GPUs & CPUs & Enthusiast hardware: Questions, Discussion and fanboy slap-fights - Nvidia & AMD & Intel - Separe but Equal. Intel rides in the back of the bus.

KS has always been for the tiny group that needs to win the silicon lottery with their CPU and is willing to waste lots of money. I'm perfectly fine with it.
Or as I like to call it - The Geekbench Gacha

The single threaded performance lives in another chart from the one I was pasting

It seems like you never even heard of passmark before, and are now trying to argue memory bus is most important, except I was originally replying to 'what benchmarks matter' for a 14900KS, which would definitely be passmark.

Even if you control for the arbitrary server/desktop distinction, and in your case fail to notice the fact that HEDT/workstation chips that are not meant for severs are chart toppers anyways, AMD is still doing really well on raw processing power just on the Ryzen series by coming in at a much better price per performance and you just seem kindof dumb.
Some benchmarking software that isn't even notable enough to have its own wikipedia page is suddenly the most important and relevant benchmark for desktop CPUs? Color me skeptical.

Sounds like Nvidia doubled the die size of Big Blackwell to get 2.5x the performance:
B200 ends up with theoretically 1.25X more compute per chip with most number formats that are supported by both H100 and B200. Removing two of the HBM3 interfaces and making a slightly larger chip might mean the compute density isn’t even significantly higher at the chip level — though of course the NV-HBI interface between the two chips also takes up some die area.

I am having trouble with my machine, after leaving it off for a couple hours the first time it attempts to boot it does not post, turns off and on again then works.
The machine turns off when the dram led lights up, so I tried reseating ram and using other ram sticks altogether but it only made it worse, now occasionally it bootloops and I have to reseat ram multiple times to get it to boot.
Once turned on the computer works flawlessly, no bsods or anything.
Memtest86 shows no issues after 4 passes, I updated bios and changed cmos battery too.
So I think mobo is on the death bed, not sure how to confirm this besides wait until it refuses to turn on regardless of what I do.
As for a replacement, is there a difference between b450 and b550 chipsets? I would like to upgrade cpu in the future but I see both of them already support latest gen ryzen.

As an additional note, I lose display altogether if I plug any usb device that has power in it, say if I plug a printer and it is plugged into power, I lose display, but not if it is not plugged in.
If you figure out what causes it please post an update, it could help people in the future.
Turns out this old issue of mine was caused by a faulty PSU. Oddly the computer ran fine all this time under load. It hasn't done that for a couple of weeks since I replaced it.

So I'm swapping my PC to a new case, but don't feel like moving my water loop. I grabbed an air cooler off Amazon, went with the Thermalright frost spirit 140 currently for a criminally low $28.

Dual tower 140mm that beats the D15. For $28. Insanity.

So me and my buddy put together his new PC last night. 12 gen i7 12700k, micro atx As Rock board, 850 watt thermaltake power supply, 32 gigs ddr4, 4070 super, 1tb hdd from the old machine, 500 gig wd red ssd for the boot, and 1 tb Samsung 980 m.2 for some modern gaming. We put it together using his old case. Won't boot no matter what we do. Took it to a good shop I know. The worst part it took 4-5 hours to get to this conclusion that we were fucked with zero clue why it isn't booting. My reaction at the end:

Looking at a 8tb drive for my build tbh, a wd red plus.
it'll go along with my current two 4tb drives and one 6tb drive, plus one 2tb sata drive that's being used as emergency storage and needs to be pulled out

I'm so grateful that I'm working as now I can slowly knock down my buying to-do list. next month is my birthday so it would be nice if I could get myself something

Well good on you man for getting a job and working towards some goals. Damn you have a lot of storage already. A lot used, sheesh lol. I can't even imagine filling up the 8tb drive I'm getting.

honestly it just happens over time. Shows I want to watch, shows I liked watching, shows that were extremely popular for their time so I should probably get around to watching, etc. I already paid several times more for storage then I did for the server, which is a ThinkServer TS430
And that's even after buying a TS440 so I could cannibalize it's second drive cage so i have a total of 8 hot swap drive bays instead of 4
I might get a Quadro p600 for video transcoding as something at that price point will be sufficient.

I guess I get that. Just collecting shit over time. I guess if I digitized my entire VHS collection, it might make a decent dent. I can see what happened.

Luckily with my build, I have plenty of SATA ports, and the case can hold quite a few drives. If I got multiple 8tb WD red drives over time, I could keep my deep storage loaded on the same machine. You gave me some fun ideas lol :D .

I'm using used sas drives that are a bit faster

Ah interesting.
Great thing about mass storage is if you're okay with manufacturer recertified you can get exos/ ultrastars for cheap. Just grabbed 2x12tb for about $200.
I'm personally afraid of drive failure from personal experience. I'd rather buy new, even if a used enterprise drive is bulletproof. Still though, if it's in a RAID, NAS, whatever you call it, it should buy time if something fails.

I mean you can even get them with 5 year warranties for that price. Just grab a couple extra and RAID it....which you should be doing anyways if you're really into the mass storage game. Along with other backups for sensitive stuff.

I mean it just depends. Always could have a mix of new and old for extra security, with backups like you said. It all depends really how much storage I actually want. I'm in between wanting 20 tb and just a 8tb wd red plus to give me some bulk storage, and it's brand new out of the factory. I'll think on it.

"100 MB? I can't imagine ever filling up a 100 MB drive!" -Me, 1995

"Sweet! I was able to delete Solitaire, Minesweeper, and a bunch of fonts I'll never use! That extra 500kb should make my P3 better handle Call of Duty! Now I need to try anything to OC it!"

I both miss and loathe those days.

Lmao. Look I get storage kinda gets smaller as time marches on. I've never even filled a 1tb drive lol. 8tb still looks huge for a guy like me who isn't doing super crazy shit with it.
