Forgive me if this was mentioned in a post I might have missed, but do we know about the estimated size of the 5000's? All that I can find are the technical specs. Surely it cannot be any bigger than a 4000's?
If I dip into the new AMD I need a new motherboard and a new AIO cooler, and I think that already just guarantees a new PC case (as I have mentioned in a couple of posts here already that I'd need to buy a new whole PC if I'm doing anything....). The Fractal North XL looks excellent, and from GN's review they gave it a pretty good and it still appears around the top in their new charts, and I'd be willing to be paying the price.
Surely that should be fine and very future-proofed? Any personal recommendations regarding cases or anything to look forward? I just see "looks good, has good cable management and has good temperatures and noise" and dunno what else there can be to it for me to discern for another choice, maybe the Antec Flux Pro, because I'm a sucker for anything that uses wood and that is very performant as well.

What I'm thinking of is just for now shoving in all my current parts, then whenever the 5000's release, get that or a 4070 TI thanks to the price drops (lol as if), then be able to update the build every two years or so.
I want that peace of mind of thinking that I do not have to rip my wallet wide open for a couple of years, seriously cards cannot get any more retarded than what Nvidia wants to do especially with the 5090, we are just reaching a physical limit, but I want a margin of error without going crazy and investing into a custom loop, just in case.

I think you'll have to wait and see, but I believe the 4000 series was overengineered for the 600W TDP. They probably won't grow any larger.

Are you about to make some sick AI art with a 5090 32GB?
 
Interesting turn of events with the 3050 laptop: I tried to boot it up and it gave me the usual “screen and LEDs light up, go dark, and light up again” song-and-dance number and I proceed to restart it like always.

And the fucking thing starts up on the second restart. No additional restarts needed.

So now I’m puzzled about where to go next. Do I restart it and get into BIOS to see if I can find the problem? Do I take it over to a certified repair center? Do I not bother with it at all and just recycle it? Do I sell it and risk someone hunting me down when it goes back to its usual funkiness?

It’s honestly confusing me.

Could be a cold solder joint somewhere. Next time it doesn't want to boot warm the board up with a hair dryer and see if it comes to life.

That’s the funny thing, it hasn’t been booted up since last year (around the same time I got my new laptop) and the room it’s stored in is cool and dry.

The 5090 is fucking ridiculous in both the projected price and the leaked wattage, I'd like to run big shit locally but the 90s always have been a hard pass for me, no amount of "muh AI" will sell me on it and I absolutely refuse to support Nvidia doing such practices.

There's still defect present. Does it hang once it has booted?
It may load safe defaults on second boot. Try numlock on coold boot, if it blinks at least some power circutry works ok.
I would leave just one stick of ram and no drive inside to boot. You may have to clean cpu fan and hs too and a good repaste

i think every single computer i have ever owned has randomly failed to boot, booted into recovery, and then continued working without issue at some point. i think if you can't replicate the issue then it was just windows update doing hardware updates, i believe windows update can update the bios on modern computers

They'll likely match the size of the 4080 and 4090. From leaks, we know nvidia originally planned to pump quite a bit more juice into those cards which is why the coolers are so overbuilt (especially on the 4080). The 5090 will likely have a TDP around what was originally planned for the 4090 so the cooler will probably be the same size.

That's actually a thing that happens some times. A laptop can appear dead to the world but if you leave it be for a while it might sober up and work again.
 
Ryzen 7 9800X3D sells out within minutes of going live on Amazon, Best Buy, and Newegg

And this is why I pulled that 7800x3d trigger, cause people will fall back when they can't get a 9800.

Scalpers are already jacking up the price of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D

If it want plugged in then it probably got drained enough that the pram lost power. When that happens most laptops are confused a little until they recharge enough to keep the clock running.

Well the laptop's pulling its shit again, I'm taking it to Micro Center to see if some of the techs there can figure out what's wrong with it.

Oh, and the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU is on sale at Amazon. Word of warning: it seems to be shifting delivery dates. It showed a late December delivery date for me but now it's moved to mid-January.

My local Micro Center still has the 7800X3D in stock and it smartly limiting it to one-per-household, I could even get it in a nice CPU/mobo/RAM combo.

It's sold out pretty much everywhere. #1 new release in CPUs and sold out on Amazon, sold out on NewEgg. I think Amazon has even killed 3rd party listings since scalpers are doing 2x markups on it.
 
The 9800x3D looks so tempting. I'd like my next build to last 3-4 years and have enough RAM and CPU horsepower to virtualize a bit. Also considering running Linux this time around. Any reason not to go for it?

I see the 9900X for $383 on Amazon. If you don't need the ultimate gaming processor but need productivity, something like that could be better.
