Dead Island 2. That game is all about having fun in a semi-open world. No globohomo shit, just kill zombies with random shit and meet typical Hollywood individuals. DI2 was so much better than Dying Light 2 that Techland has been bringing features from that game into Dying Light.

Whilst I think something like Baldur's Gate 3 probably deserves it for scale and overall quality, I really enjoyed Robocop Rogue City, and have high hopes for the Rogue Trader CRPG by Owlcat. I can't imagine on what merits Starfield would deserve GOTY.

Do we see a theme here? All these badass games (but one) were released in the Trump years. Well, that's part of why they were cheap and so wound up in my selection, but still. Gaming was totally fagged up and dead yet.
There's other stuff I liked, but those are six of the games I played that made my head fill with butterflies. I may have missed some but every one on this list is very UNIQUE and also executed very well in at least one major area.

How is FFXVI woke? The only thing that could really be considered woke is maybe the gay kiss, but even then Dion being gay wasn’t really focused on. Unlike most western games which make a character being gay their entire personality. At that point, you could call Nier woke because your party has both Kaine who is a hermaphrodite, and Emil who’s gay.

Pretty much my exact sentiment.
Even if AC6 isn't THE GOTY, it's MY GOTY. AC5 was mid (if not a bit ambitious in its multiplayer), Verdict Day was a marginal improvement but it was still just AC5. That being said, I kinda hope AC6 gets an "expansion sequel" like 4 and 5 did. Give it a goofy name based around the numerology like Armored Core: Six Sentinels and use it to actually flesh out the lore they laid out in the base game. Add some news parts and bring back AC4's tuning system and it would print money.
I enjoyed BG3, but I think I owe a lot of that to playing a campaign with friends. Some of the characters are a bit Reddit-tier and stuff like the bear sex are definitely... different, but the game's actual mechanics and ability to play your own way are something I'd definitely like to see in other RPGs going forward. Even if BG3 doesn't get GOTY, it'll hopefully light a fire under some of these other company's asses who have grown too comfy resting on their laurels (CDPR, Bethesda, etc).
As for TotK, I got bored of it pretty quick. I didn't care for Breath of the Wild much either. I guess I'm a boomer for liking Zelda games with a bit of structure to them. I played the shit out of Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Minnish Cap over the years, other titles not so much. Recently finished Windwaker, which I thought was enjoyable. Definitely not a 10/10, but it was a cozy game.
