I've got several friends and colleagues who either work at Alphabet or have worked for them here in Austin and Mountain View, and they all have said it's a very poorly-run company in terms of product development and management. They can't seem to create anything that generates revenue beyond advertisements. Their enterprise services are somewhat profitable, but are not as competitive as other companies like IBM, Salesforce, etc. The money they make is in spite of their lousy management.

I'm not surprised they're doing this sort of thing and should be a warning to anyone who relies on their Google accounts for their data. You truly get what you pay for with a company like Google.

I really hope this is some sort of sick joke, or in the very least, something Google will back down from.

So many fucking accounts, many of which are long-gone in terms of activity, bring so much value to the Internet. I couldn't even begin to start up a list of things that could be lost. Google is the richest piece of shit company out there, they have petabytes to spare. They aren't going to net any more profit by deleting shit. This is one of those things that will be swiftly swept under by the algorithm, because Google.

I hate Google, but that doesn't stop the fact that they're the owners of YouTube. I'm going through my bookmarks and searching for channels which are potentially vulnerable to this retarded turn of events. Even if Google backs down, we can at least sigh a breath of relief to see our favorite shit backed up on Archive.org.

Well, I guess it's time for me to go shopping for some solid states and HDDs. If you guys have any recommendations for channels of a relatively small (like ones which are less likely to be noticed) size that you want me to archive, let me know. Google is nigger.

Seagate exos drives are pretty good. They come in various sizes (4tb and up is worthwhile), but why do you think getting bigger ones is going to be a problem? Somewhere around 12 TB is the best for dollars per TB.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm mostly concerned about channels which might be forgotten, as I'm sure that the more notable dead channels will have their own little archiving circlejerk parties.

Also relevant: this Ars Technica article. It seems like good news, but it mostly goes off of some guy's tweet. Do with that what you will.

these are the consequences for taking that philosophy to heart
if this goes through, centuries of interesting, valuable information will be lost for no good reason
almost the entirety of old YouTube will be destroyed and almost certainly 80% of Google Groups
this is going to be a modern-day Library of Alexandria incident
which is fitting considering that's what many people have compared the internet to
the OP already lists three incredibly insightful and useful channels that will be wiped clean
those three channels are likely just a few in a sea of unexplored curiosities that, now, will never have the chance to be discovered by future generations due to this embarrassment of a company's flagrant disregard for the value of their product and constantly terrible management
this shit is a crime against history, and it is a cruel joke that powerful companies like Google are allowed to get away with it

AFAIK that whole mantra came from girls posting nudes on 4chan like 20 years ago and then being shocked when other people saved and reposted them. YouTube videos need an ounce of brain power to save, even if you just search “YouTube video downloader online” and use some fly by night site, and plenty of people use phones and tablets that just don’t have very much storage, USB HDDs aren’t too expensive, but people like you and me who buy them and back up stuff are the exception rather than the norm.

So to add onto the “archive everything” mantra we have here, never ever assume someone else has archived something you want. Always archive it yourself.

First Twitter, and now Google.

It's very strange to think about; how with this decision, uploads or posts by now dead creators will simply be lost to time. I can't see this being anything but wholly negative to the world at large purely on that fact. Not even considering the amount of people unable to access accounts for extended times for jobs, trips, war, whatever. All for the sake of saving a dime.

Edit: Was thinking on it a bit more, and there are likely a couple other things that the companies would blame for these choices, i.e. inflated follower/subscriber counts, etc. but those could easily be remedied by a sort of timer on those things that then makes the accounts subs/follows "inactive" until the account is logged back into. We'll probably see more information on this in the coming months, but I'm not convinced they are doing this for anything other than wanting to save a few bucks on HDD costs. At the cost of a collective ability to view the past on the internet.

Whenever Google announces some new service or product I'm always skeptical of it for this reason. And apparently I'm not the only one, I've read it has actually hurt their business because so many people are hesitant to use shit they know is gonna get shut down with 99% certainty.

I only rely on Google for Gmail and YouTube, and frankly I'm starting to wonder if even YT is gonna go down the shitter in the future.

I have my accounts in Thunderbird and I just open it on occasion to login. Seems to work.

Given that they're supposed to start this by the end of the year, maybe someone at the company will realize how retarded this idea is and they'll do something smarter than just DFE'ing so much YouTube history.

Also, for a good measure I've logged into all my alts in a browser, and holy fuck, the way the verification process went for all these accounts was so retarded. Some asked me to do a 2FA SMS, some didn't and logged in right away, some asked for a verification code from my main e-mail and went through, some asked for that and still wanted to send a 2FA SMS.

If it was any other company this dysfunctional, they would've went under decades ago.

Geocities at one time, was THE website company for a time. Look how that shook out. The "Archive everything" vibe besides being a necessary thing due to a push of people of ill repute wanting to memory hole things spurring it on as well, I fully believe the archivist mindset for online content came about due to half the internet just disappearing in under five years.

The best way to archive stuff is to download the video. You can use offliberty for any video that isn't copyright protected like it won't work with music. Years ago, around 2015-2016 I used it to download a bunch of music for my GTA 5 custom soundtrack. Another downloader I found that works is is this one https://9convert.com/en328.

If you want to archive a website or maybe a tweet you can take a screen shot of it or with windows 10 you can right click on the site while in edge and use web capture. It will take a snapshot of the whole page.

The only true way to archive stuff is actually have it in your possession. Like on some sort of storage device.

I't's not a retarded decision, it makes perfect sense for what they want to acheive. Somewhere around 2016 the powers that be got a clear confirmation that legacy Internet was a mistake. This was only reinforced by the Internet's role in undermining the pandemic narrative in 2020. Legacy Internet (which basically meant using a search engine to look for "websites") will be replaced by a few monopolistic everything apps. All content will be tiktokized. Deleting old google accounts is a perfect year zero move to mark the transtition to nu-Internet where anything that doesn't adhere to the permanent cultural revolution standards of the current year can be easily expired
