GPUs & CPUs & Enthusiast hardware: Questions, Discussion and fanboy slap-fights - Nvidia & AMD & Intel - Separe but Equal. Intel rides in the back of the bus.

I only recently snagged a 5700X for about $183 since it seemed like an easy enough upgrade for my AM4 system. It's basically a 5800X with a slightly lower base clock and a much lower TDP and price. The moment you turn PBO on it just becomes a 5800X in all but power consumption though.
For what it's worth, I did my own less-than-scientific testing using the most readily available thing I had, the Final Fantasy XIV benchmark and ran it both before I installed my CPU with my 3600 and afterward with the new processor, and the score difference was an increase of about 20%-ish. Granted, this is a 6 core vs 8 cores but I don't think FF14 is a highly threaded game so I think IPC is what's really in the spotlight. Either way I'm satisfied enough with the performance for now and it's easy to cool. I didn't think the 5800X3D was gonna be a big enough boost to justify the extra $150 or so especially when I'm already planning on jumping to the next platform in a couple years when the deals are good enough.

Was worried, but the 5600 and the 6600XT handles 1440p quite well!

Think I'll be set for now and wait until the next generation comes out, so I can see whether or not I'll upgrade.

I'm hitting >~100fps @1440p with everything maxed with my 5800x3d+6750XT in the RE4 remake. It's been a long time since I was able to instinctively crank settings and not experience any remorse. It almost runs better than REmake2 oddly enough, and I was using FSR there for shits and giggles. Hoping this lasts me for a long time, my only worry is that VRAM requirements seem to be climbing constantly.

12gb should hold out at 1440p for what you'd expect a 6700xt to drive.

It's the 3070 bros that should be worried. I knew that card was going to start sinking, but not this soon. Pour one out for the guys who bought $600+ "deals".
3070 Ti also has 8 GB lulz. Then there's signs of trouble with the 3080 10 GB.

Rumor has it that the 4050 will have 6 GB. That can be acceptable if it's priced like a 6500 XT and not a fake MSRP.

192GB DDR5 memory kits are a thing now, so I'm considering ordering one. 5200MT/s advertised, which is lower than my current 128GB set which runs at 6000MT/s, but considering my atrocious timings and the CPU fclk halving itself to keep the memory controller going, even if I can't push it higher than 5200 chances are I'll still see better net performance out of it. My ASUS motherboard finally got a BIOS update that enables memory context, so at least I'm no longer spending half an hour every boot with the fans at full blast while it re-trains the memory.

Also, turns out German customs seized the ewaste GPUs I ordered for my server. Wouldn't want Russians to get their hands on those juicy 2011 vintage Quadros!

bro just buy 32gb you'll be fine
I do CFDs, 128GB is kind of the minimum here. I regularly go above 90GB during compute. Getting more bandwidth out of the DIMMs would be a huge performance boost, so arguably I should be using those 9000MT/s 16GB kits, but if I can’t fit the whole dataset into working memory performance plummets. I use three M.2 in a pool so my disk loads are quick, but they’re not RAM quick.

I am considering adding two more drives, too… Would kick my GPU down to eight lanes, but that’s fine.

did you had to disable rt or you didnt have the critic fail in that game?

So I've been thinking of treating myself this year and upgrading from my 2070 super to something were I can basically turn everything to almost max at 1440p and forget about it. Now I'm not some enthusiast or an expert in pc hardware but I was sorta eeying the 4060 ti because at the time of the rumors it seemed like the least bad option, DLSS 3, I'm guessing better ray tracing, more cuda cores than my 2070 super and, again, at the time, from what I read, it was going to be 400-450 dollars (500-550 euro here in Europe).

But lately the more leaks come out the least excited I'm about the 4060 ti so I decided to take a look at AMD and for how much performance you get either the 6950xt or 6800xt are really appealing, the three things that give me pause and make me hesitate getting one of them are:
- Lazy developers are now and they just throw RT as a quick fix for lighting and shadows and I know these AMD cards don't have the best RT performance,
- Productivity. Now granted I don't work with 3d modeling, I use Animate and After effects for 90% of my work so I don't really know how much would I be affected.
- FSR vs DLSS. Maybe its because I have an Nvidia card but FSR 1 and 2 looks atrocious in the games I've tested them with.

Are there any Kiwibros with experience with AMD cards that could perhaps give me some pointers?

Why not wait for a while? It doesn't seem you're in a hurry and none of the three have launched the full stack of products from engineering. Plus Yurope prices are not analogous to US prices, sometimes AMD is just as expensive. Now, you may be interested in N32, the 7700 XT that hasn't been released yet.
  • AMD is about a generation behind in RT compared to Nvidia. So their 7000-series is about on par with 3000-series,
  • I don't think you'd stand to benefit much from GPUs in the scenarios you gave,
  • FSR will see wider adoption as it's going to be used on consoles, but Nvidia pays studios a lot of money to make sure their tech is used on PCs.

I won't lie. I'm biased. I kind of hate what Nvidia has become. I'd say don't buy an Nvidia card just out of principal, but that's just me. They've been getting scummier with the deception every generation since Pascal.
I've had a 970 since release, it's been a fantastic card for the last decade. Love it to bits. I'd even say it's a fairly legendary GPU IMO

With that in mind, I can't justify spending $800-1000 on something that can be achieved at near half the price, and won't run out of Vram if I want to play something released recently.
Such is why I plan on going to a 6800XT, unless the 7000s are priced well (I doubt it)

970 was fine. That was back in the relatively "good old days". Now it's what that? You want a gpu for less than $500? Get out of here, filthy fucking pleb. Don't you understand muh INFLATION (of margins)?
