU Project and the FSF need to do some actual development rather than constantly bitch and moan. Want people to remember the FSF and the gnu project? shut the fuck up and develop some tools.

Seeing how almost all hardware that matters these days is some kind of proprietary black box or other, you'll never have a kernel that's also useful for running real hardware using all it's features without the corps who make the hardware involved in the development of the kernel. That's the big thing that changed linux into a viable choice but instantly made it basically a corporate product because it's very dependant on all these huge tech companies chipping in.

Start developing for the Z180 is what I am saying. It has an MMU and can address 1 MB.

If I was Stallman, i would have kept working on GNU HURD, even if Linux already existed, Would have avoided an entire war over naming it Linux or GNU/Linux

But encouraging contribution doesn't necessarily mean code, it means any form of contribution, and the first thing that trannies contribute are "codes of conduct" that massively restrict writing good patches, or at least, takes the fun out of it.

to be fair watching him throw a tantrum in a presentation is pretty entertaining, so they are doing a service to the world.

Man, rip to the GNU thread. I quite like the coreutils from the GNU guys, much more usable than your standard POSIX stuff you get on BSDs. I do however dislike the non-compliance to the standard by default, you'd imagine they could have the flags defined for each command in POSIX to keep consitent with their POSIX behavior and any other flags could be GNU extended. Also anyone who says GPLv3 isn't based is a dirty commie that wants code for free to use in their proprietary systems. Be a real commie and contribute to something.

GNU coreutils are a bloated, unmaintainable mess. Just look at the source. It is terrible. And instead of ever cleaning shit up, they just stack more shit on top for bizarre edge cases that never matter to more than five people. My own system uses busybox as coreutil replacement and I'm GNU free where I can.

You laugh, but I post to KF exclusively from a VAX with the defective virtual memory TLB unit that was shipped in late January/early February 1978 and they can remove that case from Autotools over my dead body.
