GOG.com Backtracks on Devotion Release After Allegedly Receiving “Messages From Gamers”

Literally every other country in the world is fine with their leaders being mocked

TL;DR far from every other "country" (gubmint) is fine with their own leaders being mocked, and some will even go after you for insulting Xi.

Man, what happened to GoG and CDPR? They have crumbled within a single month.
I joined when they were still in beta. According to locals, GOG has been crumbling / "crumbling" since September 2010 at the latest. Some of the points in the drama include:
- the Sep 2010 publicity stunt and the (now beloved and dearly missed, then mocked and despised on a private forum) Trevor Longino
- selling new games
- selling DLC
- selling season passes
- preorder exclusives
- the lack of Linux versions even when they're available on other stores
- slow support, requests going missing
- important announcements on social media only
- slow game updates (lazy staff, contracts with shitty developers)
- castrated game versions
- how do you do fellow kids anti-DRM initiative
- regional prices
- the end of compensation for regional pricing
- generally incoherent pricing policy
- giveaways on social media
- shitty treatment of contest winners
- closing the Brazilian store and forum
- the many moderation sagas
- website redesign
- deleting community collections
- shitty forum software (usabilty problems, massive security flaws)
- GOG Galaxy
- Galaxy installer embedded in DRM-free installers
- Gwent (the videogame)
- game rejections
...

If a mob of angry soccer moms want a game banned/changed it's censorship

If a mob of right wing christians want a game banned/changed it's censorship

If chicoms want a game banned/changed it's censorship

If progressives want a game banned/changed well it's a store's right to choose what they put on it, it's just curation and if the developers choose to change the content because troons are threatening to rape their kids it's their right to change their minds

Gaming platform drops Taiwanese game over hidden reference to Xi Jinping

International gaming platform GOG on Wednesday (Dec. 16) pulled Taiwanese horror game "Devotion" (還願) from its store over a hidden reference in the game that mocks Chinese leader Xi Jinping (習近平).

Just hours after it announced that "Devotion" — which was first removed from video game distribution platform Steam last year — would be sold on its website starting Dec. 18, GOG backpedaled on the plan over boycott calls from Chinese gamers. In a Twitter post, GOG said it decided to drop the Taiwanese game "after receiving many messages from gamers."

Initially released on Steam in February 2019, "Devotion" took the online gaming community by storm with its unsettling atmosphere that combines elements of Taiwanese folklore and a fictional abandoned apartment complex in Taiwan.

However, players discovered a Taoist talisman in one part of the game had the words "Xi Jinping Winnie the Pooh" in an ancient style of Chinese writing, referencing an internet meme used to disparage Xi. Also on the talisman were the words "ni ma ba qi" (呢嘛叭唭), the same pronunciation as "your mother is a moron" in the Hokkien language, which is widely spoken in Taiwan.

The controversial in-game "Easter Egg" led to apologies from the Taiwanese developer Red Candle Games (赤燭), which described the symbol as "a malfunction of project management." Although the company later provided an update of the game, boycott calls continued in China until "Devotion" was removed from Steam after just six days on sale.

After GOG revealed its plan to bring back "Devotion" on Wednesday, thousands of Chinese netizens flooded the platform's Twitter page and demanded the game be removed. Meanwhile, Twitter users from other countries voiced support for the Taiwanese game and urged the platform not to cave in to Chinese pressure.

In a released statement following "Devotion's" removal, Red Candle Games expressed regret over the news but said it understood and respected GOG's decision. It also apologized to gamers who were looking forward to the game's re-release, reported UDN.

CDPR has bigger problems with Cyberpunk than if mainland chinks can buy it or not but alright.

Its a real shame because I really used to shill gog since it was probably the most consumer friendly. But from now on ill probably trash talk them more then I ever did steam.
Gotta do the same, into the trash it goes. If they want to follow the path of Steam in censorship, they deserve to go bankrupt. I remember how shills in the visual novel community were fawning over GOG and how it was so much better than Steam because it doesn't censor. Not anymore.

NEVER trust a company that has grown too big. They are all sellouts, authoritarianism-loving globalists and absolutely devoid of shame and ability to distinguish right from wrong.

You know what? Call me a shill, but I find Chinese censorship a hell of a lot less depressing then troon and american racial censorship. I doubt China is going to put embargo on "Images of happy white families" any time soon.

Yeah it's retarded you can't say "Winnie the Flu". You know what impact that has on my work life? Zero.
You know what impact Critical Race Theory has on my work life? QUITE A FUCKING LOT.

Nigga, censorship is bad in ALL of its forms. Both SJW and Chi-Com censorship are cancers to society, and if you can't see that, then your brain's just as rusty as the crab that's your avatar.

This reasoning is why the Chinese are laughing at us while we blame Russia for thinking that Donald Trump is a villain out of 007 James Bond movie. Bait harder than that.

They need to start censoring EA and bethesda games so all the bad devs go away.

Honestly, this pisses me off more than their handling of Cyberpunk 2077. At the end of the day, Cyberpunk 2077 is basically every AAA release disaster rolled into one. Buggy as all get out? Check. Nothing like what was promised several years ago? Check. Caters to troons/minorities only for them to whine about it? Check. Army of shills defending it despite the overwhelming negativity? Check.

But kowtowing to China and then blaming your core audience and paying customers on something is absolutely disgusting. Get fucked GOG, you were only selling hacked-up abandonware anyway.
