Artists should try to make their creations, whatever they may be, the way they want them to be. But once you fall to the fallacy of needing them to be different than what everyone else has ever made you pigeonhole yourself into worse and worse design choices, which traps artists in Deviantart/OC-Donut-Steele tier purgatory. Having the confidence to use techniques and theories for your own art in a way that has a dash of your own spin on it is, in my opinion, a sign of maturity in an artist's chosen medium.
