GPUs & CPUs & Enthusiast hardware: Questions, Discussion and fanboy slap-fights - Nvidia & AMD & Intel - Separe but Equal. Intel rides in the back of the bus.

is it a modern one where it's just a low end smartphone in a flip phone case, or one of the old ones which are practically useless as phones due to 3G being phased out?
pretty sure both can work as trackers for the feds anyway (unless you pull out the battery)
I use a CAT S22 as mine, which is basically just a modern smartphone in a flip phone given it runs Android 11. Unfortunately, CAT is a pain to deal with when it comes to proprietary firmware and preloaded bloatware/trackers, rooting and removing them was a massive pain in the ass.

Unrelated to yet another "just switch to Linux" argument, the Minisforum Neptune HX99G had a recent price cut. $823 for a micro build that is basically a high-end (if last-gen) laptop in a micro desktop case.

8-core Ryzen 9 6900HX
8 GB Radeon 6600M
32 GB DDR5

AMD's mobile GPUs kind of suck though. IMO good upscaling is even more important with a mobile GPU.

While this is true today, AMD have announced some very appealing improvements in the upcoming version of FSR. Which supposedly can be applied to any game, even unsupported ones, through AMD's driver tool (unfortunately making it, as far as I can tell, a Windows-exclusive feature). It might not be able to compete with DLSS3, which is so very good, but so far it's looking like it'll basically be DLSS2.5, and frankly DLSS2 is already plenty good enough under anything but very close scrutiny.

Link? Because the issue I have with it is it is highly prone to sparkle, ghosting, and randomly dropped frames. This seems to me to be a fundamental limitation to its heuristic-based approach to upscaling. I'd post video of what I mean, but I'm paranoid.

What kind of phone do you have?
This. I'm worried less on my computer OS spying on me than my phone. At least with my PC, it just sits at home.

Agreed, source needed. I've seen DLSS, that shit is snazzy. Considering how far behind AMD has been for years, their knockoff might as well be a decade behind.

I am never clear on this but do the new versions of FSR require the new cards too? I haven't been hitting any performance walls but it drives me crazy knowing there are features that could be making my life easier that are locked behind slightly better hardware.

No, but they might run like shit on old cards. A friend of mine was running with FSR on something ancient like a 9 series Geforce (GTX 960? I don't know old trash) and the game ran a lot better when it was turned off.

Can say that I've only had one bad experience with FSR on my two 900 series cards, CoD MW2 ran significantly worse, as in sub 30 FPS. Turned off FSR and it went back to 60.
Escape from Tarkov was saved entirely by FSR for me, looked fine and got me back up to 60. All my other times using FSR have been fine.

This was Diablo IV. But good to know it's game dependent rather than solely card-dependent.

Does anyone know how to open the clips on a fan like this?
You can see the clips hinge into place around 1:10 in the video. I installed one like this about 15 months ago and now I can't figure out how to open them again. I've tried pulling them outwards but it really feels like they don't want to open the same way they closed. Like there's a direction you're supposed to pull them in to unclip them. It's probably something super obvious but if anyone knows I'd appreciate advice.

Also, what consistency is thermal grease supposed to have? I tried putting some of the grease from 15 months ago on my finger to see if it had gone bad and it had a somewhat tough, rubbery feel like Blu Tack or whatever your local office-grade adhesive putty is called. Looking at videos of people applying grease I always guessed it had a toothpaste-like consistency.

Pull them towards the other side, just a bit. They hook under the edge of the heatsink fins so you pull towards the side opposite the fan along the heatsink and THEN they'll hinge out.

And it sounds like it might be bad thermal grease, it's cheap enough that it's really better to replace it if there's any question. On the other hand I've used stuff that was sealed well and years old.

Speaking of air coolers, I think I found a solid Noctua I'll get next paycheck

I've been reading this thread every week or so but is this still for the same build you were talking about months ago? Unsure of the use case but that cooler for $55~ seems high-ish. If memory serves correctly something like the "Deepcool AK400" or "Thermalright Assassin Spirit" should do just as well within a degree or two for less money.

That Deepcool is a really good cooler. I'm running one in my server for the past year.
