I'm trying to cut out coffee and tea since the caffeine in them is giving me atrocious heartburn.

Teas full of tannins too. Just need to look at the mug after a few cups and figure that's what it's doing to my teeth. Tried redbush which has no caffeine but still stains the cup.

Is there any decent caffeine and tannin free hot drinks that are a viable alternative? I like a hot drink but don't think I can settle for just drinking cups of hot water.

Try Yerba Mate! It is a Brazilian hot drink that apparently has all the caffeine potency as coffee but without the crash.

Alternatively- there are alot of plant-based alternatives to Monster energy drinks that really help keep you awake. Alot of these smaller energy drink companies are at least partially owned by veterans who know what it's like to have to pull an all-nighter without chugging down garbage American food, Riot energy is good- that's my usual go-to.

The cool part about tea is how extensive they can get. If you're worried about tannins you could always try finding white teas to try, as white tea is the most minimally processed when compared to green, black, and puerh teas. It doesn't have as high of a caffeine content though, but I personally find it's better to switch up your caffeine intakes anyway. Also a good note, lemon juice neutralizes the tannins in tea so it's less affective on your system. Oh yeah, don't forget to drink loose-leaf, and have a proper thermometer around to properly temp-check your water. If your scorch your tea leaves with too hot of water it'll make the tannins seep out more, and give your tea a bad taste (especially with green teas).

Knew a Mexican kid growing up. His grandmother made something called "Canella". Basically it was getting sticks of cinnamon and boiling them in water for a few minutes, then adding a bit of sugar (and milk if you're Br*tish). It's not technically tea since it uses cinnamon sticks instead of leaves, and it pretty good. I make it from time to time during the winter if I want something warm without the caffeine. The trick is to buy the Mexican cinnamon, maybe it's a placebo but I swear the Mexican cinnamon makes the tea taste better

Maybe try to take l-theanine powder? It's the active component in tea, even though tea contain both caffeine and l-theanine. So it's unknown if you react on both or only one component.

Just drinking caffeine will make you jittery, but l-theanine will give you a more "calm" energy and offset the jitteriness.

Drink herbal teas. Like mint, chamomile, lavender, anything with fruit. Green and black teas are the stuff with caffeine, so just avoid that 🤷🏽‍♀️ and for coffee, you can always try chicory. It's an effective caffiene-free substitute.

I actually have theanine powder. I use it as a hangover cure sometimes, might just make that with some lemon juice to get around the wierd taste of it.

Bought two jars of Bovril. Not bothered about the stimulant effects of stuff, just nice having something to sip when your doing stuff around the house.

I've never had a "crash" with yerba mate but years of relying on it (since I like it more than tea and coffee and brew it by the gallon) will stain your teeth the same way as tea. It's incredible for caffeine and other compounds that make you energized, better than tea and caffeine, so might as well drink it.

It's related to two other drinks you can find, guayusa (from Ecuador, there are a few brands who sell it in the US) and yaupon (from the Deep South, the brand I sometimes brew up is from Texas), but those have less caffeine and taste "thinner" so maybe they won't stain the teeth?
