GOTY 2023 thread

I actually played that back in 2021, I didnt touch it later cause it was too difficult for me, never finished a single run. Nice to know its on 1.0, wouldnt really say it released this year though.
I simply avoid early access titles, and the sole time I remember giving an exception (Gensokyo Night Festival in 2019) it still hasn't left its status.

It wasn't a great year for gaming. Much better than any other year so far in the 2020s, but still not great. Super Mario Bros. Wonder is pretty fun.
2023 was actually decent, but a noticeable step-down compared to 2021 and 2022 which were great years of vidya.
2024 is shaping up to be better though. Besides my two main titles that I named earlier (EDF6 and UO), I'm also looking forward to :
Shiren the Wanderer 6
Another Code Recollection
Granblue Fantasy Relink
Earth Defense Force World Brothers 2
Game Center CX Replay 1+2

Edit: Maybe Ryu ga Gotoku 8 too.

I guess 2023 looks great in comparison to 2022, the year where only one game came out.
It's been a weird one, there have been a lot of strong releases this year, but none of them have either tickled my fancy or I've had enough of a desire to play them to buy them NAO outside of Trails to Reverie and AC6. I still haven't bothered to get Yakuza Ishin for example and that one was on my "very interested" list for example and I was also paying attention to Sea of Stars, but have passed on it as well.

I feel the same way. There've been a lot of releases this year that are, personally to me, the kind of games I won't touch until they're like, $10 on sale. Like a Dragon Ishin is on my wish list, but that's definitely a game I'm waiting for a serious price drop for, because I'm a newcomer to Yakuza and still have a ton of games to go through. Same deal with Gaiden.

Toddfield is something I do not care about at all. I wasn't kidding when I posted an uninstallation screenshot in the Starfield thread, I really don't want to even bother with yet another game that broken and woke. Fuck it, just throw it away. Life's too short to play games where you need to put up with a bunch of preachy bullshit. I see trash like Spider-man 2, and I just see a game tailor-made for the kind of retard that can't comfortably take a shit without knowing the political leanings of who made their toilet seat. They can't even talk about the stupid thing without a tinge of hate in their praise, baiting anyone they can to tell them they're wrong so they can grandstand and pretend like they're morally superior because of their choice of video game.

I'm not even letting woke be on my radar. Closest is BG3 but I decided to spend 5 bucks on Kingmaker instead and I consider that itch scratched.

But the year seemed to be stronger but with the dust settling it's just alright. I know I will eventually play the Yakuza and Lies of P, but it won't be this year. I'm just more keen on playing stuff on my backlog right now and nothing is taking me out of that except Elden Ring DLC or the English release of Kuro no Kiseki, everything else can wait (and this includes discounts).

We all know journalists will pick BG3 because that has the maximum amount of gay sex you can reasonably insert into a genre.
Just the fact that Super Mario Bros. Wonder is getting overshadowed by BG III, even with the critical acclaim for Wonder attached to it, is just proof that the “Game of The Year” mantle is purely subjective.

If anything, I’m willing to argue that Atomic Heart was underrated, and I’m looking forward to playing Bomb Rush Cyberpunk for the Nintendo Switch. It’s mainly because I’m a big fan of the Jet Grind/Jet Set Future Radio series.

Baldur's Gate being rewarded with a win would be good for gamers and nonexploitative developers.

Zelda is meant to be pretty amazing too .
Baldurs gate 3 has too much gay sex in it for anyone on this site to be remotely comfortable with it.
I only played like two new games of note, here's what I remember:

The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog. Interesting visual novel/adventure game kinda mystery thing, played like 20 minutes of so.

Raging Bytes. Zombie JRPG in the style of like a cheesy B-movie. It's okay but insanely repetitive & simple. A lot of potential for sequels.

I'm sure Super Mario RPG remake would be my game of the year though, as long as it doesn't have any censorship or anything.
Stay away from Super Mario Rpg Remake. You aren't worthy of playing it

Best game I played this year;

Runners up;
Inscryption, GoW:2018 (pls port ragnarrok to pc), and Elden Ring.

Probably ToTK or BG3...with my coins on BG3 simply because it was a fun fantasy RPG game that didn't unnecessarily punish you and was just a game you could play, enjoy without feeling like you missed something. No Collectethons...no 'DID YOU GET THIS LEGENDARY' mentions/quests. Some vague hints throughout but overall it was a game of discovery that rewarded the player.

What on earth are you talking about? 2021 and 2022 were dogshiit years. Some of the absolute worst vidya years of all time, if you just want to go by titles released and not back-catalog availability.

Feels like i only played shit this year. Or old games. LISA: The Painful was probably the one that impressed me the most. Lots of releases i pirated and dropped after 10 minutes, Jagged Alliance 3 sadly amongst them, one of the two games i was hyped for this year. I predict Yakuza Gaiden will be my GOTY.
I also nominate Age of Wonders 4 for disappointment of the year
RE4 remake for me. Bought at release and never made it further than the castle. Shooting mechanics completely ruined it for me, spent hours trying to fix them in any way but they remained feeling totally off. I loved RE2 remake and original RE4 is my GOTYAY so it was even more disappointing.

Edit: Did Ishin! come out this year or late last year? It's the game i spent the most time on in recent memory but i am firm on the point that it desperately would've needed the Kiwami treatment.
Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader looks like it's going to be really good.
I played a bit of the alpha and it was pretty fucking good. Didn't go in far because i didn't want to spoil myself the full release but what i saw already makes me cautiously hyped. Deep mechanics, very lore conform, alright dialogue.
