Would it be worth it to get a 3060ti if all i'm going for is 1080p?

Was thinking about going for the 30 cards for 4k gaming this generation, but since it seems the prices are just increasing right now I will wait and see, so my 970 setup still gets to be my gaming rig for a while longer.

I am also waiting for the 2.1 hdmi monitors to release, so I don't have that much of a rush.

Hopefully much of this has calmed down till Christmas, :optimistic:

Hardware Unboxed(who got shadowbanned on youtube for unknown reasons)

Seems that it's their videos about Nvidia that are the ones that don't show up on a search. This dovetails with the incident where Nvidia stopped sending them founders' edition cards because they were insufficiently fawning towards them.

GN is very informative but does tend to drone on a lot and has an annoying voice.

I really like Burke's voice. All of the new Hardware Unboxed stopped showing up in subscription feeds and search, not just the Nvidia vids. They had a point with skipping raytracing benchmarks, it's not really relevant right now and rasterization is still king. I like to ooh and aah over RT benchmark figures but it's an almost utterly pointless prestige number for Nvidia.

Watching how quickly LTT has gone to just lazy shilling and generic tech stuff is disappointing and I mentioned warning signs in the multimedia "youtubers you hate" thread. But in the past few weeks it feels like this new iteration of LTT has taken hold and the comparison to being this Top Gear-type channel feels correct, with the glaring problem being LTT isn't on the same level of chemistry as the old TG guys. So much of the channel feels like an ego stroke now with Linus and this Madison girl popping up all the time now to be a social media feeder feels like she's contributing to this Zappos style of cult workplace.

Fuck if I could have gone without knowing Anthony was a furry, he was the shining light in the LTT staff. I guess all that's left is Alex since he is actually an engineer who has done stuff and doesn't seem to be a complete soyboy who can't swing a hammer.

Do we have any hard evidence that he's a furry, or is it just speculation and between the linesing.

Thing is, LTT's mystery shopper was genuinely good stuff and they should do that again. Because that would actually be informative for normies who might want to get themselves a prebuilt.

Also, yet more LTT hypocrisy. He did that video criticising Nvidia for their mining-only cards because they were throwaway landfill fodder, yet he's more than happy to excitedly shriek about thin and light phones and laptops which are designed to be unrepairable - aka, landfill fodder.

Nothing 100% concrete, but:
a joke was made about furries fairly recently on one of the streams and Anthony was directly referenced
He apparently has hundreds of plushes, mostly foxes
There was a thread on the LTT forum time ago which touched on it that got nuked over something else.

speaking of rtx, i decided to see what games i have or had on my pc at one point could do ray tracing since following an directx update allowed the 1060 6gb cards and higher turn raytracing on
only 4 games could do it: shadow of the tomb raider, control, ghostrunner, and watch dogs legion. cyberpunk wont let me turn it on, idk if crysis remastered would let me either, and i dont own the other games that got rtx implementation

Ray tracing is a meme. I have a 3080 and lemme tell you, it's a meme. The whole reason the RTX 2000 series was a bust is that outside ray tracing, there just wasn't enough improvement over the 1000 series. That, and the GTX 1080 Ti was equivalent in power to the RTX 2080 and had more VRAM. The RTX 3000 series is a huge, huge leap ahead though. Assuming you can get one.

See, I cranked up CP77 to max with ray tracing on and once you've admired the reflections of the lights and vending machine and suchlike in V's apartment window, the nice shadows and shiny tarmac while eating noodles in the rain, and similar, that's about it. The only other games I have that use ray tracing are Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Amid Evil (an EXCELLENT boomer shooter btw), and in the former it isn't all that big a difference, but in the latter it does really pop in the low-poly art style.

What isn't a meme, though, is DLSS. With that off, CP77 maxed at 4K, RT on, drops to about 25fps on a 3080, but with it on it shoots up to 55-60fps. The current implementation of it on the RTX 3000 series is practically indistinguishable from native rendering. Unfortunately only games with ray tracing seem to support it. If they can roll that out so it can be done with rasterisation, that would be a serious advance, though they probably won't because they want to try to get people into ray tracing.

Everytime someone mentions Linus, it takes me back 10 years ago when I first got into the PC hobby. Firing Squad, 3DGameMan, and Prolimatech were all relevant back then.

GN is solid though. They're my current choice for reviews and news.
Don't forget about Trubritar and Maxishine from back then.
Tiny Tom Logan, also.

Agreed on GN. Steve is just class on top of glass.

Epic recently rolled out native support for DLSS in UE and Unity will probably do that as well. Developers that make their own engine from scratch know enough to implement it on their own, they have skilled people, making an engine is hard.

Unrelated but tangentially touching on raytracing in games, developers that sprung from the demoscene often had wild ideas about realtime implementations because they were graphics wizards and getting paid meant that they could spend all their time, not just free time, to make those ideas happen. Decay is crazy game that was never released.

Everything is very low poly but the lighting really sells it. It's all baked, the lights aren't dynamic so like all vidya graphics it's a clever trick.

Absolutely insane for 1998. They couldn't make it work but I absolutely believe they had something running, the people from the demoscene were extremely talented but they had no experience in planning or programming the game part of a video game.

This is Into the Shadows, a cancelled game from Triton(~Starbreeze).
The reason that there's so good footage of it is that they released this demo for download in 1995, before Duke3D, before Quake. Polygons and realtime shadows, just look at the shadow of that skeleton! Their later (and also cancelled) title Sorcery was also full of wild ideas that no one had ever done before(Sweeney took a stab at it and it was impressive). When they reigned things in they managed to release Enclave.
