Google’s Chrome extension cull hits more uBlock Origin users - USE FUCKING BRAVE

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Google is disabling the original uBlock Origin ad blocker for more Chrome browser users, alongside other extensions that are no longer supported as the browser migrates to its new extension specification, Manifest V3. According to Google, the new standard aims to improve privacy and security, but also removes a feature that some ad blocking extensions relied on to work — a compromise that Mozilla is unwilling to make for its own Firefox browser.

Users online are reporting on Reddit and X that Chrome is removing outdated extensions. In Chrome, a notification window will appear underneath the extensions tab on the browser taskbar with a message encouraging users to remove the impacted add-on, saying it has been turned off and is “no longer supported.” Two buttons are available that allow users to either quickly delete or manage their extensions.

Google’s uBlock Origin phaseout on Chromium-based browsers began in October, but started to have a wider impact in recent weeks. Bleeping Computer has also reported that extensions on staffers devices are being turned off, and Verge staffers have seen similar updates on our own machines.

These changes come as Google migrates Chrome away from the now defunct Manifest V2 specification. Support is being killed not just for uBlock Origin, but for any extension that hasn’t (or is unable to) update to Manifest V3. uBlock Origin users can switch to uBlock Origin Lite, which has more limited filtering capabilities than its predecessor due to Manifest V3’s ad blocking restrictions.

Chrome won’t be the only service affected by the Manifest V3 rollout — other Chromium-based web browsers like Microsoft Edge are also losing V2 support and Brave says it can only offer “limited” support once all Manifest V2 items are removed from the Chrome Web Store. Mozilla says that Firefox will continue offering both extension specifications, however, potentially giving uBlock Origin users a new browser to relocate to.

Is there any alternative to the above? Also, can uBlock Origin Lite be seen as tolerable for the time being?
I use chrome as my secondary browser and imo ublock lite is notably worse. Glitches, fails, just struggles, I only use chrome 1% of the time and the deficiency is still apparent.

use ios - it just works

pay for youtube premium - it just works

way easier than spending a bunch of time using 10 different apps/plugins to remove ads on youtube. until youtube decides to start showing ads for premium users eventually

fucked up my RSS notification app. nothing else exists out there for a decent extension for Feedly.

I'm a retard, can somebody recommend some good easy opsec? I've generally used Chrome for gmail/drive or anything where I'm putting payment info, banking info, or addresses, Brave for general browsing, and Brave private tabs (I know it doesnt really do shit but for some reason no cookies or local files makes me feel safer) for edgy shit like farms/chans/torrenting etc. Obviously through a vpn 99% of the time unless a specific site is blocking ip. I've used tor for a few things but pretty rarely.

Managing firefox forks with compatibility problems seems annoying and using containers or multiple profiles also seems annoying. Does this generally sound reasonable or is there another plug and play option I might try? Again forgive me if I'm retarded.

Can't breakup the monopoly if we break it up first fed boy.

if I am ever forced to start using metered data I am going to lose my fucking mind. No telecom will be left unscathed.
Tales from the third world:
Recently there was a big fire in one of big central Telecom stations where I live. Putting aside the fact that somehow this one building from the 1980s was responsible for ATMs, banking services, internet service, telephone services, stock exchange and god knows what else nationwide, this somehow caused whatever metering procedures that were in place for various ISPs to go down.

Lots of people reporting their internet speeds jumping more than tenfold from 2mb/s to 30 and beyond, and the dinky 250-400gb cap that almost everyone has because it's the comparatively affordable thing went untouched even though every ISP swore up and down there was no infrastructure to support uncapped home internet, or at least larger caps.

Anyways they eventually fixed it and as compensation for the downtime they sent out a whopping 10GB to everyone(that expires in 7 days).

brave are choosing their words very carefully. they are affected in the sense that you can't just use any v2 extension. they're not affected if you choose to use these 4 v2 extensions
short version: brave themselves are choosing to support 4 manifest v2 extensions. for how long is anybodies guess but i'd guess they're going to do it for 6-12 months and funnel more people into "brave shield" or whatever it is.

Not only has it fucked uBlock, but also things like The Marvelous Suspender which would suspend tabs after a period of disuse.

I do have Firefox and Brave on here so should probably get a move on switching to that for my main browser.

Unfortunately it was only a matter of time before Google cranked up their retardation on this, especially with most of the browser share belonging to Chromium based stuff now.

Pihole or adguard home
